Synopsis

A villager named Bingzak, whose nearby village in the Region of Jungle has been destroyed by Skull Spiders and was the only one who escaped from them, finds Nilkuu, the Protector of Stone, lost in the region and guides him to the Temple of Time, where the other five Protectors - Narmoto, Izotor, Kivoda, Vizuna, and Korgot - have gathered. The six Protectors then draw forth the Mask of Time and recite the Prophecy of Heroes to summon legendary help for their beleaguered island. Their task done, Bingzak guides Nilkuu home only to find the village under attack by Skull Spiders, whom the Protector of Stone helps to fight off.

The help soon arrives, as the six Toa - Tahu, Kopaka, Lewa, Gali, Pohatu, and Onua - arrive on the island, and are led by the Protectors to their Golden Masks of Power. Upon receiving them, each Toa hears the voice of Ekimu, and they make their way to the City of the Mask Makers in order to free him, with the Protectors staying behind. Their first meeting is a rocky one due to their clashing personalities, and it is only the menace of the Lord of Skull Spiders that persuades them to finally work together as one. They thus defeat the Lord before making their way into the ruined city.

Soon after entering the city, the heroes are attacked by a band of Skull Warriors, and only narrowly manage to defeat them. Lewa then splits away from the rest of the group to check out a nearby arena, only to lose his mask to the Skull Slicer. The other Toa manage to defeat the Skull Slicer by following Lewa's advice about the arena game, only for the arena collapse beneath them. Buried in an underground cavern, they briefly despair, but are then reminded of the Protectors and the Okotans they have been called upon to protect. Lewa then detects a breeze, which the Toa follow to escape the cavern, only to find themselves in a graveyard. A pair of Skull Scorpios attack, and after a brief battle, Lewa succeeds in bringing a nearby statue down on top of them.

The six Toa then enter the tomb of Ekimu and awaken the Mask Maker with their powers, only to find that they may already be too late. Hurrying to Ekimu's forge, they run into the mighty Skull Basher, who steals Onua's mask. The other Toa manage to defeat him by working together, and then confront the Skull Grinder, who is preparing to destroy Ekimu's Mask of Creation in the Mask Maker's own forge. Kulta then dons the Mask in order to use its power against the Toa, whom Ekimu instructs to hold the Skull Grinder off while he searches among the materials in the forge. Outmatched and quickly stripped of their masks, the Toa are nonetheless successful in giving Ekimu time to rebuild his Hammer of Power, which he uses to defeat Kulta and reclaim his Mask. He then repairs the masks of the Toa and congratulates them as true heroes. The heroes sense that Makuta is still out there, and feel that they must find and stop him.
