The Energy Storms were large storms of raw energy that devastated Karda Nui when the body of the Great Spirit Mata Nui was awake.
History
When Mata Nui was awakened for the first time, the storms began and obliterated all the Matoran settlements that had been built there. The Toa Mata, who were in Karda Nui on orders from Toa Helryx, found refuge from the storms within Toa Canisters inside the Codrex. The Av-Matoran moved back from Karda Nui to their homeland in the caves below the Southern Continent.[1]
During the Matoran Civil War, the Matoran of Metru Nui stopped their work. As their work was vital to Mata Nui's health, the Great Spirit weakened, and the storms within Karda Nui decreased in intensity.[2] Toa Jovan and his team, seeking to save the life of Mata Nui, retrieved the Kanohi Ignika from Voya Nui and entered Karda Nui. After a member of Jovan's team sacrificed his life to heal the Great Spirit, the storms increased in energy and power. The surviving Toa fled the storms using a Kanohi Olmak.[3]
When Mata Nui fell into a deep slumber during the Great Cataclysm, Karda Nui's storms stopped and stalactites fell from its ceiling. With the storms subsided, the Av-Matoran were able to recolonize Karda Nui, establishing villages atop the fallen stalactites.[4]
The Energy Storms began once more after Toa Ignika sacrificed his body to reawaken Mata Nui. The storms quickly spread throughout Karda Nui, incinerating the Makuta that were on mission there, including Mutran, who believed he had figured out a way to control them. The Toa Nuva and Takanuva narrowly escaped the storms using the three vehicles that they had found in the Codrex. The Av-Matoran in Karda Nui safely migrated to Metru Nui.[5]
After the death of Teridax and the destruction of the Matoran Universe, the Energy Storms once again stopped.
