Chirox
"But his Rahi always seemed to come out twisted in mind and spirit. Unlike the creations of others, like the Muaka cat or the Kane-Ra bull, Chirox's contributed nothing to the ecosystem but death and destruction."

Biography
Early life
Over 100,000 years ago, Chirox was brought into being by the Great Spirit Mata Nui[3] from a substance known as Antidermis.[4] Like all other Makuta, he was created to be a member of the Brotherhood of Makuta, an organization devoted to serving the will of Mata Nui. Chirox created numerous breeds of Rahi beasts, such as the Catapult Scorpion and Doom Viper,[5] to populate the Matoran Universe.[3] However, Chirox's creations were always twisted in spirit and contributed nothing of use to the environment.[5] Chirox often worked closely with his best friend Mutran, a fellow Makuta scientist.[6]
Miserix's Brotherhood
On one occasion, shortly after the construction of the Brotherhood fortress on the island of Destral, Chirox and Mutran attempted to salvage an experimental Rahi created by fellow Makuta Spiriah. This effort was interrupted by Miserix, the leader of the Brotherhood, who ordered that one of them accompany Makuta Icarax and his aide Pridak to a trade negotiation meeting on the island of Xia. Mutran was eventually selected to go on the mission, and Chirox remained on Destral.[6]
Sometime over 80,000 years ago, Chirox created a Rahi that he named Lohrak[7]; over the course of the millennia, Mutran came to disdain the Rahi.
Chirox attended a meeting with the League of Six Kingdoms where the Barraki demanded that the Makuta continue to furnish the League with war Rahi. Chirox asked the final question of the meeting, and after Kalmah answered it, Pridak announced that the meeting was over.[8]
Following the Matoran Civil War on Metru Nui, Chirox was assigned to supervise the region of the Matoran Universe that included Keetongu's homeland and Tobduk's homeland.[1] Later, he created the Visorak species on Tobduk's homeland, and after the Rahi were unleashed on the whole island,[9] the Brotherhood renamed the island Visorak in honor of the spider creatures.[10]
When Makuta Teridax demanded a Convocation to reveal his Plan to overthrow Mata Nui, Chirox was one of the first to side with him. After Teridax overthrew Miserix and sentenced him to death, he began to discuss the logistics of the Plan with Chirox and Mutran, ignoring Miserix's threats of vengeance.[11]
Teridax's Brotherhood
Before the Brotherhood's treason became widely known, Chirox had a squad of Toa Hagah detailed to him.[12] After Toa Norik and his team rebelled against Teridax, many of the Brotherhood's Toa Hagah were killed, while other managed to survive. Which fate attended Chirox's team is unknown.[13][14] Some of these Toa were used as raw materials for Rahi by Chirox.[15][16]
Chirox was constantly frustrated in his attempts to create a flying serpent Rahi with just enough body slime to allow it to squeeze through small crevices. Mutran succeeded in creating such a creature, which he named Lohrak as a jab at his colleague.[17]
Chirox, along with some other Makuta (including Mutran, Bitil, and Kojol), were on Destral when the Makuta evolved from biomechanical creatures into pure energy. While the Makuta were generally paralyzed during the transformation process, Chirox managed to pull off some of Kojol's armor, only for some of Kojol's essence to leak out of the resulting hole. Chirox took a sample of the substance and patched the armor; after performing extensive tests on the substance, he announced his findings to his fellow Makuta. Among other things, Chirox warned of the Makuta's new weakness to anything that would cause their energy to dissipate; accordingly, Teridax summoned the Nynrah Ghosts to Destral to harden the Makuta's armor.[17]
Chirox also discovered that the Makuta were capable of taking over robots in this new form; instead of informing the other Makuta about this new ability, he decided to play a trick on Mutran by ambushing him in a suit of Exo-Toa armor. While he managed to throw his surprised colleague the length of a hallway, Mutran recovered enough to tear an arm off of the Exo-Toa, forcing Chirox to abandon the robot and return to his own armor.[17]
Chirox and Mutran happened to both be on Destral again shortly after Teridax left for Metru Nui to seize the city. Having acquired a dead specimen of Mutran's Lohrak, Chirox angrily confronted his former friend to complain about his theft of the Lohrak name; the resulting argument was abruptly ended by an earthquake that caused the Destral Fortress to collapse on the Makuta. Chirox and Mutran were unfazed by the disaster, as they were both well aware that it was a product of the Great Cataclysm and thus an indicator that Teridax's Plan was proceeding according to design.[18]
Chirox spent much of the next millennium competing with Mutran in Rahi creation, increasing the animosity between the two Makuta.[19] Despite their mutual hatred, they collaborated with fellow Makuta Tridax to mutate Kraata into Shadow Leeches; the three Makuta also created Tridax Pods to house the Leeches.
Karda Nui
Chirox and seven other Makuta were assigned to invade Karda Nui by air in order to control Mata Nui's situation and prevent the creation of any more Toa of Light by using Shadow Leeches to turn Av-Matoran into Shadow Matoran. Antroz, the field commander of the invasion force, selected Chirox, Mutran, and Vamprah to stay up above with him; from their cavern and their hive, the Makuta harassed the local Av-Matoran while awaiting the arrival of the Ignika. Chirox wished to "study" the Av-Matoran as well, and he often expressed frustration at his fellow Makuta's (particularly Vamprah's) penchant for transforming the Av-Matoran; he was also annoyed by the stubbornness of the Av-Matoran, who continued to resist the Makuta even as their situation became more and more hopeless.[5]
One week after invading Karda Nui, Chirox accompanied Antroz and Vamprah to attack the last free village of Av-Matoran. However, none of them had noticed the recent arrival of Toa Mahri Matoro into the core, and all three Makuta were in the vicinity when Matoro donned the Ignika and revived Mata Nui from death. Caught in the explosion of light generated by the use of the Mask of Life, all three Makuta were permanently blinded.[5]
The Av-Matoran noticed that the Makuta's flight patterns had suddenly turned erratic and launched an attack on their weakened enemies. To compensate, the Makuta each chose Shadow Matoran to act as their eyes; Chirox chose Kirop to act as his.[5]
During that battle, the Toa Nuva appeared, scaring the Makuta back to their lair. Once they had regrouped, Chirox began to voice his suspicions about Teridax's plan, wondering if Teridax had not sent them to the core to simply be rid of them. Antroz remained loyal to the plan, quelling Chirox's doubts, and sent Vamprah to fetch Mutran.[5]
While Mutran worked on creating a fast flying Rahi, Chirox stood by and criticized it. Unsatisfied by Mutran's work, he tossed a Shadow Matoran into the Protodermis vat, creating a hideous creature Antroz deemed perfect, despite Mutran's objections.
Later, the Makuta battled with the three Toa Nuva, Kopaka, Pohatu and Lewa. During the battle, Chirox wounded Pohatu using a Shadow Hand.[20][21]
Chirox, along with Antroz and Vamprah, arrived at Mutran's hive just as Kopaka and Solek defeated Mutran. The three Makuta easily defeated Kopaka and Solek, and then knocked out the other Toa and Matoran with a mental attack. While Antroz interrogated the Toa, Chirox and Vamprah held the Av-Matoran hostage until Pohatu saved them. The Toa destroyed the Shadow Leech vats and then ran through Chirox and Vamprah using Pohatu's Kakama Nuva, causing the two great pain. Afterwards, the hive was destroyed by the Toa Ignika.[5]
Shortly after the hive was destroyed, the Makuta regrouped at Antroz's cavern. Icarax arrived afterwards and the Makuta ventured to the last remaining Av-Matoran village to destroy it, only to find it deserted. They sped back to their cavern to stop the Toa from getting the keystone, but they were too late. The Toa had already gotten the stone and ambushed the Makuta before they reached the cavern. Chirox and Kirop were engaged by Kopaka, Pohatu, Solek, and Photok, and began to lose ground against them. He willingly headed down to the Swamp of Secrets when Vican delivered Mutran's message telling the Makuta to regroup there and join their fellow Makuta.[5]
Chirox and Bitil were dispatched by Antroz to attack Takanuva, during the Battle for the Codrex. Chirox used his Shelek to turn Takanuva deaf and mute so they could ambush him. Takanuva responded violently, bombarding Chirox with light bolts, and throwing Kirop off his back. Chirox and Bitil managed to escape when the latter used his chain lightning power to knock the Toa out. Later on, Chirox and the other Makuta in Karda Nui learned of the Energy Storms. Blind, hurt, and unable to escape, Chirox was killed in the storm.[22]
Alternate Universes
The Melding Alternate Universe
In an alternate Spherus Magna, the Makuta were created by the Great Beings as creators of new life forms and teachers of the Three Virtues. They were also devoid of all shadow, having devoted much time to becoming beings of light.
When Mazeka and Vultraz were taken to the fortress of the Great Beings, they demanded that Vultraz stay there to be studied. When he refused, Chirox and Vamprah appeared and grabbed hold of him.
Abilities and Traits
One of the top scientists of the Brotherhood of Makuta, Chirox was infamous for creating vicious and destructive Rahi. He lived to do experiments and could typically be seen toying with some Rahi to make it more ferocious. Chirox held a personal grudge against Mutran,[23] and disliked his creations because he felt that they did not have enough teeth or intelligence. However, Chirox's own creations were less useful to the environment as a whole, a fact that he was particularly sensitive to. As he was not a fighter, he was more inclined to fight dirty than warriors such as Antroz.
Chirox possessed all the special powers common to his species, which included elemental Shadow powers, Kraata production, and the forty-two Kraata powers. Chirox often made use of his Teleportation power to travel the vast distances between his assigned regions of responsibility.[citation needed] Of the many Shadow abilities Chirox had control over, he was particularly skilled with manipulating a Shadow Hand; unlike most Makuta, he had enough skill with it to throw objects and to avoid the automatic retraction that it usually performed.
Mask and Tools
Chirox wore the Kanohi Shelek, the Mask of Silence. It could temporarily disable an opponent's ability to speak or hear. He also carried a Tridax Pod full of Shadow Leeches, and he usually utilized a pair of Hook Blades in combat.

Set Information
Chirox was released in winter 2008 and contained forty-nine pieces, as one of the three Phantoka Makuta canister sets. Pressing a button on Chirox's back opens his ribcage to deploy a Tridax pod holding the set's four Shadow Leeches. Chirox, along with the rest of the canister Phantoka, can "link-up" with his corresponding Matoran set. His arms are also folded up and can extend. Continuing the trend of blended mask colors in the 2008 Brotherhood sets, Chirox's mask features a blend of black and silver plastic.
