Hewkii (formerly Huki) is the Toa Mahri of Stone and the former Toa Inika of Stone. Huki began life as an athletic and cheerful Po-Matoran from Metru Nui. Huki later served as Onewa's right hand on the island of Mata Nui, where his valor during the Bohrok Invasion earned him the new name Hewkii. During a rescue mission to Voya Nui, Hewkii and five other Matoran transformed into the Toa Inika and later the Toa Mahri. As a Toa, Hewkii is his team's deputy leader under Jaller.

Biography

Matoran

Metru Nui

On Metru Nui, Huki served as proprietor of the most famous disk store in Metru Nui. The store's disks were of such fine Akilini quality that Turaga Dume had to ban other Metru players from using Po-Metru Disks.[1] Just prior to the Great Cataclysm, he was placed into a Matoran Sphere, and was later rescued by the Toa Metru, and taken to Mata Nui.[7]

Mata Nui

Huki after having his power decreased

Huki's body reduced in size and strength as a consequence of his confinement in a Matoran Sphere and he also lost his memory. Nonetheless, supervised by Turaga Onewa, he helped in the construction of Po-Koro with materials from Airships used in the Great Rescue.[8]

In the thousand years before the coming of the Toa Mata, Huki aided the defense of Po-Koro and established his position as koli champion. He became an incredible athlete, winning the Copper Mask several times over. During his time on the island, he stood as Onewa's right-hand Matoran, and captain of the Po-Koro Guard. He is one of the few Po-Matoran to have learned how to swim, and to be able to smash rocks with his head as well as his feet.[3] It is said that he acquired the former skill after the Ga-Matoran Maku soaked his Kanohi with water as a practical joke.[9]

Huki, Onepu, Jala, Maku, Kongu, and Matoro once encountered a Nui-Jaga while traveling to a Disk throwing tournament. Huki, overcoming a throwing problem he had been having, managed to make a perfect shot that triggered their trap. The six Matoran merged into a Matoran Nui, and got rid of the scorpion.

Huki during the Po-Koro epidemic

During the Great War, Huki was one of the first to fall victim to the infection spread by the Comet balls, which were being sold by Ahkmou. This caused him to fall deathly ill, unable to leave his bed—by the time Takua arrived in Po-Koro, Huki had nearly succumbed to the "Madness," and insisted that Takua not tell Maku of his condition, for fear of worrying her. Fortunately, due to the combined efforts of the soon-to-be Chronicler and Toa Pohatu, the source of the disease was discovered and destroyed, and Huki eventually recovered.[10]

Bohrok Invasion

When the Bohrok attacked Mata Nui, Huki organized the defense of Po-Koro from a swarm of invading Tahnok. He was sympathetic toward Hafu when their Turaga stated that toppling Hafu's own statues was the only way to block Po-Koro's gate from the Tahnok, and even offered to arrange an escort for Hafu. When the Tahnok launched a sneak attack, however, Huki could only watch in horror as his friend went out to face the Bohrok alone, toppling his statues and sealing himself off from Po-Koro. Fortunately, Pohatu arrived in time to save Hafu, and after receiving a mental nudge from a Komau-using Pohatu, Huki kicked a koli ball down, striking a makeshift lever that catapulted Pohatu and Hafu up and over Po-Koro's walls. Despite this victory, Po-Koro was soon overrun, and its inhabitants were forced to flee to Ga-Koro on a fleet of hidden boats, where Huki was reunited with Maku.[11]

They did not have much time to rest after arrival, however, because a Pahrak swarm attacked mere moments afterward. During the fray, a chunk of debris was sent hurtling toward Maku, and an improvising Huki saved her by catching the rock in a nearby fishing staff. This catch inspired a new form of koli, in which staffs would be used instead of kicking the ball. The struggle left Ga-Koro cut off from land, granting the Matoran a moment of relief from the Pahrak, and allowing Huki and Maku to enjoy some time together. But as night fell, the Pahrak struck anew, destroying the statue above Naho Falls and using the resulting debris as a bridge. By daybreak Ga-Koro was overrun, and Huki was forced to make a last stand with the others. But at the last second, the Toa's defeat of the Bahrag caused the Bohrok to collapse in lifeless heaps, their Krana inert. With peace finally restored, Maku insisted on giving Huki swimming lessons—a skill which he would later find useful.

After the Bohrok-Kal attacks, Huki was rebuilt into a stronger form and, as part of Naming Day, had his name changed to Hewkii as recognition of his heroic deeds. He was later chosen by Onewa, along with Hafu, to participate in a kolhii tournament. Hafu often attempted to outdo Hewkii, who tolerated his teammate's showmanship with good humor.[12]

Arrival of the Rahkshi

The Po-Koro team got all the way to the Ta-Koro kolhii championship, only suffering a loss to Hahli and Macku. In the championship, they won second place to the Ga-Koro team. He was evacuated along with the other Matoran when the Rahkshi attacked the village.[13]

Hewkii helped in the construction of boats to Metru Nui.[14]

Toa

Toa Inika

When Jaller recruited five Matoran from all over Metru Nui to join the Toa Nuva in their quest to save the life of Mata Nui, one of his choices was Hewkii. Together, accompanied by Takanuva, they headed to Voya Nui. After a short journey through an Underwater Chute and the Tunnel of Darkness, they reached Karzahni, where the Toa of Light was forced to leave them by a barrier which kept him from entering. Here, that place's ruler forcibly replaced Hewkii's Kakama with a Sanok. The six Matoran escaped and found six Toa canisters, which they used to transport them out of Karzahni and to Voya Nui. There, six lightning bolts from the Red Star transformed the Matoran into the Toa Inika.[15]

When the team encountered Piraka Vezok, Hewkii used his Mask of Accuracy to hurl a boulder at him, but Vezok was able to escape him. After encountering the Matoran Resistance, Hewkii and Matoro teamed up with Kazi and Balta to free the infected Matoran. However, Kazi and Balta took them to a remote region of the island instead. Hewkii thought they were being led into a trap, but it turned out that they had found a badly wounded Axonn. Matoro and Hewkii then hurried to their teammates' aid in the battle taking place in the Piraka Stronghold. Hewkii used his elemental power to encase Brutaka in a block of stone and continued fighting until Hakann and Thok stole Brutaka's power and stunned the rest of the combatants. Awakening, Hewkii joined with the other Toa and Piraka, and after obtaining a Zamor sphere designed to return the stolen powers to Brutaka, headed to track down the two rogue Piraka. In a fierce battle, Hewkii triggered the Zamor, which knocked out Hakann and Thok only moments after they triggered a devastating strike, rendering the six Toa Inika unconscious.[16]

Hewkii using his Stone powers to attack Kardas

After awakening, Hewkii and the others headed down to the Chamber of Life. On the way, Hewkii faced an illusionary Bohrok, which transformed into an illusion of a Toa Nuva, in the Chamber of Fear. Discerning the illusion, the team continued on. They then fought and defeated Umbra, a guardian of the Ignika. Once they arrived at the Chamber of Life, Jaller named Hewkii as his replacement as team leader in the case of his death. Shortly afterward, however, the Toa Inika were temporarily defeated by the Piraka before reaching the Chamber of Life. After the Piraka were in turn defeated by Vezon and Fenrakk, Hewkii fought the two guardians alongside his friends in a furious battle for the Mask of Life. The Toa were ultimately able to defeat their fused opponents by freezing them with a stasis Zamor, and Matoro successfully retrieved the Ignika from Vezon. Their victory proved short-lived, however, for Kardas quickly recovered and knocked it out of Matoro's hands. The Mask floated up the 777 steps and out into the water, where Hahli failed to retrieve it.[17]

Hewkii and the others headed into the Cord, which Axonn had opened for them. After fighting their way through Zyglak, however, Hewkii was the first to notice that Teridax had possessed Matoro's body, and exposed the trick, ultimately driving the spirit away by threatening to destroy Matoro's body.[18] Hewkii was apprehensive of retreating into the water outside the Cord, since he did not know how to swim well, but agreed and swam out into the dark waters around Mahri Nui.

Toa Mahri

Mahri Nui
Hewkii as a Toa Mahri

Upon reaching the bottom of the Cord, Hewkii and his companions were changed into Toa Mahri by an explosion of light energy from the Ignika. This had the added affect of knocking the six Toa unconscious for a time. After quickly recovering, they engaged the 300 foot-long Venom Eel which had been squeezing the Cord. During the battle, Hewkii used his new Garai to increase the eel's gravity, sending it slamming into the seafloor.[19]

The Toa then began exploring, when they encountered the city of Mahri Nui. At first, Defilak ordered them attacked, but the Toa negotiated, leaving Matoro behind while the rest would free the fields of airweed from the Barraki's armies. After a showdown between the five Toa and six Barraki, the Mahri were taken captive and imprisoned in caves. Hewkii used his Garai once again to dispose of his Takea shark guard, and watched as Hahli and Nuparu also made their escape.[19]

Nuparu, Hewkii, and Hahli began exploring the sea caves in search of the Mask of Life. Nuparu discovered a weapons cache used by the Barraki. Inside were several Cordak Blasters that the Toa took for themselves, after Nuparu nearly shot Hewkii with one by mistake. Later, the two Toa were investigating a large group of Venom Eels when they were attacked by Ehlek. The pair was forced into a trench filled with holes in which a breed of eyeless eel lived. They escaped the trench by shooting their Cordak Blasters at the eels, Hewkii then using his Garai to slam Ehlek's eels into Pridak's forces, causing a fight between Ehlek and Pridak helping Matoro who was fighting Pridak. The Toa were then told by Matoro that they had to destroy the Cord.[19]

The Mahri went to evacuate the Matoran of Mahri Nui by sending them into Voya Nui's Nui Caves, but found several dead Zyglak on the way up. They then were attacked by the Piraka who were mutated into water snakes, with just their spines intact by the Pit Mutagen they were exposed to deep under Voya Nui. Axonn saved the Mahri and took the Matoran while the Mahri rode back down the Cord in Axonn's Toa Terrain Crawler. Getting out, they saw Gadunka chasing Takadox, and Hewkii went to fight him. Deciding not to use his Garai to make it a fair fight, Hewkii threw boulders and used his Electrified Chains on the beast, to no avail. Gadunka was about to devour Hewkii when Nuparu distracted it with his Aqua Blaster Blade and Hahli sent Gadunka away and regrouped.[20]

Before the Toa Mahri could destroy the Cord, Gadunka, the 300 foot mutant Venom Eel, and the Ancient Sea Behemoth attacked them. Hewkii again defeated the Venom Eel using his Garai in the fight after being stunned by Gadunka. Then, the Toa Mahri destroyed the Cord, destroying Mahri Nui and causing Voya Nui to plunge into the water. The Mahri swam after the island to find where they needed to awaken Mata Nui, but the Great Spirit died while they completed their chase. Hewkii then assisted his fellow Toa Mahri in fending off the Barraki and their armies while buying Matoro time to bring the Great Spirit back to life as he ran after Voya Nui. It was he who stopped a school of Takea from following Matoro by increasing their weight several hundred times. When Jaller started to go Nova, Hewkii protested, but only for a moment, sensing that it was the only option. He was fighting fiercely alongside Hahli when Matoro teleported him and the other Toa Mahri back to Metru Nui. He was the first to notice that they were all breathing air once more. Later, with the help of Nuparu, he carved a statue in Matoro's honor.[20]

Metru Nui

Since returning to Metru Nui, they defeated and captured the Kardas Dragon after it came through the tunnels from Mata Nui. He later ventured out in search of Takanuva with three of the other Toa, with Jaller staying behind. When Hewkii and the others returned to Metru Nui, the Toa Hagah were teleported right before them. After meeting resistance from the Toa Mahri, Norik informed the Toa that they were there to destroy the Coliseum.[21] The Toa Mahri then fought the Toa Hagah, believing them to be impostors. Hewkii was fighting Toa Iruini, but was beaten when he swung his chains at the Toa and Iruini grabbed it and smashed Hewkii into a rock wall. Later, when Kualus used his mask to summon a giant three-headed Rahi to defeat Nuparu and lost control of it and the beast flung Nuparu into the air, Hewkii used his mask to change the gravity around the Toa of Earth in a way he had never done before, which saved Nuparu. The giant Rahi was later defeated by the combined efforts of the two Toa teams.[22]

Toa Mahri Hewkii in BIONICLE: Toa Mahri

When Toa Norik revealed to the Mahri that the answers to the many mysteries and secrets of the universe were located underneath the Coliseum and that Makuta Teridax was already down there, the five Toa Mahri helped the Hagah create a tunnel leading under the Coliseum. Hewkii helped Bomonga and Kualus hold up the structure by using his Garai, but when the six Toa went down the tunnel, Hewkii was left to hold up the Coliseum by himself. As soon as he set the building down, he later passed out from the extreme effort it cost him.[22]

After regaining consciousness, Hewkii remarked upon what the Hagah would find under the Coliseum before a strange being gave the Toa Mahri a mission: to take the Heart of the Visorak to Artidax. She then dissipated into millions of crystal fragments. The Mahri split into two groups, with Kongu and Hewkii staying behind to protect Metru Nui while the others went to Artidax. However, both Toa were attacked by the same female being as the other three Toa left, and were subsequently knocked out.[23]

When Hewkii awoke, he found himself inside the Coliseum with Kongu, their weapons having been taken from them. He woke Kongu, then started to depart, but the two were halted by the ebon female materializing in front of them. She revealed herself to be Johmak, a member of the Order of Mata Nui. Hewkii realized that the Toa Mahri had been tricked and that the Order wished for them all to have left for Artidax. Johmak proceeded to show them that this was because the Order did not want the Toa to intrude on their occupation and fortification of Metru Nui.[24]

Hewkii took part in defending the city during the Siege of Metru Nui. In the battle, he was seen fighting three opponents at once.[25] He took part in the celebrations of Mata Nui's Reawakening, after the arrival of the Toa Nuva, when they were interrupted by Teridax, who announced his rule over the universe.

Teridax's Reign
Hewkii aiding in the defense of Metru Nui

Hewkii and the other Toa defended Metru Nui from the Skakdi Nektann and the Rahkshi of Heat Vision placed under his command by Teridax.[26][27]

Later, the five Toa Mahri went to Zakaz under command from the Order to see if other Skakdi warlords were going to join Teridax like Nektann. After Hewkii scared off the guards by destroying the fortresses' stone wall, the team came upon an assembly of the Skakdi who shouted defiance to Teridax's dominance. The Skakdi then successfully fused a Vortixx, a Zyglak, a Stelt laborer, and the missing Piraka in a tank of Energized Protodermis.[6] A golden-skinned being emerged, and demanded a meal. The Skakdi eagerly mobbed around it, while the Mahri prepared to act. However, the fusion made the Skakdi's dreams real, and the Toa Mahri were soon entranced by its power. Hewkii and the other Mahri dropped their weapons and headed towards the Skakdi to offer their servitude.[28]

Spherus Magna

After Teridax was defeated, Hewkii and the other Toa Mahri left the Matoran Universe with the Skakdi and the Skakdi Fusion and arrived on Spherus Magna. The Skakdi traveled to the coast of Aqua Magna, where the fusion created a vast fortress, and took up residence in this fortress.[29]

Shortly afterwards, Annona attacked the fortress and consumed the dream energy of every Skakdi in the fortress, driving them mad. The Skakdi Fusion's power automatically granted the maddened Skakdi's dreams, causing the fortress to dissolve and aberrations to appear in the region. During the confusion, the Skakdi Fusion's hold on the Toa Mahri was broken, and Hewkii was released from his trance.[30]

Alternate Universes

The Kingdom Alternate Universe

In an alternate universe, Hewkii was among the survivors of Mata Nui's death. He was killed by Rahkshi when he and Pohatu attempted to seal off the tunnels to the Matoran Universe.

Abilities and Traits

Hewkii is well-known for his athletic prowess, and he won many Copper Masks as a Matoran. His athletic talent aided his combat skills and reflexes. Hewkii also possessed keen senses, allowing him to pinpoint weak spots. In spite of his achievements, however, Hewkii never let success get to his head, and he was generally friendly and easygoing. He was particularly protective of Macku, with whom he shared an affectionate relationship; it was thanks to her lessons that Hewkii was one of the few Po-Matoran who knew how to swim.

When he became a Toa Inika, Hewkii gained Stone powers, enabling him to create and manipulate stone, intertwined with Lightning, though the two powers could not be separated. The irregular amount of energy Hewkii's body contained caused him to glow and made him immune to the effects of Antidermis. He also had a resistance to electricity.[31] He was initially uncomfortable with his new role, desiring to find the Ignika as quickly as possible so that he could return to his old friends and his old life. However, he eventually grew accustomed to being a Toa. An athlete by nature, he also disliked the advantage afforded to him by his Mask of Power, and did not use it in combat unless necessary.

As a Toa Mahri, he lost his lightning powers, although he could shock things with his Electrified Chains, and was made a water-breather. When he became a Toa Mahri, Hewkii lost his ability to wear regular Kanohi, as he required a modified Mahri Kanohi to breathe water.[32][33] When Matoro teleported his team back to Metru Nui, Hewkii regained the ability to breathe air and wear regular Kanohi while on land.[34]

Mask and Tools

As a Matoran, Hewkii wore a powerless Kanohi Kakama. During his stay inside the realm of Karzahni, he briefly wore a powerless Kanohi Sanok, which became an organic Great Kanohi when he transformed into a Toa, granting him the power to turn virtually any object into a projectile weapon and hit almost any target he aimed for. Though the mask was useful, it was a supplement to his already keen senses. His Toa Tools as a Toa Inika were a Laser Axe, which could cleave through solid rock, and a Climbing Chain.

When Hewkii transformed into a Toa Mahri, Hewkii's mask became the Kanohi Garai, the Mask of Gravity, which allows him to manipulate and control gravity around a target. While underwater, Hewkii cannot wear regular Kanohi, but can switch masks with the other Toa Mahri if need be.[33][34] His Toa Tools are an Aqua Warblade and two Electrified Chains, transformed from his Laser Axe and Climbing Chain, respectively. He also carries two detachable blades on his right shoulder.[35] His Zamor Launcher was lost during the transformation; he subsequently replaced it with a Cordak Blaster. Hewkii did not bring the blaster when the Toa Mahri traveled to Zakaz because it would have been too large and loud for his spy mission there.[36]

Set Information

1388 Huki was released in 2001 as one of six McDonald's promotional "Tohunga" toys, comprising eight pieces. He could fling an included Bamboo Disk (which featured an image of Pohatu's Kanohi Kakama) by holding it in his right hand while one pulled back and released his right arm. This set was also released as a boxed version under the set number of 40551 in Lithuania under a partnership between LEGO and Voita,[37] and was given out for free with the 1388 set number in C1000 supermarkets in Holland during 2003.[38] The set could be combined with 1389 Onepu and 1391 Jala to create a Matoran Kaita, or with all of the other five Matoran to create a Matoran Nui, although official instructions were never released for either model.

8584 Hewkii was released in 2003 as one of six twenty-five piece Matoran sets, this time after being "rebuilt." The set featured a gear on the back which one could spin to swing his torso. This feature also let him swing an included kolhii stick to hit a pucklike piece representing an airstone, or kolhii ball. This set was also released through Kayaba, where instructions for an unnamed combination model were included, combining Macku with parts from 8585 Hafu and 8586 Macku. The set was also part of another combiner model, combining it with parts from 8581 Kopeke, 8582 Matoro, 8583 Hahli, 8585 Hafu, and 8586 Macku.

In summer 2006, a new sixty-two piece set 8730 Toa Hewkii was released, portraying his Toa Inika form. The set featured a Zamor Sphere Launcher and a light-up Laser Axe as well as four Energized Protodermis Zamor Spheres which varied in color from red to yellow. Hewkii could also be combined with 8728 Toa Hahli and 8729 Toa Nuparu in order to create Toa Jovan.

As a promotion with Nestlé, a Hewkii Inika-themed "Battle Spinner" was released in 2006. This spinner featured a pin hole, allowing it to connect with regular LEGO pieces.

8912 Toa Hewkii was released as a sixty-two piece canister set in mid-2007. A Cordak Blaster holding six mini-rockets was attached to his right wrist, while four other mini-rockets were stored on his shoulders. An Electrified Chain piece hung from each of his upper arms.

Minifigures

Toa Inika Hewkii was released as a minifigure in the 8893 Lava Chamber Gate, 8894 Piraka Stronghold, and 8624 Race for the Mask of Life playsets of 2006, the last of which was non-canon. Two different forms of Toa Mahri Hewkii were released a year later. One, appearing in the 8927 Toa Terrain Crawler and 8925 Barraki Deepsea Patrol playsets, featured his proper Kanohi Garai, while the other, appearing in the 8926 Toa Undersea Attack playset, wore a recolored Kanohi Volitak.
