The Rahi Nui is a monstrous Rahi created by Makuta Teridax.

History

The Rahi Nui was created on Destral[2] by Makuta Teridax using Viruses and Liquid Protodermis for the purpose of serving Dark Hunters Nidhiki and Krekka as a tracking beast.[1] Having the Rahi Nui as their "pet", they used it to hunt down and kill Toa.[3][4]

At some point during his long time spent wandering the universe, Lesovikk encountered the beast and was able to defeat it.[5][6]

The first recorded encounter with the Rahi Nui happened after the Great Cataclysm, when it teleported to Teridax's underground lair beneath Mata Nui, following the "scent" of the Toa Metru, on their journey to Metru Nui.[7] As they were making their way through the underground tunnels, the Rahi Nui suddenly appeared and attacked them. After a short but intense battle, the Rahi Nui defeated all the Toa Metru except Vakama and Nuju. During combat, Nuju managed to examine a footprint left by the creature, and made a discovery: though it increased in size after feeding upon their elemental energies, its overall mass remained the same. Sharing this news with Vakama, they repeatedly hit the Rahi Nui until its body's molecules drifted apart. Before it fell, however, it was able to sting Toa Nokama, dealing her a near-fatal wound.[8]

After several hundred years, the Rahi Nui managed to reconstitute itself on Mata Nui, although it was weakened and had lost its Kanoka powers.[1][9][10][11]

The Rahi Nui was next encountered 1,000 years after the Great Cataclysm in the Place of Shadow, where Teridax set it to kill the Toa Nuva and Turaga Vakama. Much like their predecessors, the Toa Nuva remained unable to defeat it for a short time, due to their refusal and inability to show unity and work together as a team. In the end, however, Turaga Vakama used his Kanohi Huna and the Rahi Nui's recognition of his voice to lure the beast into a wall. The Rahi Nui charged so ferociously that when its head rammed into the wall, the horns stuck, and the Turaga and the Toa Nuva were able to make a getaway.[12]

The Rahi Nui eventually freed itself and returned to the Matoran Universe below.[13][14]

After the Mata Nui Robot was critically damaged in the Battle of Bara Magna, the Rahi Nui left the Matoran Universe and immigrated to Spherus Magna.[15]

Abilities and Traits

The Rahi Nui combines elements from several Rahi species: the head of a Kane-Ra, the body of a Muaka, the stinger of a Nui-Jaga, enlarged wings from a Nui-Rama, and the arms of a Tarakava. The Rahi Nui can stretch its neck just like the Muaka and the Kane-Ra.[16] The Rahi Nui is usually quadrupedal, although it can stand on its hind legs to attack with its arms.[17]

The Rahi Nui also possessed all eight of the standard Kanoka powers and was able to feed on Elemental Powers, making it invulnerable to elemental attacks. Feeding on Elemental Power made the Rahi Nui grow in size, though it maintained the same mass. It could also sense the presence of Elemental Energy.[7] However, it lost all of these abilities when its molecules were dispersed by the Toa Metru, and did not regain them when it reformed.[1]

Quotes

"This beast is no simple Rahi. It served the Dark Hunters. It hunted and killed at their command. There is no fear of Toa in its heart - to this creature, we are prey."
— Vakama's thoughts, Maze of Shadows

"Beware the Rahi Nui...beware the beast of horns and claws, who stalks land, sea, and air. Born to seek the Toa, it will bring down all the works of Matoran in its path. You will know it by its roar, by the shaking of the ground as it strides, by the fierce glow of its eyes. Guard well against it, or it shall be the end of all."
— Turaga Vakama, Tales of the Masks

"I never imagined my destiny would be to be flattened by a walking zoo."
Toa Nuva Pohatu, Tales of the Masks
