Frost Beetles are heavily-armored, intelligent Rahi.
History
The Frost Beetle species was created by the Makuta using Viruses and Liquid Protodermis to be one of the Rahi to inhabit the Matoran Universe.[2]
A population of Frost Beetles made their home in Ko-Metru, establishing their habitat near the Knowledge Towers. They were more than capable of driving almost all other Rahi life out of Ko-Metru and claiming it as their territory, but instead they spent most of their time trying to force their way into the Knowledge Towers, even succeeding to break in sometimes. Once inside, they ignored Matoran, Rahi, and Vahki alike—instead, they headed straight for the Memory Crystals stored inside and consumed them. Occasionally, they mistook Knowledge Crystals for Memory Crystals and devoured them instead.[3]
No Frost Beetles were ever spotted on the island of Mata Nui.[4]
After the Mata Nui Robot was critically damaged in the Battle of Bara Magna, many Frost Beetles emigrated from the Matoran Universe to Spherus Magna.[1]
Abilities and Traits
Frost Beetles are large and hostile, and possess razor-sharp claws and near Matoran-level intelligence.
It was often said in passing that the Beetles had obtained this intelligence because their habitat was so close to the Knowledge Towers. Some dismissed this as a mere coincidence, but the Ko-Matoran scholar Matoro theorized that long ago, some Beetles managed to acquire and consume several Memory Crystals, somehow absorbing the knowledge stored inside. That knowledge was passed through to the entire species through a hive mind, increasing all of their intelligence levels.[3]

- The Frost Beetle was an entry sent in to LEGO as part of the LEGO Magazine Rahi Building Challenge. It was created by Daniel Müller and was given a name and story role by Greg Farshtey in the book BIONICLE: Rahi Beasts.
