Garan is an Onu-Matoran of Voya Nui. Known to be brave and smart by his fellow Matoran, Garan led the Matoran Resistance in their fight against the invading Piraka. Garan was the first to discover that the Piraka were not actually Toa as they claimed.

Biography

Early life

Long ago, Garan was injured and sent to the island of Karzahni. There, Karzahni attempted to rebuild them into stronger forms. However, as Karzahni was inept at his duties, he instead accomplished the opposite, rebuilding Garan and many others into weak forms. As compensation, Karzahni gave the Matoran weapons, Garan receiving dual Pulse Bolt Generators. Garan and the other Matoran were sent to Voya Nui to hide Karzahni's failure.[2]

Voya Nui later broke off of the Southern Continent during the Great Cataclysm. This massive earthquake caused the newly-created island to resurface on Aqua Magna and float away, killing Turaga Jovan and many Matoran in the process.[3]

Voya Nui

500 years ago, when a large hurricane approached Voya Nui, Garan and Kazi proposed going east to ride out the storm, gathering the Matoran and warning them of the disaster. They succeeded in reaching safer areas and waited there until the storm ended. They then returned and rebuilt the broken parts of the village.[4]

Garan saw a Toa Canister float ashore and encountered Thok, who claimed to be a Toa. Thok and the five other "Toa" took control of Voya Nui and ordered the Matoran to build a stronghold and drain the Lake of Lava. Garan and several other Matoran became suspicious of the "Toa." After Hakann and Avak defended the Matoran from a creature of Fire and Stone, Garan and Balta followed them and overheard their history as Dark Hunters and Piraka. Garan gathered Balta, Dalu, Kazi, Piruk, and Velika to form the Matoran Resistance. During reconnaissance, they learned that the Piraka had come to find the Kanohi Ignika. Before they could put this information to use, the Piraka attacked the Matoran Cliff Village, using their newly constructed Zamor Spheres to take control of every Matoran outside the team. The team then discovered the Piraka were trying to drain the lava under Mount Valmai. Garan decided to strike back against the Piraka.[3]

Garan directing the Matoran Resistance

The Matoran Resistance gained a small victory when Balta was able to steal one of the Zamor Spheres. However, Thok and Vezok had followed him, and Balta strayed elsewhere to keep them distracted while Garan and the others fled with the Zamor Sphere. While waiting for Balta to return, they encountered the Toa Nuva, whose masks and tools had been stolen by the Piraka. The Matoran, thinking the Toa Nuva might be new allies of the Piraka, attacked them. After Balta intervened with their battle and explained the Toa Nuva were innocent, Garan believed his friend and accepted them as allies. The Toa Nuva and the Matoran Resistance planned to attack the Piraka Stronghold and recover the Toa's lost masks and tools. They managed to get inside, but were defeated by Brutaka.[2]

Garan was interrogated by Vezok in the Chamber of Truth, but the other Matoran rescued him. They later met the Toa Inika and accompanied them when they stormed the stronghold.[5] As the Toa Inika battled the Piraka, the Matoran searched for the Toa Nuva. Garan found a set of tablets revealing that Mahri Nui, a part of Voya Nui that broke off long ago and sank beneath the waves, still existed at the bottom of the ocean. The Matoran found the Toa Nuva imprisoned underneath the stronghold and freed them.[6]

The Matoran then began to rebuild their homes. During this time, Garan became anxious to search underwater for Mahri Nui and his old friends, but was convinced by Axonn to remain on Voya Nui.[7] Later, the Matoran of both Voya Nui and Mahri Nui were led into the Nui Caves below Voya Nui by Axonn. This served as protection after the Toa Mahri cut the Cord keeping Voya Nui afloat and the Matoran population returned to the Southern Continent.[8]

After the defeat of Makuta Teridax, Garan, along with the rest of the universe's people, emigrated from the Matoran Universe onto Spherus Magna.[9][10]

Abilities and Traits

Garan is a very tactical thinker. He believed that the Matoran Resistance could defeat the Piraka because they worked together while the Piraka did not. He is also shown to be very determined, proven when he risked his life in the Chamber of Truth to stop the Piraka.[5] His best friend is Balta.[3]

Like all Onu-Matoran, Garan has decent night vision, allowing him to see fairly well in the dark.
