Kaukau Nuva
Kanohi
Title Kanohi Nuva of Water Breathing
Powers Enhanced water breathing
Bearers The Toa Nuva
Pronunciation KOW-KOW NOO-vah[1]

The Kaukau Nuva is the Kanohi Nuva Mask of Water Breathing, one of six masks that may only be wielded by the Toa Nuva. Kaukau Nuva can be formed by dipping a destined Kanohi Kaukau in Energized Protodermis.[2]

Powers

Great and Noble Kaukau Nuva allow their users and select others nearby to breathe water or liquid protodermis exclusively for a longer duration and from greater depths than Kanohi Kaukau.[1][3][4][5][6][7][note 1] It also provides protection against extreme pressures, allowing the wearer to survive even at the deepest point of Aqua Magna's ocean.[10]

As with other Kanohi Nuva, the power can be shared with nearby beings.[1][8] While the mask is activated, the user, or anyone they are sharing its power with, cannot breathe air.[11][12] If applied this way to a target on land, its ability can be used offensively to suffocate enemies.[13][note 2]

Example Usage

In Tales of the Masks, Onua shared a Kaukau Nuva's power with Whenua, allowing the two to breathe in an underwater river as they evaded Kofo-Jaga and Manas.

Notes

  1. Earlier material suggests that the Kaukau Nuva could be used indefinitely.[8][9][disputed; see discussion]
  2. Greg Farshtey has elsewhere indicated that this would not be possible.[14][15][16]
