Lohrak are vicious winged Rahi.

History

Some time before the rise of the League of Six Kingdoms,[2] the first iteration of the Lohrak species was created by Makuta Chirox using Viruses and Liquid Protodermis to be one of the Rahi to inhabit the Matoran Universe.[3] Chirox's goal was to create a flying serpent with enough exterior slime to slither through small cracks, but not enough to leave a trail. The Lohrak he created, however, could not do so, which caused Chirox to work for a long time to perfect his creation. Mutran saw this as an opportunity to outdo Chirox, so he set to work trying to beat his rival.[4] Shortly before the Great Cataclysm, Mutran succeeded in his work, and the old version of the Lohrak was replaced by the new one.[3]

The Lohrak were first discovered in Metru Nui by Onu-Matoran Miners in Onu-Metru while they were searching for Lightstones. The serpents quickly spread throughout the city and became a serious menace to the Matoran. Soon, every Metru had a tale of a frightening Lohrak encounter. Turaga Dume, at one point, stopped all mining projects and announced the Lohrak a protected species, in the hopes of preventing more of these creatures from being unearthed.[5]

1,001 years ago, the Toa Metru and Turaga Lhikan stumbled upon a nest of the Lohrak while attempting to rescue the Matoran of Metru Nui from Makuta Teridax. They were able to fend off the Rahi, and escaped in a Vahki Transport.[6]

Once the Visorak arrived in Metru Nui, the Lohrak were hunted down and mutated into even more horrid creatures.[7] Some Lohrak fled through the Great Barrier to Mata Nui, and made scattered appearances there for a period of 1,000 years.[8] These Lohrak migrated back to Metru Nui when the Toa Nuva unleashed the Bohrok on the island.[9]

After the Great Spirit Robot was critically damaged in the Battle of Bara Magna, all surviving Lohrak left the Matoran Universe and immigrated to Spherus Magna.[1]

Lohrak Hordika

When exposed to Hordika Venom, Lohrak become Lohrak Hordika, growing far larger and gaining the ability to emit sonic shrieks.

One Lohrak was cocooned and mutated into a Hordika in the Le-Metru Moto-Hub. Shortly before the Toa Metru arrived to rescue the rest of the Matoran, the Lohrak Hordika emerged from its cocoon and created a Sonic Entity with its powers. The Toa Metru defeated the Sonic Entity, and began to descend to the Archives beneath, where they encountered the Lohrak Hordika. The Lohrak Hordika forced the Toa upwards into the Moto-Hub and smashed a hole in the wall, which drew the attention of the Vahki. During the three-way battle that ensued, Nuju used his power to ice over the Lohrak Hordika's wings, impairing its ability to fly. The Lohrak Hordika then departed for Ta-Metru, seeking a source of heat to melt the ice.[10][11] It is unknown if this Lohrak is still alive.

Abilities and Traits

A Lohrak as it may have appeared in Legends of Metru Nui, had it not been omitted

The Lohrak's bat-like wings allow them to fly at extreme speeds, and their rows of razor-sharp teeth make them highly dangerous. Lohrak use claws on the ends of their tails to snatch prey and carry them off in surprise attacks before finishing them off and feeding. Their flesh is also poisonous.[12]

Under normal circumstances, Lohrak are relatively small, but the mutant Lohrak was around 2.2 Bio (ten feet or three meters) long with a 4.4 Bio (twenty foot or 6.1 meter) wingspan. Exposure to Hordika Venom gave it a power scream ability similar to the Power Scream Rahkshi. Its screech emitted a sonic force that could shatter rock, metal, and almost anything else. It also had the power to create creatures composed entirely of sonic force.[7][13]

Set Information

The Lohrak is a combiner model of 8621 Turaga Dume & Nivawk and 8622 Nidhiki. The instructions were released in the September-October 2004 issue of LEGO Magazine. Pressing a bar on the Lohrak's back allows one to open the lower jaw. Upon releasing the bar, the jaw snaps closed.

Quotes

"I simply knew how long Chirox had been struggling to develop a flying serpent with just the right amount of exterior slime to allow it to slither through small crevices, while not so much that it left a trail wherever it went. And as soon as he was back in his body, I was going to take a great deal of joy in introducing him to my Lohrak, wings, slime, and all..."
Mutran, The Mutran Chronicles

"Mutated Lohrak are easily three to five times the size of an average specimen, and one is more than enough to create a disaster area."
Rahaga Norik, Rahi Beasts

"Lohrak had always been more than happy to squeeze the life out of prey."
— Narrator, Web of the Visorak

"Tell me, Tahu, have you ever seen a kavinika in battle with a lohrak? It can end in one of two ways—either the lohrak kills the kavinika, or the kavinika sinks its teeths into the lohrak and slays him. What makes it amusing is that the organic tissue of a lohrak is poisonous. The instant the kavinika bites down... it dies."
"Is there a point to this story?"
"It's very simple. Even if the kavinika wins, it loses. You might well want to keep that lesson in mind."
Krika and Tahu, Swamp of Secrets

Trivia

  • The Lohrak was originally scheduled to make an appearance in Legends of Metru Nui, but it did not make it into the final cut. They only appeared in the novelization. However, the Lohrak model did have a cameo appearance in the Web of Shadows.
