Set Information
The krana set was released in early 2002. It includes three randomly packaged krana and two randomly packaged Kanohi Masks. The krana can be any of the eight types of krana, and can come in any of the 12 active and dormant colors. The Kanohi are either gold or silver. The set consists of five pieces.
Set 8569 was released in North America, while 8559 was released in other regions. The North American version came in a box, while the international version was packaged in a polybag. The artwork on the polybag packaging could come with six different eye colors, mirroring those of the Toa Mata.
Set 8530 was included in K8563 Bohrok Swarm Kit.
Features
Collectibles
Krana packs contain three randomly packaged krana and two randomly packaged Kanohi. The Kanohi from this set use unique metallic "flip/flop" colors that are slightly translucent, and change hue depending on the angle they're viewed from. This effect had previously been used for the Copper Masks of Victory. All of the krana were available through the Bohrok and Bohrok Va sets.
A total of 12 different possible masks could be found in the set:

Trivia
- No set name appears on the set packaging. LEGO Shop At Home catalogs called the American set 8569 BIONICLE Krana.[1][2] In one UK LEGO catalog, the international set is called 8559 Krana,[3] while a later one calls the set 8559 BIONICLE Krana.[4] On Bricks & Pieces, former name is used.[5]
- What the gold and silver masks in this set represented has varied between different sources:
- The silver Miru, Akaku, and Kaukau were said to each contain all three powers of levitation, x-ray vision, and underwater breathing, while the silver Hau, Pakari, and Kakama each contained all three powers of shielding, strength, and speed. The story team developed this Silver Kanohi concept strictly to market the krana packs; the masks never appear in official story material. Meanwhile, the Golden Masks were those worn by the Toa Mata in the story, containing all six powers of their great masks.[6]
- On the 2003 BIONICLE.com website and in the BIONICLE: Collector's Sticker Book, the silver masks are said to represent the Kanohi Rua, while the golden masks represent the Kanohi Aki.[7][8]
- In BIONICLE Heroes, the silver masks are described as "Protodermic Kanohi", representing masks that are either not worn, or worn by a Toa drained of their elemental energies. The same description is given for the silver Kanohi Nuva from 8599 Krana-Kal and 8600 Krana-Kal. The game also presented the interpretation of the Golden Masks being the ones worn by the Toa Mata.
