Shore Turtles are flying turtle-like Rahi.
History
The Shore Turtle species was created by the Makuta using Viruses and Liquid Protodermis to be one of the Rahi to inhabit the Matoran Universe.[2]
Shore Turtles took up residence on the Southern Continent and Metru Nui. When the region of Voya Nui was propelled to the ocean's surface by the Great Cataclysm, some Shore Turtles took residence on the new island.[3][4] At the same time, the Shore Turtles of Metru Nui fled to the island of Mata Nui, where they dwelled in and around Le-Koro,[5] in Ga-Wahi, and in the Papa Nihu Reef.[6]
During the Great War, Makuta Teridax infected a number of these Shore Turtles. These Shore Turtles attacked Takua during his travels, but Takua evaded them.[6]
The arrival of the Lehvak forced many of the Shore Turtles to move into coastal waters, where they had a more difficult time surviving. Gali and the Ga-Matoran made an extra effort to aid and protect these creatures, along with the other swamp Rahi driven off by the Lehvak.[5]
When the Toa Nuva intentionally unleashed the Bohrok, the Shore Turtles of Mata Nui migrated back to Metru Nui.[7] After the Toa Mahri destroyed the Cord, many Shore Turtles may not have survived Voya Nui's return to its position on the Southern Continent.[8]
After the Mata Nui Robot was critically damaged in the Battle of Bara Magna, the surviving Shore Turtles left the Matoran Universe and immigrated to Spherus Magna.[1]
Abilities and Traits
Shore Turtles are slow and relatively harmless Rahi. Shore Turtles prefer wet environments, especially swamps.[5] They rely on trees for shelter and protection from predatory Rahi.[9] Shore Turtles come in varying colors, such as orange and green. When Shore Turtles are threatened, they are able to retreat into their shells for protection.[10]
Shore Turtles are also capable of flight.[5]

Trivia
- Before the Māori lawsuit against The LEGO Group, the Shore Turtles were called Hoi.[6][5][9] Since the name was not approved by The LEGO Group's legal department, Greg Farshtey could not include the Hoi in any publications after 2002.[11] When they reappeared in Voya Nui Online Game, it was under the new name Shore Turtle.
- Shore Turtles appeared in the v0.006 build of BIONICLE: The Legend of Mata Nui, but were cut later in development.
