Jovan was a Toa of Magnetism and the leader of the Toa team that first retrieved the Kanohi Ignika. He later became the Turaga of Voya Nui.

Biography

Matoran

Jovan began life as a Fa-Matoran.[4] He transformed into a Toa of Magnetism at least 100,000 years ago.[5][6][7]

Toa

Toa Jovan encountered Toa Lesovikk during the latter's travels. Jovan coached the Toa of Air in valuable fighting styles and ideas.[8][9]

Roughly 80,000 years ago,[10] Jovan became the leader of a Toa team that protected an unknown region.[11][12]

Around 79,100 years ago,[13] the Matoran Civil War in Metru Nui imperiled the health of the Great Spirit Mata Nui. To prevent his death, Jovan led his team to the Chamber of Life located under Mount Valmai in the heart of the Southern Continent.[14][15] Along the way, the team navigated traps and guardians protecting the mask, including Umbra.[16] Jovan's team retrieved the Mask of Life from the chamber, and they brought the mask to Karda Nui. There one member of the team donned the Ignika and sacrificed himself to restore Mata Nui's health.[17][18] Another of Jovan's teammates cast a dimensional gate with a Kanohi Olmak, allowing Jovan and his team to escape Karda Nui's Energy Storms.[19] With the team's mission complete, Jovan returned the mask to the Chamber of Life.[20]

Turaga

After the Toa returned the Ignika, they transformed into Turaga, and Jovan stayed behind to take leadership of the village of Voya Nui[2] and watch over the mask.[21] As a Turaga, Jovan educated the Matoran of Voya Nui about their history, and the history of the Matoran Universe, through storytelling. During the Great Cataclysm, when the landmass containing Voya Nui broke off the continent and rocketed to the surface of Aqua Magna, Jovan was killed.[22]

After dying, Jovan was resurrected on the Red Star.[3] However, the return mechanism of the Red Star had malfunctioned, and Jovan was trapped in the Red Star along with other revived beings.[23]

Abilities and Traits

As a Toa of Magnetism, Jovan could create, control, and absorb magnetic energy. This allowed him a wide range of abilities, which included increasing or decreasing the magnetic field in an area, releasing beams of magnetic energy, as well as manipulating metal and other substances through magnetism. These powers were reduced greatly when he became a Turaga.

Jovan has seen the value of knowledge to a warrior, believing it to be more useful than physical weaponry.[8]

Mask and Tools

As a Toa, Jovan wore a Kanohi Kadin, the Mask of Flight, and his Toa Tool was a Magnetic Bolt Launcher.[2] He also carried the earliest known model of the Zamor Launcher, the Zamor of which could nullify the effects of enemy weapons.[24]

When he became a Turaga, his Kadin became a Noble Mask of Flight, and his Magnetic Bolt Launcher transformed into a Badge of Office.

Set Information

The Toa Jovan was revealed in the September-October 2006 issue of LEGO Magazine, with instructions appearing in the magazine's European edition. Instructions were also made available on BIONICLE.com soon afterwards. The Jovan model is made of pieces from 8728 Toa Hahli, 8729 Toa Nuparu, and 8730 Toa Hewkii. His Zamor Launcher features a cartridge piece that gives it a capacity of four yellow-orange Zamor spheres. Toa Jovan was created by Daniel Lipkowitz.[25]
