The following timeline presents the events occuring during the quest for the Ignika, leading up to Teridax's takeover of the Matoran Universe.

Eleven Months After the Coming of the Toa

Voya Nui

Voya Nui in Fractures
  • Months after the arrival of Takanuva, the Matoran depart Mata Nui.[1][2] They return to Metru Nui and the reconstruction of the city begins.[3][4]
  • One month prior to their descent down the 777 stairs, and even as the Matoran are journeying back to the city, the six figures called the Piraka defect from the Dark Hunters and head to Mangaia. While exploring the ruined lair, Vezon is accidentally created, and Teridax plants information of the Ignika in the Piraka's heads. While the six original Piraka are distracted, Vezon locates a canister in Mangaia belonging to an Order of Mata Nui agent Teridax had killed and Vezon rides the canister to Voya Nui.[5] The rest of the Piraka are soon chased out of Mangaia onto Mata Nui by the Mana Ko. The six collect the antidermis of Makuta Teridax in a vat, steal the Toa Mata's Canisters, and travel to Voya Nui.[6]
  • Turaga Whenua gives Hahli a tour of the Archives, explaining the history of the League of Six Kingdoms as he goes.[7]
  • The Toa Nuva face Doom Vipers in Ga-Metru using their Kakama Nuvas.[8]
  • The six Toa Nuva learn from Dume that Mata Nui is dying. The Turaga tell them that the only hope is the Mask of Life, hidden on the floating island of Voya Nui. They are told to travel there without Takanuva, whom Dume insists must stay behind to protect the city.[4]
  • The Piraka arrive on the island of Voya Nui in Toa Canisters, claiming that they are Toa in order to gain the Matoran's trust and manipulate them. However, their main purpose on the island is to search for the Mask of Life.[9][10]
  • Turaga Dume leads the other Turaga and the Toa Nuva to an underground chamber containing Toa Canisters. The Toa Nuva depart for Metru Nui.[11]
  • In Metru Nui, Jaller grows suspicious about the Toa's disappearance, and questions the Turaga. They refuse to tell him where the Toa have gone, or why. Furious, he orders the city's repairing to stop.[12][13]
  • For many days after their arrival, the Piraka make them build the Piraka Stronghold and start digging holes in the side of Mount Valmai to drain the lava. Six Matoran led by Garan grow increasingly suspicious, and he and a group of Matoran start investigating. Several of the Matoran steal a Zamor Launcher that Avak is developing, and Piruk is sent to the Piraka Fortress where he confirms the Piraka aren't Toa.[11][12][13][10]
  • Hakann and Avak "defeat" a monster of their own creation. Garan and Balta follow them and discover they had manufactured the monster themselves.[14][10]
  • Zaktan creates the Zamor spheres and tests them on a Ta-Matoran, Dezalk. The enslaved Dezalk tells all the Matoran to gather at the village. Once they are gathered, the Piraka enslave every Matoran on the island except the Matoran Resistance, who avoid capture and sends them to empty the volcano.[14][15][10]
  • Toa Nuva arrive on Voya Nui in canisters, even as the Matoran Resistance affirms its commitment to overthrowing the Piraka.[15]
  • The Matoran Resistance causes a rock slide and Balta steals a Zamor Sphere from Vezok. Balta hands the sphere off to the rest of the Resistance before heading in a different direction to divert the Piraka who pursue him. Balta makes it inside a cave where he expects to ambush the Vezok and Thok who pursue him, but they scarcely go inside before sealing the entrance, trapping him.[16][17]
  • Reidak attacks the Toa Nuva and the other Piraka head for the scene of battle. Gali fights Hakann, trapping him in a sphere of water, but is caught by his mental blast, which knocks her unconscious. Avak and Kopaka fight, but Kopaka is caged by the Piraka and defeated. At length, Lewa, Onua and Pohatu are finally able to defeat Reidak. Tahu is defeated in a sword fight by Zaktan. Lewa, Pohatu and Onua manage to get their unconscious friends. Thok attacks, but fails. However Hakann downs Pohatu and Lewa and Onua is knocked unconscious by Vezok. Stripped of their masks and tools, the Toa are ordered to be thrown into Mount Valmai.[16][17][18][19]
  • Days after Jaller first announced his ultimatum, Turaga Nokama visits Jaller on Metru Nui and tells him where and why the Toa Nuva have gone, even though she knows Dume and Vakama would be opposed to her doing so. After she leaves, Jaller makes up his mind to gather a few other Matoran and Takanuva and go to aid the Toa Nuva.[20]
  • Hahli, Jaller, Hewkii, Kongu, Nuparu, Matoro and Takanuva leave, proceeding through an underwater chute in Le-Metru. They emerge and find themselves crossing a long, narrow land bridge. They arrive before a tunnel that consumes light and sound, and Takanuva proceeds in.[21]
  • With weeks having passed since the Piraka's arrival on the island, the Matoran Resistance endeavors to find and free Balta.[22]
  • An eruption occurs on Voya Nui causing the Piraka, who were about to execute the Toa Nuva to flee, leaving the Toa behind on Mount Valmai. Pohatu moves the Toa out of danger.[22]
Garan, leader of the Matoran Resistance
  • Balta is freed by Axonn.[23]
  • Jaller's team proceeds into a mysterious tunnel that consumes all light. During the passage Matoro feels a mysterious hand but as he exits the tunnel and realizes all his friends are there, the hand disappears. The party then emerges and reaches a narrow strip of land flanked by seas. On the road they find a Suletu and reach an ancient gateway. Takanuva cannot seem to pass a gate, the Matoran can (but cannot get back out). After an emotional farewell, they part.[23][24]
  • The rest of the Matoran Resistance attacks the Toa Nuva, thinking they are more impostors. Gali is hit by Dalu's Chargers, and madness takes over. She runs away and meets up with Axonn, who helps her calm down and brings her back. Right as the Toa are getting the upper hand, Balta arrives and convinces the Matoran to stop fighting. The Toa and Matoran ally, and head to the Piraka Stronghold to get their masks and tools back.[25][26]
  • Zaktan sends the Piraka to search for the escaped Toa Nuva but Hakann ignores the order.[25]
  • The Matoran of Metru Nui meanwhile travel until they come across a valley full of Manas that are acting as guards. Karzahni reveals himself to the Matoran and orders the Matoran to change their masks. Jaller refuses and is shown a terrible vision of what would have happened if he had not sacrificed himself to save Takua. This is enough to break Jaller.[27]
  • On Voya Nui, Zaktan hires Brutaka who then sets off to find the Mask of Life. Hakann allies with Brutaka in exchange for control over the Antidermis, the virus used to enslave the Matoran.[26]
  • Thok and Avak think that the Mask of Life is in the Green Belt, and that Zaktan is keeping the information from them. Thok convinces Avak to attack Zaktan.[26]
  • Kongu attempts to escape, but is stopped at a vision from the Olisi. At Karzahni's order, Jaller's team puts on the Karzahni's masks but Kongu wears the Suletu instead. Hahli tells Karzahni about the "outside world" as Karzahni has not had any contacts with the world outside his realm, while the others are sent to work in the forges. The other members of Jaller's company learn that Karzahni was meant to repair the Matoran, but he did not know how to do the job and sent the "fixed" to the Southern Continent.[28]
  • Thok arrives in the Piraka Stronghold where Avak has attacked and imprisoned Zaktan. Hakann arrives and attacks all three. The Toa Nuva try getting in by having Reidak destroy the door, but decide to go another way. Zaktan is accidentally freed by Reidak when he hurls Hakann at Avak, causing Avak to lose consciousness. At that moment, the Toa Nuva and the Resistance, masks and tools restored, break in and almost defeat the Piraka. Zaktan offers Brutaka the virus (Now referred to as Antidermis) and in return, Brutaka knocks out all twelve heroes in one swipe of his blade.[29]
The island of Voya Nui as seen from above
  • Back in Karzahni, Jaller's Matoran meet a forgotten Matoran, who was one of the Matoran Crafters who made the Toa Canisters the Toa Mata arrived on Mata Nui in. The Matoran leads them to the hiding spots of six canisters, and Jaller and the others resolve to make their escape in them. Karzahni comes in with Hahli in his grip, and Matoro challenges him to make the worst vision possible using his Olisi. Karzahni obliges, and a vision is created in full detail of what would happen if Mata Nui died. As Karzahni is shocked by his own vision, the Matoran escape in the Toa Canisters.[30]
  • Karzahni realizes that if Mata Nui and Teridax are both on the verge of death, there may be opportunity for him to fill the power void. He manages to follow the Matoran to Voya Nui.[30]
  • On Voya Nui, Dalu manages to get away as Zaktan is gloating at his victory over the Toa.[10][31]
  • While Jaller and the other Matoran are traveling to Voya Nui, a bolt of lightning comes from the Red Star itself. While midway through its travel, the bolt separates into six separate bolts. They reach Voya Nui, and emerge transformed as Toa Inika, who have additional lightning powers, which are fused with their original elemental powers.[30][32]
  • Having witnessed the defeat of the Toa Nuva, Axonn reflects on his past with Brutaka.[33]
  • Even as Garan is being interrogated, Brutaka takes the remaining four unconscious Matoran just outside the Piraka Stronghold. They are nearly attacked by a Doom Viper, but Brutaka teleports it away. Balta wakes up as Brutaka stalks off and begins to wake the other Matoran up.[33]
  • Hakann and Zaktan locate Dalu and bring her back, but begin to fight each other. After Zaktan brings a stone slab down on Hakann, knocking him unconscious, Zaktan muses about the Mask of Life, and walks closer to the canister of Antidermis. While he is distracted, Dalu gets away again.[10]
  • Meanwhile, Thok and Reidak are near Mount Valmai when Thok pushes Reidak over a cliff and runs off. Reidak comes back up and attacks Thok with his Buzz Saw, knocking him down.[10]
  • Avak is approaching Vezok with the prospect of betraying the others when Axonn attacks them, dropping trees and hurling them at the Piraka. The two Piraka pursue him to a cave containing records kept by the Voya Nui Matoran. While Vezok is distracted destroying the records, Axonn and Balta seal them inside, noting that it won't trap them for long.[10]
The Toa Inika
  • Vezok and Avak escape the cave. While Avak heads in the direction of Reidak and Thok, the enraged Vezok heads directly to the stronghold to interrogate their Matoran prisoner.
  • Garan is interrogated by Vezok and is tilted in lava.[33]
  • The new Toa wander on Voya Nui. They discover their faces light up without their Kanohi and their masks are organic and alive.[34][35]
  • Hakann awakens after his defeat by Zaktan right as Avak, Reidak and Thok enter the chamber, discussing how Reidak had hurled Thok off the cliff. The four plan how to get rid of Brutaka.[34]
  • Balta and the others save Garan from the Chamber of Truth, and escape from Vezok.[36]
  • After Nuparu discovers his power of flight, Matoro unwittingly unleashes his spirit, seeing the Resistance. Nuparu goes scouting where he sees and is seen by Vezok, who has left the fortress in pursuit of the Matoran. He returns to the others and helps fly them over a lava flow, but accidentally drops Hahli. Jaller uses his Calix to save her. Shortly afterward, the Toa encounter Vezok and defeat him, but he uses his copied powers of ice and fire to escape. Garan reveals himself to the new Toa and takes them to the Matoran Resistance's hideaway where everyone, including Dalu, is reunited.[36][37][35]
  • In the Green Belt, the Piraka reunite and fight among themselves until Zaktan orders them to stop. Thok and Reidak complain since they do not know where to find the Mask of Life. Zaktan states that Vezon, who betrayed them and came to Voya Nui before the others did, thought of knowing where the Ignika is. He orders Thok and Reidak to track down Vezon.[32]
  • Thok and Reidak find the canister he traveled in and decide to follow his footsteps. Just at that moment Axonn interrupts and cracks the whole land open, causing Thok and Reidak to fall in. Axonn retrieves them both, throwing them aside and telling them to give up their search. The three fight for a while, until Thok and Reidak propose to Axonn that if he "point them toward Vezon" then they would be on their way. Axonn tells them that Vezon now serves the Mask of Life. Just as he is about to hit them with his axe, Brutaka comes out of nowhere and knocks Axonn to the ground with a beam of energy from his sword.[32][38]
Umbra
  • The Matoran explain the desperate situation to the Toa. Jaller names his team Toa Inika, and they get new Zamor Launchers from Velika. They then split up.[39]
  • Leaving Axonn for dead, Brutaka, Thok, and Reidak reunite with the other Piraka and make their way back to the stronghold. Axonn stirs and limps back to his home in the mountains.
  • Jaller, Hahli, Dalu, and Piruk go to free the enslaved Matoran with their Zamor spheres.[39]
  • Hewkii, Matoro, Kazi and Balta travel into the mountains where they find Axonn, battered and exhaused due to his fight with Brutaka. He tells the Toa to do whatever it takes to stop Brutaka, who is on his way to the Piraka Stronghold.[39]
  • Nuparu, Kongu, Garan and Velika defeat the Nektann guarding the Piraka stronghold and search the fortress for the Toa Nuva.[39]
  • Upon arriving in the main chamber of the stronghold, Nuparu, Kongu, Garan, and Velika are ambushed by the Piraka and Brutaka but the other Toa Inika arrive in time and attack the Piraka Stronghold. A vicious fight breaks out, with the advantage see-sawing between the two sides. During the fight, Hakann shoots a Zamor Sphere at Brutaka, and the specially created Zamor Sphere transfers the being's power into Hakann. Before the Zamor Sphere hits Brutaka, Thok races to Hakann and makes physical contact, and when Brutaka gets hit, and Thok and Hakann get his energy. The two Piraka defeat the five Toa and three Piraka in one go.[39][40][35]
  • Thok and Hakann interrogate Brutaka as to the location of the Ignika before setting out.[41][42][35]
  • During the fight, the Matoran descend to the lower levels to seek out the Toa Nuva. While they are there, they find maps alluding to the existence of Mahri Nui.[43]
  • Nuparu, who was not at the stronghold when Hakann stole Brutaka's power, returns and revives the other Toa, and the Toa inspect Brutaka. However, Axonn arrives, giving words of wisdom to the Toa and gives Jaller a special Zamor sphere, saying the Toa will have to use it to retrieve the Ignika. The Toa Inika leave to follow the Piraka armed with another special Zamor Sphere given to them by Zaktan, which will return Brutaka his powers when shot at Hakann and Thok.[43][35]
  • Hakann and Thok fight each other while on the way to the Mask of Life. During this fight, Hakann fires a heat ray into the ground which hits a gas pocket, causing an enormous explosion. The Inika see the explosion and track them down. While the Piraka are fighting Hakann, the Toa arrive and take on Thok. During the fight, Hakann hurls Reidak at the Piraka, where he smashes into Avak. In the nick of time, Hewkii takes this chance to fire his Zamor Sphere, causing the two Piraka to lose their power just as their blasts knocked the Toa Inika unconscious.[44][45]
  • Brutaka's power returns to him, and as Axonn watches, he stands to his feet. The two start to fight.[46][45]
  • The Toa awaken and realize the Piraka have entered the cave already. They proceed in.[46][45]

  • Hakann takes the lead and encounters a junction in the passage, but as the left passage is blocked by stone, he takes the right path. However, before he can go much further, he is attacked by Irnakk.[47]
  • As the Piraka descend into the stone staircase that was revealed in the explosion, Zaktan thinks about how far they had come. However, his musings are interrupted when he and the other Piraka see Hakann and his armor melting on the steps, and hear footfalls ascending toward them.[48]
  • Now reunited, the Piraka encounter their worst fear, Irnakk. He defeats five Piraka, but Zaktan is able to confront this fear by saying he is fear and the Piraka are able to get by.[47]
  • The Matoran Resistance continues to seek out the Toa Nuva in the Piraka Stronghold.[49]
  • The Inika begin to travel down the staircase and reach the junction. However, this time, the right side is covered, and the left is open, so they take the left. The Toa enter the a chamber where an illusion of Lhikan tells them to turn back.[49]
  • Meanwhile, in the stronghold, Brutaka battles Axonn, even as he opens a portal to the Zone of Darkness to trap his former friend, that will not close until something comes or goes through it.[49]
  • The Inika encounter a chamber where they battle illusions of all their foes (Makuta, Bohrok, Bohrok-Kal, a Rahkshi, a Nui-Rama, and a Muaka). The defeated illusions then morph into the Toa Nuva causing depression amongst the Inika. The Toa decide to continue, and then realize the Toa Nuva are illusions.[50]
  • The Piraka reach the next chamber where each one is trapped in a tube. A voice tells them that if they all pull the lever in front of them at the same time they will all be released. If only one person pulls it that person will escape and the rest will be incinerated. Reidak pulls his lever.[51]
  • The Resistance frees the Toa Nuva from chains and the Antidermis that Brutaka and the Piraka used to trap them.[52]

  • The Inika then come to the bridge and short battle erupts, which looks to be in the Inika's favor, but a strong whirlwind caused by Kongu collapses the bridge the Inika are on, crushing them beneath the rubble. The Piraka proceed to the final chamber, finding Vezon, who has become the Ignika's ultimate guardian, fused with a giant spider, Fenrakk.[52][45]
  • Vezon is trapped in a cage by Avak, and shows them the mask is fused to the back of his head. He says he will give it to them if they kill Vezok. The Piraka trap Vezok, only to have Vezok copy his attacker's powers and use them to free Vezon in hopes to attack him. Vezon fuses Reidak and Vezok together into a creature under his control. The creature knocks the other Piraka unconscious and then is defused which knocks out Vezok and Reidak.[53][54]
The Piraka Fusion
  • The Inika then blast open the door and enter the final chamber.[55][54]
  • Axonn engages in a battle with Brutaka, who tries using the Antidermis to make himself stronger. Axonn then shatters the giant vat of Antidermis. He thinks he may have heard the virus scream. After that, Axonn defeats Brutaka and Botar appears. Axonn tries to stop Botar from taking Brutaka to the Pit, before Botar threatens to take Axonn there as well.[53][54]
  • Tahtorak and Krahka escape from the Zone of Darkness.[53]

However, Matoro, Kongu and Hahli almost defeat the guardian, but Vezon and Fenrakk recharge with kinetic energy. Jaller knocks Vezon and his mount into the lava. Just before Jaller would have jumped in to try and retrieve the Ignika, Vezon emerges with a transformed mount which is now the Kardas.[55][54]
  • The Inika fight Vezon and Kardas. Jaller and Kongu are temporarily knocked out. The remaining Toa combine their powers, but Kardas defeats them. However, Kongu reads the "mind" of the mask and displays how the mask hates Vezon into Vezon's head. Jaller fires the Axonn's Zamor Sphere at Vezon and Kardas freezing them in time. • The Inika fire blasts at the Piraka to slow them down and then begin chasing the mask. The Piraka break free of Matoro's ice beams and begin pursuit excluding Vezok and Reidak. Vezok demands Reidak fuse him and Vezon back together. Reidak snaps the spear of fusion in half, and then in half again. Vezok and Reidak pursue the other Piraka.[56]
  • A Matoran in Mahri Nui begins swimming toward the surface.[56][57]
  • The Inika emerge aboveground and race to the shore only to see the mask plunge into the ocean and Hahli swims down after the mask until she faints under the pressure. Matoro pursues her in spirit form, but rushes back to the surface when Hahli starts to drown.[56][57]

  • The Piraka see the group, and decide to wait for the perfect moment to strike.[56][57]
  • Axonn says he can show the Inika how to get down to the mask. He then opens a gate into the Cord, and the Toa Inika's journey to Mahri Nui begins.[58]
  • Having trailed them to Voya Nui, Karzahni pursues the Toa Inika on their journey into the Black Water.[59]
  • Vezon reforms the Spear of Fusion with its own power.[60][61]

Gavla is among the first of the many Av-Matoran to be turned into Shadow Matoran by the Makuta in Karda Nui's skies. These Shadow Matoran include Kirop, former leader of the Av-Matoran, who was turned over while leading a rescue on the second day. Tanma, an Av-Matoran, replaces Kirop. The Toa plan, then launch an all-out attack on the Makuta to reach the Codrex. Once they reach it, Tahu puts the keystones into a niche in the center of the Codrex, and the shield goes down long enough for the Toa Nuva to get inside. Although the Toa don't notice, Antroz sneaks in behind them as well. The Toa are brought down to a lower level of the Codrex on a moving platform. She then declares that victory is at hand and that Mata Nui is almost awakened. Icarax, not wanting this, tries to teleport away. Gorast zooms toward Icarax and turns on her Mask of Disruption, making the atoms scatter while Vamprah releases of blast of power, sending them around the Matoran Universe. Gorast explains that when one teleports, their atoms are scattered and will reappear wherever they want. Scattering the atoms meant that pieces of Icarax would reappear in various places around the universe.[226]

With this, the Toa are driven into hiding and the Reign of Shadows begins.[235][225][236]

Trivia

  • Close examination of Island of Doom indicates that some of its scenes are out of chronological order. At the start, the narrative implies that the Piraka arrive on Voya Nui around or before the time Dume alerts the Toa of Mata Nui's impending demise. Jaller travels down to confront the Turaga immediately after the departure of the Toa--despite this narrative being interwoven with events that would logically take place a minimum of a few days afterward. Following this, some time elapses, during which work on Metru Nui grinds to a halt and the Piraka use the Matoran as their free, then enslaved labor force. This timespan is referred to in terms of days on Island of Doom (chapter 3, page 30; chapter 4, page 46; chapter 5, page 53; and chapter 11, page 119), although Dark Destiny describes this total Voya Nui timeframe in terms of weeks (chapter 1, page 11). After this time is up, the Toa arrive on Voya Nui and are defeated, even as Nokama tells Jaller the truth of the situation. In other words, while the narrative may do a timeskip in one location, it may not timeskip in another. Although the timeline could be more logically arranged based on these timespans and timeskips, minimal adjustment has been made so as to hold as closely to the Island of Doom narrative ordering as possible.
    • The entire adventure of the Piraka from Mangaia to the Chamber of Life takes place over the course of a month, as revealed by the heading of Legacy of Evil chapter seven.
  • Although the Ignition comics place the arrival of the Toa Inika at the end of the second Voya Nui comic, this is chronologically misplaced for dramatic effect. In truth, the entirety of the first two comics take place concurrent to the events Power Play, and are often referenced during the events of that story, all of which occurs after the Toa Inika have arrived.
  • There is no direct confirmation as to the amount of time the battle in Mahri Nui takes place; however, based on vague textual clues, it can be estimated to have been about a week.
  • The 2008 novels do not give many textual clues in terms of its timeline. Much timespan information present here has been inferred from the serials, where the events of Federation of Fear occurs over a week, before even then the events of Destiny War, Brothers in Arms, and Dwellers in Darkness take place. Considering the struggle for Karda Nui takes place over the same amount of time as these, day breaks must be inserted wherever logical.
  • In terms of Swamp of Secrets, the events of the first few sections in chapter one must be viewed as occuring over days, as otherwise the events of that book occur over a day, whereas even the narrowest window for Shadows in the Sky is a minimum of a few days. As such, it must be infered that the Toa were delayed in reaching the bottom of the swamp and/or the Toa scattered and reunited several times over those days, and it was not until much later that the Makuta honed in on the Toa. This timeline has been constructed with both assumptions in mind.
