Biography
The Lord of Earth was a female warrior of the Earth Tribe who had a role in the tribe's government.[3][4] She was approached by the Great Beings to take part in an experiment. She was fused with her element, becoming one with Earth, and was made ruler of the Earth Tribe.[2]
Due to their connection with the subterranean world, the Earth Tribe knew of Energized Protodermis before it leaked on to the surface of Spherus Magna. The Lord of Earth contemplated keeping the substance for herself and her tribe, but she realized it would make her tribe a target. However, she still wanted control of the resource. Assuming Energized Protodermis would come to the surface at some point, she sat back and waited for someone else to discover it. Once the Ice Tribe found a spring of Energized Protodermis,[5] the Lord of Earth and her tribe subtly encouraged the Ice Agori to seize control of the resource, knowing it would provoke conflict.[6]
This resulted in the start of the Core War. The Lord of Earth chose to abstain from the war, and the Earth Tribe instead professed a wish for peace while secretly undermining efforts to end the conflict. The Lord of Earth planned to wait until the other tribes had exhausted themselves in battle so she could easily seize the well. However, before she could make her move, the Shattering ended the Core War.[6]
The Lord of Earth was stranded on Bota Magna,[7][8] along with most of the surviving Earth Tribe.[6]
After the Shattering, it became common knowledge that the Earth Tribe was responsible for the Core War. As a consequence, the Lord of Earth and her tribe were ostracized from society.[6]
Over 100,000 years later, Mata Nui used the powers of the Prototype Robot and the Mata Nui Robot to bring the three fragments of Spherus Magna together, restoring the planet.[9] The Lord of Earth now resides on the restored planet.[10] She plans to foment distrust among the other tribes to prevent a worldwide alliance against her tribe.[11]
Abilities and Traits
The Element Lord of Earth possesses the power of Earth, and is intertwined with the element itself.[12] Like the other members of her tribe, she is extremely tied to nature.[13][14] Unlike the other Element Lords, she is not aggressive and territorial. Instead, she is subtle, arranging for her enemies to weaken one another as opposed to challenging them in battle herself.[15]
Tools
The Lord of Earth was given armor and tools that reflect her nature.[16]
Trivia
- Initially, "Earth Tribe" was a placeholder name for the Iron Tribe, as used in one of Raanu's lines in Glatorian Arena[17] and Greg Farshtey's treatment for the cancelled fifth BIONICLE movie.[18] Farshtey had previously denied the existence of other tribes besides the primary six and Iron.[19][20][21][22][23] In 2014, a user again asked whether there were other tribes, to which Farshtey said there were.[24] Several users then followed up with questions about the Earth Tribe mentioned in his movie treatment, to which Farshtey confirmed that the Earth Tribe exists as an eighth tribe on Spherus Magna.[25][26] Though questions and discrepancies started to emerge, such as whether the Earth Tribe fought in the Core War[27][13] and why they were never mentioned in the story previously. In 2017, Farshtey posted a backstory for the Earth Tribe and Lord of Earth to explain these apparent contradictions, that they were blamed for the Core War and thus banished from society and never discussed.[28] However, this backstory contradicts established canon. In Chapter 3 of The Crossing, Tarduk says the Great Beings were blamed for the Core War, and so no one discussed them, despite the Great Beings being mentioned by several characters throughout the story. The Earth Tribe or Lord of Earth are not mentioned in places where they ought to be, such as BIONICLE: Mata Nui's Guide to Bara Magna or "All Our Sins Remembered." Farshtey has stated on several occasions that it was not his intention to retcon previous canon.[29][30][31] Because of this, the canonical status of the Element Lord of Earth is disputed.
