History of the BIONICLE Universe! was an article in the March-April Brickmaster edition of the LEGO Magazine. The article laid out a timeline of events in the BIONICLE storyline, from the creation of the Matoran Universe to the start of the 2007 storyline.

The epic saga of BIONICLE covers of 100,000 years of exciting events and amazing adventures. Here are some of the major events of its history, from the very beginning to the present day:

100,000+ Years Ago

• Great Beings begin creation of Matoran universe.
• First Matoran villager created.
• Great Beings create Mask of Life and hide it near village of Voya Nui.
• First Toa, a Toa of Water, comes into being.
• First Rahi, sea creatures of tremendous size, come into being.

100,000 Years Ago

• Coming of the Great Spirit Mata Nui.
• Makuta species created.
• First Toa team formed.
• First Toa canisters built by Matoran.
• Toa Mata come into being on Artakha (time approximate).
• Bahrag, queens of the Bohrok swarms, first appear.
• First Bohrok created.

95,000 Years Ago

• Mata Nui creates Barraki.
• Barraki conquer most of known universe.

94,000 Years Ago

• League of Six Kingdoms formed.

80,000 Years Ago

• Six Barraki banished to the Pit by Botar

79,500 Years Ago

• Matoran civil war sparks Great Disruption.

60,000 Years Ago

• Time Slip. Six month period which no one in the universe can recall and about which no historical records exist.
• Order of Mata Nui scatters Matoran of Light, in disguise, to various areas of the universe. Takua is placed on Metru Nui.

7005 Years Ago

• Lhikan becomes a Toa of Fire.

7000 Years Ago

• Toa outpost destroyed by Frostelus; Toa Lhikan survives.
• Makoki Stone stolen from Toa outpost by Vezok.
• Sidorak rejected by Dark Hunters, employed by Brotherhood of Makuta.

3000 Years Ago

• Six-month long Toa-Dark Hunter War in Metru Nui ends in defeat for the Dark Hunters.

1300 Years Ago

• Makuta of Metru Nui launches attack on Great Spirit Mata Nui.
• Toa Hagah rescue Mask of Light from Brotherhood of Makuta, turned into Rahaga.

1001 Years Ago

• Makuta imprisons Metru Nui Turaga Dume and takes his place.
• Mask of Time Created by Vakama.
• Great Spirit Mata Nui succumbs to Makuta's attack, goes into coma.
• Makuta attempts to seize power in Metru Nui.
• Matoran of Metru Nui captured and placed comatose into pods.
• Great Cataclysm destroys much of Metru Nui, rocks entire universe.
• Toa Lhikan becomes Turaga Lhikan and is killed by Makuta.
• Toa Metru defeat and imprison Makuta.
• Cataclysm causes Voya Nui to tear free from its continent and rocket to the surface; Turaga Jovan dies in disaster.
• Visorak horde invades Metru Nui.
• Toa Metru transformed into Toa Hordika by Visorak venom.
• Toa Metru ally with Rahaga and Keetongu to fight Visorak.
• Roodaka defeated by Toa Metru, but not before Makuta is freed.
• Toa Hordika turned back into Toa Metru by Keetongu, transport Matoran to island of Mata Nui.
• Toa Metru awaken Matoran and are transformed into Turaga.
• Pit shattered by undersea quake, Barraki and other inmates escape.

999 Years Ago

• Makuta uses infected masks to take control of Mata Nui Rahi beasts and sets them against Matoran.

900 Years Ago

• Matoran of Voya Nui build small city of Mahri Nui on a newly formed portion of their island.

300 Years Ago

• Mahri Nui breaks off Voya Nui and sinks into the ocean.
• Mahri Nui lands on top of Barraki fortress, crushing it.

One Year Ago

• Takua uses Toa stones to send signal that brings Toa Mata to Mata Nui.

Less Than One Year Ago

• Makuta unleashes Bohrok.
• Toa Mata defeat Bohrok and are transformed into Toa Nuva.
• Takua becomes Takanuva, Toa of Light.
• Metru Nui rediscovered.

One Month Ago

• Piraka seize control of Voya Nui.
• Turaga Dume reveals that Great Spirit Mata Nui is dying.

Less Than One Month Ago

• Toa Nuva arrive on Voya Nui in search of Mask of Life - defeated and captured by Piraka.
• Six Matoran, led by Jaller search for Toa Nuva.
• Matoran reach Voya Nui and are transformed by lightning from red star into Toa Inika.
• Toa Inika ally with Axonn and battle Piraka, Brutaka, Vezon and Fenrakk for possession of Mask of Life.

Currently

• Toa Inika journeying through an underground passageway to reach Mahri Nui.
• Toa Nuva returning to Metru Nui.
• Barraki searching for Mask of Life.
• Mahri Nui on alert for Barraki attacks.
