Set Information

The Kanohi Kaukau was first released in the color transparent blue with the 2001 8533 Gali set. It was also possible to receive a Kanohi Kaukau in 8525 BIONICLE Masks. Transparent green, red, neon-orange (in lieu of brown), blue, white, and black were available in the mask pack. Due to production errors, European packs could also include transparent neon-yellow and medium blue Kanohi Kaukau. The mask bears the code 9-MA on the inside.

In 2002, 8559 BIONICLE Krana was released that contained three Krana and two Kanohi of either silver or gold color. The Kanohi Kaukau was one of six masks available as such. It was also released in transparent blue in 4168039 BIONICLE Clock.

Included in the 8583 Hahli set of 2003 was a transparent blue Kanohi Kaukau.

Trivia

  • The Kaukau was occasionally erroneously referred to as the Mask of Water.[10]
  • In the collectibles entry for Gali's Kanohi Kaukau in BIONICLE Heroes, the Kaukau is referred to as the Mask of Underwater Breathing.
  • Before it was destroyed by the Bohrok, Naho Falls had a large Kanohi Kaukau statue.[11]
  • Despite Kivi and Nuhrii being traditionally featured with a Kaukau in Mata Nui Online Game II: The Final Chronicle, this was caused by a typo in the game code. Kivi and Nuhrii were accidentally programmed to wear a "Kamau," and because the game couldn't recognize this as being the "Komau" which it had a sprite for, the two Matoran were given the game's default mask, the Kaukau. Peter Mack has since confirmed that only Hahli was intended to wear the Kaukau in the game.[12]
  • Kaukau means "swim" in Māori.
