"How does this area stay so lush and fertile? If there were underground streams, I would have thought the little Matoran creeps would have found them by now."

The Green Belt is a forest that covers much of the Voya Nui region of the Southern Continent.

History

The Green Belt as seen in the Voya Nui Online Animations

The Green Belt was chosen by the Great Beings to be the location of a hidden entrance to the 777 Stairs, a pathway to the Chamber of Life, where the Kanohi Ignika could be found. Dagger Spiders were often seen swarming out of crevices in the ground here.

The Matoran of Voya Nui feared it greatly, for it had no visible means of sustaining itself. Some of the Piraka concluded that this was where the Kanohi Ignika was hidden, surmising that its energy had caused the trees and plant life to grow in such a harsh environment. While battling Thok, Hakann fired his Heat Vision into a gas pocket, which created a giant fireball that incinerated much of the Green Belt and uncovered the entrance to the stairs. The other Piraka and the Toa Inika then battled Hakann and Thok, and shortly thereafter, descended into the stairs.

Shortly after Voya Nui's return to the Southern Continent, the Order of Mata Nui agent Axonn noticed two beings appear in the forest, and went to investigate. He found Toa Krakua and Botar's replacement, and, after speaking briefly, they took him to Daxia.

When Teridax was killed in the Battle of Bara Magna, the Green Belt was severely damaged, and the Matoran evacuated to Spherus Magna. Later, the Green Belt, along with all other locations in the Matoran Universe, was dismantled.[1][2]
