Dermis Turtles are turtle-like Rahi.

History

The Dermis Turtle species was created by the Makuta using Viruses and Liquid Protodermis to be one of the Rahi to inhabit the Matoran Universe.[MGttU, p. 1]

A colony of Dermis Turtles was discovered by the Ga-Matoran Macku in Ga-Metru. After the discovery, the population of these Rahi exploded, almost to the point of being pests. They were commonly seen in the lakes and canals of Ga-Metru, particularly fond of Liquid Protodermis pools. Turaga Dume once considered banning them from the city, but convincing arguments from Macku and Nokama changed his mind.[RB, p. 22]

1,001 years ago, the Dermis Turtles fled from the Visorak on Metru Nui to Mata Nui, settling in Ga-Wahi. Ga-Matoran from Ga-Koro often tried to catch them, but with great difficulty. After the Matoran returned to Metru Nui, the Dermis Turtles followed.[citation needed]

After the Great Spirit Robot was critically damaged in the Battle of Bara Magna, many Dermis Turtles emigrated from the Matoran Universe to Spherus Magna.[citation needed]

Abilities and Traits

The hard silver shell of these creatures is almost impervious to attack, and its sharp silver tusks are only used if defense is required. These Rahi are generally peaceful and only fight when attacked. Despite their slow speed, they can be almost impossible to capture, because they know their territory excellently, and one can search for one for days without finding it. These Rahi also have a melodic cry that some residents of Ga-Metru had grown accustomed to and sometimes even enjoyed.

The Dermis Turtle can also detect upcoming changes in weather. When these Rahi hide in their shells for what looks like no particular reason, it means that a storm is coming. Matoran often use the phrase "dermis shell weather" to refer to unpleasant weather conditions.[RB, p. 22]
