The Mahri Nui Fortress was a fortress located in the underwater Matoran village of Mahri Nui.

History

When the Mahri Nui landmass detached from the island of Voya Nui and tumbled into the ocean, the fortress remained intact. Because the landmass landed in the Fields of Air, a large bubble of air was formed around the fortress, which prevented the entry of the mutagenic water into the village.

During the time that the Kanohi Ignika traveled to Mahri Nui, a meeting led by the then Matoran Council Leader Defilak was held in the Fortress' Council Chamber to propose an exploratory mission of the Black Water surrounding the village. Later, when the 300-foot Venom Eel was threatening Mahri Nui, Defilak, Gar and Idris smashed all of the Lightstones in the Fortress to conceal it from the monstrous sea creature.

The fortress was destroyed when Voya Nui crushed Mahri Nui on its way to the Southern Continent after the Toa Mahri destroyed the Cord.

Locations

Matoran Council Chamber

Inside its Matoran Council Chamber, the Matoran of Mahri Nui would gather monthly to discuss issues regarding the city's defense and other problems in and around the sunken city. Decisions were made in a direct democratic fashion, with citizens raising a hand to indicate their vote (right hands signified support for a measure, while left hands showed disfavor). Matoran took turns leading the meetings month-by-month, and the leader stood above the other Matoran on a raised platform during these assemblies. The largest room in all of Mahri Nui, its domed ceiling allowed light through crystal skylights lined with Lightstones. Items that floated down from Voya Nui were also stored here before being moved to the Matoran Holy Sanctuary.[1][2]
