Onepu is an accomplished Onu-Matoran native to Metru Nui.

Biography

Metru Nui

On Metru Nui, Onepu was an Archivist who secretly wished to catch Rahi himself, rather than waiting for the delivery of new captures by the Vahki. Onepu was best known during this time for leading the expedition that discovered a fully preserved Bohrok nest under Le-Metru.[3]

After Vahki squads found and subdued a set of particularly violent aquatic Rahi, Turaga Dume reluctantly permitted Archivists Whenua, Mavrah and Onepu—handpicked by the Chief Archivist—to study the abnormal Rahi.[4]

Due to the project's secrecy, the three researchers became close, spending nearly all of their waking hours in analysis together. Fatigue from prolonged overwork soon took its toll on the Matoran, however, and a failed Rahi escape destroying many archive levels brought a swift cancellation to their research. In protest, Mavrah smuggled the creatures out of the city, leaving Onepu and Whenua to return to their prior roles in the Archives.[4]

Onepu was eventually captured by Vahki under order of a disguised Makuta Teridax and forced into a Matoran Sphere, where he would remain for a millennium until being rescued by the Toa Metru and reawakened on the island of Mata Nui.[5][6]

Mata Nui

Onepu after being forced into a Matoran Sphere

Exposure to the effects of a Matoran Sphere caused Onepu to become physically smaller and weaker, as well as lose his memories of Metru Nui. Nevertheless, under Turaga Whenua's instruction, he took part in the construction of Onu-Koro, making use of materials from the Airships used in the Great Rescue.[7]

On Mata Nui, Onepu became Turaga Whenua's Right Hand[8] and Special Aide.[9] An Ussal racing champion for at least five consecutive seasons, Onepu was a member and the captain of the Ussalry,[3] and occasionally a Miner. Onepu was Taipu's best friend, but sometimes took advantage of him, such as when he talked Taipu into doing his mining work for him.[9]

Onepu, a competitor in the sport of Disk throwing, was traveling to a tournament with Jala, Maku, Kongu, Matoro and Huki when they encountered a Nui-Jaga. They successfully devised a method to trap it, and merged into a Matoran Nui in order to remove it from the vicinity.[10]

After Whenua was alerted to the possibility of a Rahi attack as the Toa Mata descended into Mangaia, Onepu and the Ussalry went to work defending the village.[11] When the infected Rahi began to retreat, Onepu and the Ussalry traveled to the Kini-Nui, where he came to the Chronicler's Company's aid. After helping them defeat Rahi, Onepu told Takua to travel to Onu-Koro, due to a discovery that Takua would be interested in.[12]

Onepu on Mata Nui

Later, during the Bohrok attack on Mata Nui, Onepu was in the village when the Gahlok struck and flooded the cavern. When this attack happened, he and Taipu helped direct everyone to safety. As Nuparu came running towards them to escape, the flood of water hit all three Matoran, and propelled them into a tunnel. When they awoke, Onepu spoke with Taipu when Nuparu joined them unexpectedly. After introducing themselves, Nuparu used his Lightstone to illuminate the area. The group found themselves near a Gahlok, but, as Onepu pointed out, one devoid of its krana. Struck by an idea, Nuparu began to work on an invention using the Bohrok's parts, while Onepu and Taipu helped him. Eventually, they used his invention, the Boxor, to battle and win against a squad of Gahlok.[13]

After the swarm's defeat, Onepu was defeated by a creature who sought Onua's Nuva Symbol.[14] He was later rebuilt into a stronger form after the defeat of the Bohrok-Kal.[15]

He was evacuated from Onu-Koro during the Rahkshi invasion.[16][17]

Return to Metru Nui

Onepu aided in the construction of Boats to return to Metru Nui.[18] Once there, Onepu helped rebuild the city. He temporarily stopped his work of reconstruction on order of Jaller, to force the Turaga to reveal where the Toa Nuva had gone, but he eventually got back to work until the Staff of Artakha repaired the city.[19][20]

Following the Battle of Bara Magna, which caused Teridax's death, Onepu shifted residence from Metru Nui to Spherus Magna.[21][22]

Abilities and Traits

Onepu is extremely hard-working and brave, but is slightly lacking in modesty. He always ensures that other Matoran are aware of his accomplishments.[9] He was appointed to Captain of the Ussalry due to his reputed skill with battling with Ussal mounts. As an Ussal rider, he has mastered using agility, speed, balance, and strategy to his advantage, earning the title of Great Ussal Race champion for five consecutive seasons.[23]

Like all Onu-Matoran, Onepu is stronger and can see better in the dark than other Matoran types.[24]

Onepu

1389 Onepu was released as a set in September 2001 as one of the six promotional BIONICLE Happy Meal Toys at McDonald's. These six eight-piece "Tohunga" sets each featured a Bamboo Disk which they could fling from their right arm when one pulled it back and released it. Onepu's featured an image of the Kanohi Pakari with the word "Pakari" printed beneath it. The set could be combined with 1388 Huki and 1391 Jala to create a Matoran Kaita, or with all of the other five Matoran to create a Matoran Nui, although official instructions were never released for either model.

Quotes

"Onepu is my best friend in all of Onu-Koro. He is very smart and knows a lot about Ussal Crab racing and fighting Rahi. He is supposed to be digging, too, but he showed me how I can do both our digging at the same time. That's how smart he is!"
— Taipu, Mata Nui Online Game

"I am Onepu, High Commander of the Ussalry, Veteran of the Makuta Wars, Right Hand of Turaga Whenua, and Champion Kolhii Forward of Onu-Koro. At your service, my Lady."
— Onepu to Hahli, The Final Chronicle

Trivia

  • In v0.006 of BIONICLE: The Legend of Mata Nui, Onepu stands outside a hut in Onu-Koro, where he instructs Onua to speak to three dancing Onu-Matoran, learn the Dance of Onua, and then return to perform the Takara dance. Onepu's role was cut from the game later in development, and he does not appear in the October 23 build.[25]
  • Onepū means "sand" in Māori.
  • The roles of Onepu and Taipu were swapped at multiple times during development. In the August 2000 story bible, Onepu is said to serve as Whenua's left-hand, while Taipu serves as his right-hand. However, both possessed the character traits that they would have in the final story.[26] This is also reflected in dialogue from BIONICLE: Quest for the Toa. Meanwhile, on BIONICLE.com in 2001, and in the glossary of the October 23 build of BIONICLE: The Legend of Mata Nui, Onepu was attributed the character traits of Taipu, though was nonetheless stated to stand on Whenua's right.[27]
  • Early in the development of the 2006 story, Onepu was planned to become a Toa Inika. However, he was replaced in this role by Nuparu.
