Pewku (formerly Puku) is an Ussal crab who has had a long history of being passed down between Matoran.

Biography

Puku was created by the Makuta using Viruses and Liquid Protodermis to be one of the Rahi to inhabit the Matoran Universe.[4]

On Metru Nui, she was the favorite Ussal of Orkahm,[5] and pulled Ussal Carts for him. During the search for the Great Disks, Puku's name was used as a marker on a chute, which Orkahm had to take to travel to Sector Three.[5][6] After the Great Cataclysm, Toa Whenua suggested that they take Puku with them.[7]

On Mata Nui, she became Onepu's racing crab, and the two went on to win the Great Ussal Race three times. After Puku became too old for racing, Onepu entrusted her to Midak. Under his care, she worked by transporting Matoran between Po-Wahi and Onu-Koro. It was said that while Puku was old, she could navigate the pitch-black tunnels better than any Matoran. It was while working as a transport crab that she first met the wandering Takua and took a liking to him.[8] When the Ussalry arrived at the Kini-Nui to assist Takua and his company, Puku voluntarily came with them, and Takua rode her back to Onu-Koro just before he descended into Mangaia.[9]

After the defeat of the Bohrok-Kal, Takua assumed full ownership of Puku. After the Naming Day ceremony, in which brave Matoran were renamed in honor of their acts against the Bohrok, Takua, feeling she merited the honor as well, renamed Puku to Pewku in his own private ceremony.[10] When the Kanohi Avohkii was discovered, Takua and Jaller rode Pewku all over the island, braving dangers such as Graalok and the Rahkshi. When Pewku and her master were searching for the seventh Toa, they traveled to Onu-Koro where they witnessed a fierce battle between three Rahkshi and the Toa Nuva, from which they managed to escape.[11]

When Takua was transformed into Takanuva, Jaller became Pewku's new owner, and she resided with him in Metru Nui.[12][1] After Jaller left to find and assist the Toa Nuva, Pewku befriended Kapura.[1] When Toa Mahri Jaller returned to Metru Nui, he decided to give Pewku back to Orkahm.[13]

After the Mata Nui Robot was critically damaged in the Battle of Bara Magna, Pewku and the Matoran left the Matoran Universe and immigrated to Spherus Magna.[2][3]

Alternate Universes

Toa Empire Alternate Universe

In this universe Pewku pulled a cart driven by Jaller, provided by Orkahm,[14] accompanied by Toa Kualus and Toa Bomonga, on a trip through Karzahni to deliver the Kanohi Vahi to Tuyet in Metru Nui.[15]

Abilities and Traits

Pewku has many natural abilities, traits common in all Ussal crabs, such as being able to climb vertically upwards. She is also capable of curling up into her shell as a defensive measure.[11]

Like all Ussal Crabs, Pewku has two natural crab claws.[11] She has an unusual coloring and is relatively old,[8] and has consequently grown much larger than the average Ussal Crab,[16] with a carapace wide enough to accommodate two riders rather than the usual one.[11]

Pewku as a set

In early material, Pewku was depicted as a blue and yellow recolor of the Ussal model, which was released as a set as part of the 10023 BIONICLE Master Builder Set in 2002. This form could not be accurately built in real life because not all bricks were available in the proper colors, but it was the only form depicting Pewku before her later growth.

Pewku was officially released as 8595 Takua & Pewku in 2003, packaged with her owner, Takua. The set contained 221 pieces and featured non-canon wheels on the bottom which operated a complex gear function, causing the legs to move when Pewku was rolled across a flat surface. Pins on the set offered a place for up to two Matoran to be seated at a time. Pieces of the "Takua and Pewku" set could be combined with pieces from the 8593 Makuta set and the 8594 Jaller & Gukko set to build "Makuta Nui", a form Teridax is said to take to intimidate foes.

Quotes

"Puku's a retired racing crab, used to belong to none other than Onepu himself. Took the title three times with him. She's a bit long in the tooth now, but still fast!"
Midak, Mata Nui Online Game

"Take Puku for a ride! I think she likes you."
— Midak to Takua, Mata Nui Online Game

Trivia

  • Pewku was voiced by Lee Tockar in the Mask of Light.
  • Pewku is at least 1,000 years old, having been mentioned in Mystery of Metru Nui. During the Mask Of Light saga, which takes place a few months after the Bohrok-Kal saga, Pewku is shown as being much larger, which was later identified as a growth common to all Ussals.[17]
  • In BIONICLE: Rahi Beasts, Pewku is erroneously referred to as male.[7]
  • In Mata Nui Online Game, Pewku is used for a "taxi crab" service providing transport between Onu-Koro and Po-Wahi.[8] Although Pewku's role in the game is still considered canonical,[1] Greg Farshtey has repeatedly asserted that the concept of "taxi crabs" is non-canonical.[18][19][20][21]
