Blade Burrower
"When I lived in the Archives, I tried mapping the Blade Burrower tunnels. They don't seem to be random at all. It seems like they are building something. What it might be, and why, I don't know."
— Rahaga Bomonga, Rahi Beasts

Blade Burrowers are powerful and mysterious Rahi.
History
The Blade Burrower species was created by Makuta Mutran using Viruses and Liquid Protodermis to be one of the Rahi to inhabit the Matoran Universe.[2][3] The Great Beings tampered with the makeup of the Blade Burrowers, which caused the Rahi to begin digging a series of tunnels as a reminder of Mata Nui's mission.[4]
During the reign of the League of Six Kingdoms, Barraki Kalmah commissioned Blade Burrowers, among other Rahi, to be sent to his fortress. Mutran programmed the Blade Burrowers he sent to die after a span of three days.
While searching through Kalmah's fortress after the League's defeat, Mutran noticed the Burrowers, which had survived their expiration date because of a mistake he made.[5] He was intrigued by the series of tunnels they were creating, though he was unable to decipher the meaning. He later forced a captured Toa with a Kanohi Rau to communicate with the Burrowers, but the Burrowers themselves did not understand the purpose of their behavior.[6]
Much later, Rahaga Bomonga tried following a population of Burrowers on Metru Nui in an attempt to map out their tunnel patterns, but his attempts were also unsuccessful.[7]
After the Mata Nui Robot was critically damaged in the Battle of Bara Magna, many Blade Burrowers emigrated from the Matoran Universe to Spherus Magna.[1]
Abilities and Traits
Using their powerful claws, Blade Burrowers dig tunnels in a fixed pattern. In the Archives, Archivists mistook these passageways to be parts of the Archives and wandered down them, only to never be seen again.[7]
Blade Burrowers have very poor eyesight; instead of using their vision to hunt down prey, they use their sense of smell. When food in the Archives began to run low, they would often venture to the surface and cause massive destruction. When the Vahki were active, they used to put these raging Blade Burrowers into containers as fast as possible, for the Rahi had long club-like tails that they could swing around, causing more trouble by knocking others over and causing them to run.[7]
Trivia
- The Blade Burrower was an entry sent into the LEGO Group as part of the LEGO Magazine Rahi Building Challenge. It was built by Daniel Settle and given a name and story role by Greg Farshtey in the book BIONICLE: Rahi Beasts.
- The map that Blade Burrowers were programmed to dig again and again was the symbol that represents the Three Virtues, which was meant to remind Mata Nui of his mission.[8][9]
