The Exo-Toa are suits of armor created on order of the Brotherhood of Makuta by the Nynrah Ghosts.
History
The Exo-Toa were first built by the Nynrah Ghosts for the Brotherhood of Makuta,[2][3][4][5] then mass-produced by the Vortixx on the island of Xia.[6][7] The Brotherhood used them to guard the fortresses of the Brotherhood, and additionally placed six in the Bohrok Nests to defend against a possible premature release of the Bohrok.[1]
An Exo-Toa was used as a test subject by Chirox to test the Makuta's ability to possess robots after discovering their evolution and to play a joke on Mutran. This suit was broken by Mutran.[8]
Several Exo-Toa were used in the raid on Artakha by Makuta Kojol. The island's inhabitants were defenseless against them, and Kojol was able to invade the island and take the Kanohi Avohkii from Artakha's fortress. Those particular Exo-Toa were destroyed by the Order of Mata Nui soon afterward, along with Kojol and the Visorak and Rahkshi who took part in the raid, as part of the purge of all who knew of the island's location.[9]
When the Brotherhood began to plot against Mata Nui, they used Exo-Toa, Fohrok, and the Visorak swarms in an attempt to conquer the Matoran Universe. During their Raid on the Destral Fortress, Norik and Iruini encountered and destroyed many Exo-Toa acting as sentries for the Brotherhood of Makuta's fortress at Destral.[10]
When the Great Cataclysm struck, rubble from Destral's fortress crushed the Makuta of Stelt's armor.[11] The Makuta's energy was placed inside of an Exo-Toa until the armor could be repaired.[12]
When the war between the Brotherhood and the Dark Hunters broke out, Exo-Toa were deployed against the Brotherhood's enemies, though Dark Hunters, like the future Piraka Reidak, were able to destroy them with relative ease.[13]
During the attack of the Bohrok swarms, the Toa Mata encountered the six Exo-Toa that had been placed in the Bohrok Nests, which were deep in the caverns of Mata Nui[14]. When the Toa found themselves in a circular chamber with slots in the floor, they placed forty-eight krana that they had gathered in the slots, causing doors placed around the room's walls to open. Entering the doors, the Toa discovered the suits, and used them as intended in an attempt to defeat the two Bahrag. Tahu fired an Electro-Rocket at the Bahrag, but it was stopped by the Bahrag's barrier.[14] Tahu realized that the Exo-Toa hindered their Elemental Powers, and the Toa shed their armored suits.[15]
When the Toa Nuva later went back to stop the Bohrok-Kal from freeing the Bahrag from their Toa Seal, they found the Exo-Toa on autopilot, fighting the Bohrok-Kal. The six elite Bohrok eventually destroyed the Exo-Toa, and continued their mission.[16] When the powers of the Bohrok-Kal were later overloaded, parts of the broken Exo-Toa were magnetized to Gahlok-Kal, crushing it.[17]
After Turaga Vakama told the Toa Nuva about the city of Metru Nui, the Onu-Matoran inventor Nuparu secretly salvaged pieces of the Exo-Toa and brought these pieces to Metru Nui. He had planned to study them, but was unable to get a chance to do so before leaving Metru Nui on Jaller's quest to save the Toa Nuva.[1]
Exo-Toa were utilized by the Brotherhood of Makuta to defend against the Order of Mata Nui's surprise attacks on their strongholds during the Destiny War. After Teridax's takeover of the universe, he used Exo-Toa to round up inhabitants and send them to Metru Nui for work. A group of twelve Exo-Toa found Tahu, Johmak, Lariska, Kopeke and Krahka in Karzahni and attempted to direct them back to Metru Nui.[18] However, the team was able to escape being captured with help from the arrival of Onua, who dropped them in a chasm using his Earth powers.[19]
Teridax was later killed during the Battle of Bara Magna, and the Exo-Toa were released from his control.[20]
Abilities and Traits
The Exo-Toa possess an autopilot mode and artificial intelligence, enabling them to function without a pilot Toa. As armor, the Exo-Toa greatly enhances the physical endurance and strength of the wearer. Due to an unavoidable design flaw, the Exo-Toa requires built-in inhibitors which completely block the use of a Toa's elemental powers, because the intense energies would damage the machine, although they do not limit Kanohi.[15][21][22][23][24] They have various sensors they use to interact with their surroundings, such as locating targets using heat sensors, and they also possess a speech function.[18]
The machinery are also complex enough to be manipulated by Makuta. Makuta Teridax, after taking control of the entire Matoran Universe, was able to command legions of Exo-Toa, and even speak directly through them.[18]
The Exo-Toa have two weapons: a boxing claw on one arm that can extend and deal a powerful blow and an Electro-Rocket on the other hand, which fires a missile.
