"The Onu-Matoran knew that the creatures could not be rushed. Although tame, they were still highly temperamental. If they chose to be stubborn and not harvest the airweed, he would have a lot of explaining to do when he got back to the city."
— Narrator, City of the Lost

Hydruka are stubborn aquatic Rahi, formerly domesticated by the Matoran of Mahri Nui.

History

The hydruka species was created by the Makuta using Viruses and Liquid Protodermis as one of the Rahi to inhabit the Matoran Universe.[5]

When the Great Cataclysm struck and the Pit was destroyed, allowing its occupants to escape into the Black Water of Aqua Magna above, a colony of hydruka migrated to the planet's waters as well.

300 years ago, when the Mahri Nui landmass broke off of Voya Nui and tumbled into the ocean, it collided with the Fields of Air, dislodging the plants' air bubbles and saving the Matoran population and their village. Over the next 300 or so years, the Matoran of Mahri Nui tamed and trained the hydruka to harvest the air bubbles on the airweed. Because this process was so essential to the Matoran's survival, the post of hydruka Guard was developed. After witnessing the hydruka's defense mechanism, launching Solidified Air Bubbles at their enemies, the Matoran were inspired to develop the Air Launcher technology that they used to defend the city.[6][7]

When the Toa Mahri destroyed the Cord and returned Voya Nui to its former position on the Southern Continent, destroying Mahri Nui in the process, the resident hydruka colony remained in the sea.[8]

After a few months, Mata Nui restored Spherus Magna, including Aqua Magna. The hydruka continue to live underwater, relatively unaffected by the restoration.[1]

Abilities and Traits

Hydruka are able to differentiate strands of airweed that contain viable air bubbles from those that do not. Hydruka are known to be red or blue. They defend themselves by firing Solidified Air Bubbles generated by an anatomical element in their tails.[9] At least one blue hydruka, Morak, has a bioluminescent carapace that glows in areas of low light.

Hydruka are notoriously sensitive, irritable, and temperamental. Attempts to rush their harvests would frighten or anger them, and they must be allowed to work at their own pace. The Matoran of Mahri Nui often gave them names to be able to better identify each specimen and keep track of the herds.[6]
