Dume is a Turaga of Fire. He was formerly a Toa of Fire who was a part of his own Toa Team, before becoming a Turaga and the leader of Metru Nui.
Biography
Matoran
Dume began his life as a Ta-Matoran in an unknown land.[4][5][6][7] At some point after construction of Metru Nui was complete, he was transformed into a Toa.[8]
Toa
Dume served as a Toa for thousands of years,[9] dating back at least as far as the Time Slip,[10][note 1] during which he was a member of his own team[12] and primarily fought against Rahi and the Dark Hunters,[13] though Dume also encountered Rahkshi and Bohrok.[14] 17,500 years ago, he saved the life of a Ta-Matoran Crafter named Lhikan while visiting his village, and he befriended the Matoran.[2][15] 15,000 years ago,[16] Dume became a Turaga and was then appointed the ruler of Metru Nui, replacing the previous Turaga who had passed away.[2][17] He later had a hand in Lhikan's transformation into a Toa, 7,005 years ago.[18]
Turaga
Law Enforcement
During Dume's time in office, he ordered the construction of the Kralhi in response to an increase of Rahi inside the city,[19] and to fill a perceived need for law enforcers in Metru Nui. Around 2 dozen were constructed according to Nuparu's design, based on an idea from Ko-Metru.[20][21][22][21] However, Matoran who were brought to justice by Kralhi were too weak to go back to work for several days, resulting in Turaga Dume ordering the robots' destruction. The Kralhi refused to be taken apart, and escaped to the lower sections of the Archives and Ko-Metru.[23][22] The Kralhi became known as "Nuparu's Folly."[24]
Long after the failure of the Kralhi,[20] Nuparu was again commissioned to construct robotic defenders, and constructed the eight different Vahki models. One Vahki model was assigned to each Metru, and two were kept as special reserves, for emergencies. At the time of the Toa Metru, there were 5,000 active Vahki. Special hives were constructed to power the machines. The Vahki were tasked with enforcing order in Metru Nui, and kept the Matoran at their jobs.
Kanohi Dragon Incident
Four thousand years ago, the Kanohi Dragon was unleashed on Metru Nui by three Dark Hunters, Avak, Reidak, and Vezok. The beast wreaked havoc on the city for several hours, causing massive damage to the city, and Dume sent Vahki units out to request aid. Dume was then extorted by the three Dark Hunters, demanding payment in exchange for protecting the city; Dume immediately rebuffed them, and was saved by the arrival of the Toa Mangai, answering his summons. The Toa forced the Hunters to leave, and then defeated the Kanohi Dragon over the course of the next month, transporting the dragon away from the city to Xia.[25]
Tuyet's Betrayal
When a murdered Ta-Matoran was found in Metru Nui, Dume instructed Jaller to investigate. It was later discovered that a Toa of Water, Tuyet, was responsible for the murder, as well as two subsequent ones. After being defeated by Lhikan and Nidhiki, she was locked in the Coliseum as Lhikan and Dume decided upon a means of punishment, but she disappeared overnight.[26]
Toa-Dark Hunter War
Over the course of the next thousand years, Dume dutifully defended his city against the invading forces of Dark Hunters. At some point, Thok tried to kidnap him, but the attempt failed, and an enraged Shadowed One declared war. As the fighting broke out, Dume was forced to hole up in the Coliseum, for fear of his life. Reinforcements of nearly a hundred Toa were summoned, however the war continued to escalate, and Dume remained in the Coliseum, surrounded by a guard team at all times.[27]
At some point, more reinforcements were requested, and Lhikan sent Nidhiki to fetch them. While Nidhiki originally planned to betray the Toa, Lhikan had already and tracked Nidhiki to a meeting with the Hunters, and was aware of the treachery. The next day, Lhikan's forces ambushed the Dark Hunters, revealed Nidhiki's betrayal, and banished him from the island along with the Hunters, effectively ending the war.[27]
Rahi Rampages
When ancient sea Rahi suddenly arrived on Metru Nui, Dume agreed to house the creatures in secrecy at the Archives. The project was approved and only known to the Chief Archivist, Onepu, Whenua and Mavrah. However the study was eventually scrapped after the Rahi began to riot and caused much damage to their chambers, almost killing Whenua in the process. Mavrah then stole the Rahi for himself before they could be removed quietly from Onu-Metru.[28]
During Dume's reign as Turaga, Ga-Metru fell under attack by a rampage of Protocairns, destroying much of the land including the Great Temple. Dume was unsure how to deal with the attack, but fortunately the Rahi died and their bodies fused into a landmass replacing what they had destroyed and a new Great Temple was erected here.
The Brakas made their homes on Metru Nui, where they were such pests that the Matoran asked Turaga Dume to have them banned from the city. Dume had Vahki capture all the specimens and put them in the Archives, from which they later escaped.[29]
A colony of Dermis Turtles was discovered by the Ga-Matoran Macku in Ga-Metru. After the discovery, the population of these Rahi exploded, almost to the point of being pests. They were commonly seen in the lakes and canals of Ga-Metru, particularly fond of Liquid Protodermis pools. Dume once considered banning them from the city, but convincing arguments from Macku and Nokama changed his mind.[30]
The Lohrak were first discovered in Metru Nui by Onu-Matoran Miners in Onu-Metru while they were searching for Lightstones. The serpents quickly spread throughout the city and became a serious menace to the Matoran. Soon, every Metru had a tale of a frightening Lohrak encounter. Dume, at one point, stopped all mining projects and announced the Lohrak a protected species, in the hopes of preventing more of these creatures from being unearthed.[31]
Some Matoran kept small Rahi as pets, although a law created by Turaga Dume dictated that no Rahi larger than two feet and three inches (0.5 bio) were permitted to be kept.[32]
Great Cataclysm
Over one thousand years ago, Makuta Teridax captured Dume and placed him into a Matoran Sphere and shapeshifted into his form. Teridax masqueraded as Dume for eighteen months,[33] hiring three Dark Hunters to eliminate what was left of the Toa Mangai and furthering his plan to put the Great Spirit Mata Nui to sleep. The Toa Metru discovered Dume sleeping in his pod after reuniting below Po-Metru. However, a group of Lohrak ambushed the group, and the Toa were forced to abandon Dume in his pod.[34]
Teridax triggered the Great Cataclysm, causing massive damage to the city, while the Toa Metru fled to discover a new home while the rest of the population remained in stasis. Due to a malfunction in his Matoran Sphere, Dume awoke sometime during the events of the Great Rescue.[2] He was not in the pod long enough to suffer any side effects.[35]
After the defeat of Sidorak and the Visorak hordes, Dume chose to stay on Metru Nui rather than join the Matoran on Mata Nui.[2] He began rebuilding the city using his Kanohi Kiril.[36] Approximately 500 years after the Matoran had left, Dume helped the Rahaga and Keetongu fend off a rogue Visorak troupe from Metru Nui.[3]
Longfangs settled in Onu-Metru, especially the Archives. After the Great Cataclysm, most of the smaller Rahi that made up their diet fled, forcing the Longfangs to move up onto the surface of the city to hunt. Dume tried to convince the Rahaga to capture the Longfangs, but the Rahaga refused, insisting that the Rahi had become part of Metru Nui's natural ecosystem.[37]
Metru Nui's Repopulation
When the Matoran returned to Metru Nui, Dume and Nuju began paying close attention to the stars, eventually coming to the horrifying conclusion that Mata Nui was slowly perishing. While the Matoran were rebuilding the city, Dume called a conference of the Toa Nuva and Turaga, revealing his discovery. He spoke of the legendary Mask of Life, a powerful artifact that could save the Great Spirit's life. Shortly after revealing this news, Dume led the Turaga and the Toa Nuva to a spherical room underneath Onu-Metru where six Toa Canisters were floating. He then witnessed the departure of the Toa Nuva for the island of Voya Nui.[38]
After Jaller became angry with the Turaga due to their refusal to tell the Matoran where the Toa Nuva had gone and Nokama later informed the Ta-Matoran of what had happened, Dume grew furious, going so far as to say Nokama betrayed them by revealing to Jaller what the Turaga had learned. He also refused to send Takanuva after the Toa Nuva, claiming that it was his destiny to defend the city. Takanuva directly disobeyed his orders, and journeyed with Jaller and his crew of Matoran, though he later returned.[39] Later, Jaller's team returned as the Toa Mahri, though one of them, Matoro, did not because he sacrificed himself to revive Mata Nui.
Back in Metru Nui, Dume and the other people of Metru Nui continued the reconstruction of Metru Nui until the usage of the Staff of Artakha. Some time later, he was imprisoned in the Coliseum along with the other Turaga by the Order of Mata Nui.[40]
When the Toa Nuva finally returned from Karda Nui, Dume gave a victory speech to the Matoran from the Coliseum.[41]
Teridax's Reign
However, during Dume's speech, he was cut off by Makuta Teridax, who informed the gathering that he had taken over Mata Nui's body and thus claimed dominance over the entire Matoran Universe.[41] Dume fled with the other residents of Metru Nui into the Archives, where they hid from Rahkshi. With the rest of the Turaga, he found Krahka, who led the Toa Nuva through underground tunnels to the shoreline.[42] Some time later, he, along with the other Turaga of Metru Nui, were imprisoned in the Coliseum, with Ahkmou taking their place as the new "Turaga".[43]
After the Mata Nui Robot was heavily damaged and Teridax killed as a result of the Battle of Bara Magna, Dume, along with the surviving residents of Metru Nui, immigrated to the reformed Spherus Magna.[44][45]
Alternate Universes
Toa Empire Alternate Universe
In an alternate universe, Dume attempted to stand up to Tuyet, who had defeated Lhikan with Nidhiki's help, and as a result he was placed in stasis inside the Archives. He was eventually freed by the Takanuva of the core dimension.[46] He, Takanuva, and Takua were captured by the Makuta living in the Archives.[47] He later joined the battle against the Toa Empire and rallied Lesovikk's unit.[48]
The Kingdom Alternate Universe
In an alternate universe, Turaga Dume and the other Turaga of Metru Nui organized a mass migration to the island of Mata Nui following the Great Spirit's death. Once a stable society was formed, Dume became a member of the ruling council of the Kingdom of the Great Spirit, with its leader being Turaga Takanuva.[49]
Abilities and Traits
As a Toa of Fire Dume could create, control, and absorb fire. When he became a Turaga, his control over fire was greatly weakened. As a Turaga, Dume was involved in Matoran affairs to some extent; for example, he once modified the rules of Akilini to forbid Matoran from using disks produced outside their Metru.[50] That said, the Turaga is somewhat stubborn and does not interact with the Matoran of Metru Nui nearly as much as the six Turaga of Mata Nui do.[38] Despite this, the Matoran see Dume as wholly benevolent, radiating wisdom and a paternal feeling for all Matoran.[51][52] The Turaga has proven himself to be fiercely protective of both Metru Nui and its inhabitants, as evident when he repeatedly refused to allow the Dark Hunters to take root in the city, even when his own life was put on the line.[25]
Mask and Tools
Dume wears the Kanohi Kiril, the Mask of Regeneration, which allows him to repair damage done to inorganic matter, such as buildings. The mask became a Noble Kanohi upon his transformation into a Turaga. He carries a staff as his Badge of Office, and has been known to use a Kanoka Launcher at times.[3]
Set Information
8621 Turaga Dume & Nivawk was released in 2004 portraying him in his Turaga form along with Nivawk, using twenty-three of the sets 179 pieces. A section of the Nivawk's armor could hold the Turaga Dume figure. Dume's & Nivawk's parts were also part of 10202 Ultimate Dume, Teridax's form in the climax of the 2004 story.
Quotes
"Sometimes, the ways of Mata Nui are a mystery indeed."
— Dume, The Many Deaths of Toa Tuyet
"I didn't spend the last thousand years playing with puzzle stones or making a dictionary of chutespeak, Lewa."
— Dume to Lewa, Island of Doom
"Today, we honor Mata Nui, who has at last returned to us from the darkness into which he was cast by the evil Makuta. And we honor the Toa Nuva, who awakened the Great Spirit once more... and all the Toa, living and dead, who helped bring about this glorious day."
— Dume, Mata Nui Rising
Trivia
- Turaga Dume was voiced by Gerard Plunkett in Legends of Metru Nui.
- After 2004, Turaga Dume’s comic appearance was based on how he looked in the film, marking him as the only character whose movie design appeared alongside traditional set depictions.
- In the Legends of Metru Nui novelization, Turaga Dume is described as maskless while inside the Matoran Sphere. However, in the movie he is depicted with his mask still worn. The movie's depiction is considered canon.[53] The Noble Kiril worn by the disguised Makuta Teridax was a separate mask.[54][55][56]
- When 8763 Toa Norik was designed, there was discussion among the story team about the set representing Toa Dume, but this idea was vetoed by Bob Thompson.[57][58][59]
- Because he was not originally a native of Metru Nui, Dume's Kanohi is very likely not made from a Kanoka disk.[60]
