Biography

Early life

Approximately 100,000 years ago, Gorast was brought into being by the Great Spirit Mata Nui[1] using the substance known as Antidermis on an island in one the southern chains of the Matoran Universe.[2] Like all other Makuta, she was created to be a member of the Brotherhood of Makuta, an organization tasked with maintaining order in the universe and serving the will of Mata Nui. Gorast created numerous breeds of Rahi beast to populate the Matoran Universe.[1]

After the defeat of the League of Six Kingdoms, Gorast journeyed with Mutran to the territory of Kalmah. Though they found nothing of use, Gorast spotted a few stragglers, and began hunting them down.[3]

At some point, Gorast was trampled by a Tahtorak stampede.[4]

Following the Matoran Civil War on Metru Nui, the Makuta were assigned to supervise regions of the universe. Gorast's region included the Tren Krom Peninsula of the Northern Continent,[5][6] one of the most dangerous regions of the known universe. She faced the Acid Falls and fought creations of Tren Krom, enforcing her rule by punishing all dissent with death. Gorast became so infamous that Chirox and Mutran came to rely on her region's Matoran for volunteers for experiments, so eager were they to escape. Gorast responded to this by destroying Chirox's laboratory on Destral and threatening to kill him.[7] Gorast was also responsible for conquering the Visorak horde after Chirox created them.[8]

When Teridax demanded a Convocation to reveal the plan and claim leadership, Gorast was one of the first to side with him. After Teridax had assumed leadership of the Brotherhood of Makuta, he ordered Gorast and Icarax to eliminate all of the Makuta who had initially opposed his plan. After killing the Makuta, they placed their Kanohi in the Convocation Chamber as a warning to those who would oppose Teridax.

Gorast, like the other Makuta, evolved beyond the need of a physical body, becoming gaseous Antidermis within armor. Teridax had the Nynrah Ghosts brought to Destral to modify the Makuta's armor to accommodate for the new form.

While visiting Stelt, Gorast was attacked by Krekka, who denied her entrance to the island and knocked her through a wall. Gorast flew into a rage and began a fight, taking Krekka's eye and seeing him banished from Stelt.[9]

Five years ago, Gorast witnessed a fight between Mazeka and Vultraz on the Tren Krom Peninsula, which resulted in Vultraz falling off a cliff. Taking the appearance of a blue-armored warrior with a chain mace and shield, she helped Mazeka up from the cliff face and complimented his actions. She allowed him to return to his village, noting that his spreading the news of Vultraz's death would aid her schemes.[10]

Gorast commanded some Rahi to rescue Vultraz, who was borne elsewhere and restrained with vines. Gorast then rebuilt Vultraz into a stronger form. When he awoke, she tasked Vultraz with finding a De-Matoran, named Krakua.[11] Gorast used Vultraz as a spy for some time before his moral Light was drained by a Shadow Leech, turning him into a Shadow Matoran.[12][13]

When Gorast discovered that Vultraz had discovered the entrance to Karda Nui without informing her, she attacked him. Afterwards, she informed Teridax, who immediately instructed the Brotherhood to invade Karda Nui.[14]

Karda Nui

Antroz assigned Gorast and two other Makuta, Krika and Bitil, to invade Karda Nui's swamp. They took the form of fearsome swamp insects to match the environment. Upon entering the swamp, however, the Makuta were mutated by the waters, and locked in the forms they had at the time. They also lost many of their powers. Gorast regained her need to breathe and developed a stinger on the front of her face that gave her the ability to drain moral Light, which she began using to corrupt much of the wildlife in the swamp.[15]

Gorast in her insect form

While thinking over her role in the Brotherhood of Makuta, Gorast had doubts about the plan and how long it was taking. She soon rejected these thoughts, and decided that the plan was all that mattered. She then attacked Gali Nuva. Gali submerged Gorast within the swamp's waters, and attempted to bind her with her Nynrah Ghost Blaster, but Gorast resisted and overpowered her.[8]

Onua soon appeared and interrupted the fight, lifting Gorast and slamming her down into the mud. Gorast rose, and offered Onua a position in the Brotherhood. Onua refused, and fled with Gali in the direction of Tahu's flare. Gorast pursued Onua and Gali, teaming up with Bitil along the way. While the three Toa Nuva reunited, the Makuta encircled them, until they saw Chirox fall from the sky. The Makuta moved to intercept his plummet, while the Toa Nuva made a hasty retreat.[8]

Gorast pursuing Tahu Nuva

When the Toa Nuva attacked Krika's camp, they misled the Makuta by using new powers, and retrieved another Keystone. The three Makuta confronted them and learned from Bitil that the Ignika had created itself a body, and already defeated Icarax. Shocked and distracted, the Makuta were caught unaware, and the Toa Nuva managed to escape. While Gorast wanted to pursue, Krika instead took them to the Codrex, correctly assuming its importance to the Toa Nuva's plans.[8]

The Toa Nuva attacked the Makuta again, with Gali taking Gorast by surprise by surrounding her head in a water sphere. Krika shot Gali with a shadow blast, only for her to be saved again by Onua and his Nynrah Ghost Blaster. Gorast then attacked Onua, but he landed a solid blow, sending her away. Antroz, Chirox, and Vamprah descended from above, accompanied by their Shadow Matoran companions. After Chirox helped Gorast, they cornered the three Toa Nuva, but the Phantoka Toa Nuva and three Av-Matoran appeared, and the Toa Nuva were also reunited.[8] The two sides then flew into a final confrontation.

During the fight, Gorast slammed Pohatu and Photok into the Codrex's shield. She then used her Felnas to make Pohatu's Elemental Power run wild, burying him and Photok under his own stone power.

When Takanuva arrived to aid the Toa Nuva, the Makuta retreated back to the Codrex. The Toa then attacked the Makuta once again. During that skirmish, Gorast attacked the Toa Ignika, slashing deep into his armor. In response, the Ignika created a creature of rock that backhanded Gorast out of sight.

While the Toa entered the Codrex, Gorast and the other Makuta surrounded it. When Krika destroyed the energy field around the Codrex, Gorast and the other Makuta realized that Krika had betrayed them, but could not prevent it. When Icarax appeared, attempting to kill the Toa Nuva and disrupt the plan, Gorast and Vamprah confronted him. Their attack was futile until Mutran aided them by telepathically filling Icarax's head with white noise. Gorast sent Vamprah a telepathic message, and told Icarax that the plan was succeeding. At this, Icarax began teleporting to the Codrex. Gorast and Vamprah directed Gorast's Felnas and Vamprah's powers at Icarax, disrupting his teleport and scattering his atoms all across the universe.

Later, caught in another fight with the Toa Nuva, the Energy Storms began to start. Krika flew down to the battle and urged the Makuta to stop fighting, claiming that Teridax had betrayed them all. In response, Gorast grabbed him and used her mask to disrupt his intangibility power, causing him to become so intangible his matter and self completely dissipated. She then carried on fighting the Toa, but shortly afterwards, they were picked up by three vehicles and fled Karda Nui. The raging Energy Storms penned Gorast, Bitil, and Antroz into a small area. Gorast eventually realized that Teridax had betrayed her, and their entire kind, shortly before she met her end by the energy of the storm. The shock of this was so great that Gorast made no effort to escape.[7]

Alternate Universes

The Melding Alternate Universe

In an alternate Spherus Magna, Gorast and the other Makuta were created by the Great Beings as white-armored beings of light to aid the Toa in protecting the villagers and to create new life forms.

When Teridax guided Mazeka and Vultraz to the fortress of the Great Beings, Gorast stood guard with Icarax. When Vultraz commented on Gorast's armor color, which was different from his universe, she used her telekinesis to slam him down on the ground as a warning.

Abilities and Traits

Gorast had control over the Element of Shadow and the ability to produce Kraata.

Because of her mutation, Gorast developed a stinger on her face which could suck Light from other beings, similar to Shadow Leeches and the Avsa. If she did not feed on the light of others for a prolonged period of time, she would die. However, when she drained the light out of a being, she did not create a psychic barrier preventing the light from being restored. Thus, the only way she could create a Shadow being was to drain all of the light out of her victim.

Gorast had also lost many of her Kraata powers to mutation. However, she still possessed the Power Scream, Density Control, Chain Lightning, Sonic, Heat Vision, Laser Vision, Magnetism, Teleportation,[citation needed] and Molecular Disruption[16] abilities at the time of the invasion. In addition to these Kraata powers, Gorast still could use telepathy as well. Due to the exposure to mutagen, she also re-gained the ability and need to breathe, both of which she had lost during the Makuta's evolution.

Gorast's Nynrah Ghost Blaster

Gorast was a powerful warrior and was known for her fierce temperament. She had the strongest loyalty to Teridax out of all the Makuta,[17] willing to face death in order to see his plan carried through.

Mask and Tools

Gorast wore the Kanohi Felnas, the Mask of Disruption, which allowed her to disrupt an active natural power of another via touch. In addition to sharp claws and wing blades, she also carried a standard Nynrah Ghost Blaster.

The Gorast set
Gorast combined with the Radiak set
Gorast in the McDonald's Happy Meal promotion

8695 Gorast was released in summer 2008 as a fifty-four-piece Makuta Mistika canister set, wielding two silver claws and featuring four black and lime-green claws on her lower four limbs. One of these limbs holds a Nynrah Ghost Blaster. As is the case with all of the Mistika Makuta sets, Gorast wears a dual-colored mask — in her case, a black and lime rubbery Felnas with a stinger on its mouthpiece. She also has a Matoran connection feature on her back, though no Shadow Matoran set was released for her. Radiak is advertised connecting to her, although this is not reflected in the story.

Gorast was also part of McDonald's BIONICLE "Happy Meal" promotion in late 2008.

In early 2009, instructions were released for a combiner model of Krika, Gorast, and Bitil on BIONICLE.com for the Rahi Swamp Stalker.
