The Order of Mata Nui is an organization dedicated to serving the will of Mata Nui.[2] For thousands of years, the Order was extremely secretive; it was unknown to Toa, Turaga, and even the Brotherhood of Makuta. The Order eventually revealed its existence to the Matoran Universe and engaged the Brotherhood of Makuta in war. Now that Mata Nui is dormant in the Kanohi Ignika, the Order acts as peacekeepers on Spherus Magna.

History

Almost 100,000 years ago, the Hand of Artakha aimed to exact justice and pursue Mata Nui's will. In time the Hand disbanded itself because its members lacked discipline and its actions were too destructive.[3] Some members scattered,[4][5] and new Toa teams took up the mantle as public defenders.[6] One of the Hand's members, Toa Helryx, felt the need for a secretive organization dedicated to Mata Nui's will, so she invited many of the Hand's members to found the Order of Mata Nui, becoming the leader of the new organization.[6][3][7] She also established a rule that no other Toa could join the Order.[8][9]

Daxia

After they were created, the Toa Mata were sent to the Order's headquarters on Daxia. There Helryx awakened the Toa, and Hydraxon trained them. The Order eventually sent the Toa to Karda Nui, where they defended the local Av-Matoran from various threats. The Toa then entered stasis in the Codrex, ready to be deployed if the Great Spirit were felled.[10]

The Order secretly maintained the balance of the universe while hiding their existence. Among other things, the Order experimented on Ehlek's species and had Botar send many unredeemable villains to the Pit. It also assisted with the Time Slip, relocating disguised Av-Matoran to various places in the universe.[11]

1,000 years after the Great Cataclysm, the Order prepared to come out of hiding and wage war against the Brotherhood of Makuta. The organization recalled its members to Daxia and sent a message to its spy in the Dark Hunters telling him to confront the Shadowed One.[12] Brutaka and his team of expendables recovered the original leader of the Brotherhood, and Axonn and Brutaka later were sent to Zakaz to make a pact with the Skakdi.[13][14] Helryx herself revealed the Order to the Toa Hagah and sent them in search of Teridax.[15] The Order then participated in numerous campaigns against the Brotherhood on various islands, culminating in a massive struggle on Metru Nui that resulted in a Brotherhood defeat.[16]

After Makuta Teridax took over Mata Nui's body, he used his powers over the universe to destroy the Order's main base, Daxia. Many members of the Order were also killed during Teridax's reign.[17] The Order's surviving agents managed to contact the Toa Nuva and the Toa Mahri and began helping them with their resistance efforts.[18]

Noticing suspicious Rahkshi migrations to the Southern Islands, the Order sent a winged member to Tahu and Onua who informed them of the situation. Tahu ordered the agent to find and send reinforcements to the Southern Islands.[19]

After Teridax was killed, Order agents began to exit the Matoran Universe onto Spherus Magna. Several agents went to retrieve Tren Krom; however, they discovered that he had disappeared from his island.[20]

Alternate Universes

The Kingdom Alternate Universe

In this alternate universe, the Order of Mata Nui revealed their existence after Mata Nui died. They then assisted in evacuating many of the Matoran Universe's beings to the island of Mata Nui. They also helped Toa Takanuva force the Makuta back underground when they attempted to make their way to the surface world. Soon after, the Order's leader, Helryx, became a member of Turaga Takanuva's ruling council.[21]

  • Informed Tahu and Onua of suspicious Rahkshi movements.[50]
  • Evacuated the Matoran Universe onto Spherus Magna.

Members

There were hundreds[26] of agents of the Order of Mata Nui throughout its history. They usually do not recruit Matoran, Toa, or Turaga, as they have their own destinies to fulfill.[8] They also typically do not allow ex-Dark Hunters or former servants of the Brotherhood of Makuta into their ranks.[8] Exceptions to these rules exist, however, as demonstrated by Mazeka, Krakua, Ancient, who was a double agent, and Brutaka, who was recruited before the Brotherhood had gone rogue. Below is a list of those members who are known:

Axonn
  • Helryx - Leader and a founding member.
  • Axonn - A member once in charge of guarding the Kanohi Ignika.
  • Brutaka - Former guardian of the Ignika. Once a probationary member, but redeemed himself during a mission.
  • Hydraxon's replica - A duplicate of Hydraxon created by the Ignika. The Order assumes that he is the original Hydraxon as they are not aware of the first Hydraxon's death.
  • Jerbraz - An invisible member who provided information on Xia and Zakaz for the Atlas.[51][52]
  • Johmak - An ebon-armored female member with the ability to shatter into crystals who provided information on Daxia and Destral for the Atlas.[51][52]
  • Krakua - A Toa of Sonics. Formerly a servant who acted as a liaison between the Order and Toa, later recruited as a full member during the war with the Brotherhood of Makuta.
  • Mazeka - A Ko-Matoran who acts as a spy.
  • Tobduk - A ten-foot tall member who normally performs the more horrid assignments, and who provided information on Artakha and Karzahni for the Atlas.[51][52]
  • Trinuma - A nine-foot tall warrior.
  • Botar's replacement in the Order of Mata Nui, a member of Botar's species. Like his predecessor, he is responsible for taking beings to the Pit.
  • A founding member who authored an Atlas on eleven key locations of the Matoran Universe, in preparation for coming conflicts.[51]
  • An agent stationed on Metru Nui who heard Vakama's tales of the Energized Protodermis Entity.[53]
  • A four-armed, giant male member with two horns who carried a multi-bladed axe;[43] he was rapidly aged by Voporak's time field,[54] but survived.[55]
  • A member who met a dying Tahtorak who revealed that the Tahtorak on Zakaz plan to wipe out the Skakdi.[30]
  • A male member who guarded Tuyet in another dimension, until this member was convinced Tuyet was noble, and helped her escape.[33]
  • A winged female member who informed Tahu and Onua of the Rahkshi's movements after Teridax's takeover.[56]
  • Two unnamed members who planted an explosive device on Artidax.[45]
  • An unspecified number of members in the Destiny War and in the occupation and defense of Metru Nui.[49]
Botar

Former Members

  • Hydraxon - The Pit jailer; injured by an earthquake caused by the Great Cataclysm and killed by Takadox, now on the Red Star. (revived)

Servants

These beings are not actual Order of Mata Nui members, but serve and work with them:

A Mana Ko
  • Umbra - A being created by the Great Beings to guard the Kanohi Ignika.
  • Maxilos - A model of guardian robots stationed in the Pit.
  • Energy Hounds - A species of canine Rahi that could track down any being by sensing its energy.
    • Spinax - A mutated Energy Hound that used to belong to Hydraxon and later helped a Maxilos guard The Pit.

    • Vezon - Insane half-Skakdi known for his eccentric, joking personality.
    • Roodaka - Deposed Viceroy of the Visorak Horde, evading death sentences from the Brotherhood of Makuta and Dark Hunters for selling information on both to each other.
    • Spiriah - Former Makuta of Zakaz, responsible for a failed experiment to convert the Skakdi into a Brotherhood army, killed by Miserix after the mission's completion.

    • Carapar - Former Barraki warlord, killed by Tren Krom midway through the mission.
    • Lariska - Dark Hunter temporarily contracted to help Brutaka maintain control over the group.
  • Mana Ko - Large crab-like Rahi that guard certain Brotherhood of Makuta locations.
  • "Kratana" - A breed of creatures that can cause their wearers to see visions of the past and future.
  • A number of servants on the island of Stelt, through which the Order leaked word that they were turning the Great Furnace on Metru Nui into a virus works.[49]

Infrastructure

The Order was entirely devoted to secrecy, hiding their presence from the entire universe. They served the will of Mata Nui, acting in his interests. Due to their secrecy, they have no need to consider the morals of other beings in their quest to carry out the will of the Great Spirit, and as such can act with impunity. Most members carry weapons made from Protosteel,[63] and some of their equipment is provided by Artakha.

Because they carry sensitive information, all members are trained to have their minds shielded against telepathy and mental attack.[64] These barriers are extremely potent, since they were designed to withstand intrusion from Makuta, and it would take most beings centuries to millenia to eventually erode them.[65][66] Even some of the most mentally adept beings like Tren Krom can't easily penetrate a shielded mind, with only the reigning Great Spirit having the power to do so, but not without investing considerable time and effort.[67][68][17] However, the members are still vulnerable to tricks such as physical illusions that do not affect the mind directly, like those produced by Kanohi Mahiki.

It was initially decreed that no Toa or Matoran (save Helryx herself, who set the rule) could join the Order. However, in the wartime, this rule was bent to allow Krakua and Mazeka to become full members.

Depending on the role members will have, they can receive a power upgrade through experiments when they join the Order. Axonn and Brutaka chose to enhance their powers,[69] while Hydraxon and Botar did not. The experiments have been known to go wrong, however, such as when the experiment Jerbraz took part in rendered him permanently invisible.

In order to join the Order, recruits needed to have a willingness to leave friends and homeland behind, a willingness to do whatever is asked of them, and sufficient power to do it.[70]

Quotes

"I have uprooted mountains, Toa. I have ridden the tornado and filled the earthquake with fear. When you were still toiling at your mundane Matoran chores, I and others like me were holding your universe together. Do you really believe your puny powers can threaten a member of the Order of Mata Nui?"
— Brutaka, Power Play

"Try to run, at any time, and friends of mine will hunt you down – friends who make me look like a big, cuddly Ussal crab."
— Brutaka, Federation of Fear

"My name is Helryx. I run an organization you never heard of called the Order of Mata Nui. We are at war – and you've just been drafted."
— Helryx to the Toa Hagah, Dwellers In Darkness
