Pit War Tortoises are large, tortoise-like Rahi.

History

The tortoises are an ancient breed of Rahi, who were placed on the Southern Continent. When the Great Cataclysm caused the Voya Nui landmass to dislodge from the Matoran Universe and rocket to the surface of Aqua Magna, several tortoises were carried with it.

When the coastal city of Mahri Nui fell into the ocean, these specimens went down with it, and were mutated by the Pit Mutagen in the Black Water. The tortoises were recruited by the Barraki Carapar into his undersea army. He selected the fiercest tortoise as his personal steed. Carapar was later recaptured by Hydraxon's replica, and the Pit War Tortoises were released from his service.

After the Mata Nui Robot was critically damaged in the Battle of Bara Magna, the surviving Pit War Tortoises within left the Matoran Universe and emigrated to Spherus Magna. The Pit War Tortoises in the Black Waters had their mutations reversed by Mata Nui and were made amphibious.

Abilities and Traits

Pit War Tortoises were originally land-dwelling Rahi, but when Mahri Nui sank into the sea, they became water-dwellers. Mata Nui later made them amphibious. Pit War Tortoises have life spans in excess of 100,000 years.
