Toa Mangai

Fine. I'll do it myself.

Conclusion

Toa Mangai

4,000 years ago,[note 1] when the Kanohi Dragon was unleashed on Metru Nui by Reidak, Vezok, and Avak, Turaga Dume sent out Vahki as a call for help.[4] Toa Lhikan saw fit to summon ten other Toa[5] - including, but not exclusively, his own team[6][7] - to Metru Nui. The Toa arrived riding on Vahki.[8] Over the course of a month-long battle, the Toa and Kanohi Dragon clashed many times, with both resting in-between fights.[9][10] The eleven Toa eventually subdued the Kanohi Dragon[1][11][12][13][14][15][2] by keeping it cold and frozen through the combined efforts of the team's Toa of Ice, rendering it unconscious.[16][17][18]

Lhikan and half a dozen of the Toa oversaw the days-long transportation of the Kanohi Dragon to Xia, while Nidhiki and the others remained behind to secure the city. The Vortixx Roodaka received the dragon on Xia. After their return, Lhikan and a handful of the other Toa elected to remain in the city to protect it.[15][16][3][19]

According to Vakama, the Toa fought a great battle against the creature and drove it away long ago. Since then, the Kanohi Dragon has not been seen for generations.[12]

The team was named Toa Mangai by the Matoran.[20][21] Lhikan became the leader of the team.[22][23]

Over the centuries, some members of the team got bored and left for other islands and adventures, whilst others stayed.[22][6][15][24] Additionally, most members of the Toa Mangai were frequently on missions outside the city, due to the limited number of threats to Metru Nui.[25] During the events of The Many Deaths of Toa Tuyet (set 3,500 years ago,[26] in-between the Kanohi Dragon's defeat and the Toa Dark-Hunter war[27]), Lhikan, Tuyet, and Nidhiki were the only Toa in Metru Nui as the others were on missions or had left the city.[28][29][19] When the Toa-Dark Hunter war started, there was around seven Toa in Metru Nui.[30] At the time of the research project involving the First Rahi, Lhikan was the only Toa in Metru Nui, as the other members of the team were on missions outside the city, from which they later returned.[31][32]

18 months before the Great Cataclysm, Makuta Teridax took the place of Turaga Dume.[33][34] Turaga Dume (Makuta Teridax in disguise) sent the all of the Toa Mangai still in the city on missions to close down all of the sea gates in the seaways leading to Metru Nui, which they did.[35] No explanation was given by the false Turaga for these strange missions.[15] Some of these missions occured more recently than others.[33] During these missions, the Toa disappeared, with no one knowing what happened to them.[36][22][37][38][39][24][40] The Makuta had hired the Dark Hunter "Eliminator" to track down and defeat the Toa,[41] something he was very successful at.[42] However, Eliminator was not sent after every Toa since they were too scattered.[43] Because of the way Eliminator kills, his victims were not revived by the Red Star,[44] which would most likely also not teleport their bodies.[45] Some Toa trapped on the other side may have wandered until they found another land, where they took on Toa duties.[46] Some of the Toa may also have encountered the Rahi Nui.[47] While all the Toa Mangai are either dead or have disappeared,[48] and though most of them were killed,[49] it is possible, though unlikely, that some members of the team may still be alive.[50][51][52][note 2] Due to the frequence of these Toa going on missions, their disappearance was not thought of as unusual.[32]

This left Lhikan as the last member of the team in Metru Nui.[55]

The Toa Mangai never reached the level of recognition that the Toa Hagah had.[56]

It's possible the Toa Mangai were not very public, acting more like a black ops team, explaining why the Matoran not very familiar with them.[57] Even so, the defeat of the Kanohi Dragon, or their contribution in the Toa-Dark Hunter war, would have been enough to earn Lhikan the statue in the Coliseum.[58][59] If they were a black ops team, they only started doing that after defeating the Kanohi Dragon.[60] However, this idea was only a suggestion.[61][62]

Lhikan

Lhikan was a Matoran in an unknown land, which was not Metru Nui,[63][64][65][15] the fortress island where he'd later be stationed,[66] or the Tren Krom Peninsula.[67][68][note 3] 17,500 years ago he was rescued by Toa Dume.[19] He became a Toa 7,005 years ago,[19] something that Dume - by then a Turaga - had a hand in.[69][70]

As a novice Toa, Lhikan was part of the group of Toa that guarded the Makoki Stone. The Frostelus attacked the fortress, he was ordered by the team leader to flee with the Makoki stone, and report what had happened. However, the Makoki stone had already been stolen by Dark Hunters. Due to him fleeing, he became the lone survivor of the attack.[71][72][3][28][19] After this, he swore to never run away from anything again.[28]

He was later part of a team which may have consisted of more or less than six Toa, including Nidhiki, prior to coming to Metru Nui.[73][74] Lhikan had also known Tuyet for thousands of years, during which they travelled together, and once, almost died together.[28]

4,000 years ago,[note 1] in response to Turaga Dume's call for aid, Lhikan gathered ten other Toa,[5] including his own team[6][7] to fight the Kanohi Dragon. He then oversaw the dragon being transported to Xia.[16][3] After coming to Metru Nui, Lhikan became the leader of these Toa,[22][75] dubbed the Toa Mangai.[20]

Lhikan did not like to speak of his past,[19] and did not disclose why he came to Metru Nui.[65] He did not care to tell the tale of the Kanohi Dragon, indicating it must have been an awful battle.[12]

During the Toa-Dark Hunter war, Lhikan was the leader of the Toa side.[76] He was chosen as the leader of the army due to his skill and experience, as well as his familiarity with Metru Nui.[77]

Although he was not native to the city, he was deeply loyal to the city and its population.[15] Due to Lhikan's dedication to keeping Metru Nui safe, Turaga Dume did not reveal the First Rahi research project to him, believing that he may try to shut it down.[31] Matoran of every metru are familiar with and looked up to Lhikan.[78][79][65] A statue of Lhikan was erected at the Akilini field in the Coliseum[80] due to him being the leader of his team.[81] It was likely built by Po-Matoran in honor of something he did for Po-Metru.[81]

As a result of the other Toa frequently being on missions outside the city, Toa Lhikan has been the lone protector of Metru Nui for years.[82][65] Due to the limited number of threats to the city, Lhikan primarily aided the Vahki in the capture of dangerous Rahi.[65][83]

When the other Toa Mangai were sent to on missions leading to their disappearance, Lhikan remained in the city. Instead, the Makuta hired Nidhiki and Krekka to hunt him down.[84][38][15] Any messages he sent for help were intercepted.[85]

As a Matoran, he was likely familiar with a Toa with similiar armor to that he wore as a Toa.[86] His metallic armor was not something he was rewarded with.[87][88]

Lhikan was close enough with Nidhiki to be able to recognize him despite his mutations.[89][90] However, Lhikan was closer with Tuyet than he was with Nidhiki.[91]

Lhikan may have possessed a Toa Disk which he has used up.[92]

Lhikan likely never dealt with the Brotherhood of Makuta directly,[93] and he and his team never encountered the Toa Hagah (or Rahaga), or Sidorak.[94][note 4]

It was Lhikan's destiny to save Metru Nui, which he did by creating the Toa Metru.[95][96]

Nidhiki

Nidhiki was once a Matoran,[97] and later transformed into a Toa of Air.[98][99][100] Nidhiki was from the Tren Krom Peninsula.[101][note 3] It was a dangerous place for a Toa, as it was not welcoming of heroes.[103][104]

Nidhiki has a past with Lhikan,[80][105] as Toa.[106] Nidhiki was one of the Toa on Lhikan's team before coming to Metru Nui,[74] and one of the eleven Toa that fought the Kanohi Dragon.[107][108] While the Kanohi Dragon was transported to Xia, Nidhiki remained in Metru Nui.[2] Turaga Dume was familiar with Nidhiki prior his arrival in Metru Nui.[2]

Nidhiki was one of the Toa that elected to stay in Metru Nui following the battle as Toa Mangai.[15][108] During his time in Metru Nui, he occassionally ventured to other islands.[108] He was always looking out for himself more than he did others,[91] and eventually began to feel dissatisfied with his role in the city.[108] During his time as a Toa, he did not associate with Matoran[89] and none of the future Toa Metru did knew him.[109]

He was later one of the Toa who fought in the Toa-Dark Hunter war.[110][111] However, believing the Dark Hunters would win regardless,[112] he betrayed the city, and left with the Dark Hunters.[113][114][69]}[103]

Upon returning to Metru Nui as a Dark Hunter, Nidhiki used Ahkmou minimize how many knew he was involved. However, due this hatred for Lhikan, he disregarded this and let Vakama spot him. Additionally, Ahkmou's incompetence eventually forced him to get more involved.[115]

Nidhiki's armor was not dual-colored like Lhikan's.[67] His armor probably resembled the Toa Metru's, much like Lhikan's.[116]

It's likely that Nidhiki is self-loathing.[117]

Nidhiki's destiny was to betray the Toa, join the Dark Hunters, and be mutated and die as a result.[118][49] He never tried getting revenge on the Shadowed One for his mutations.[119]

Tuyet

Tuyet was one of the two Toa Mangai of Water.[28]

Tuyet has known Lhikan for thousands of years, during which they travelled together, and once, almost died together.[28] Tuyet claimed to have been on her home island prior to being summoned to fight the Kanohi Dragon.[28]

3,500 years ago,[26] Tuyet betrayed the Toa Mangai.[28]

Tuyet's destiny was her fate.[120] She has not achieved her destiny yet.[49] Its unknown if her crimes were made public knowledge.[121]

Naho

Naho was one of the two Toa of Water on the team.[122][123] During the start of Toa-Dark Hunter war, she managed to slip behind enemy lines and summon reinforcements.[124][125]

During The Many Deaths of Toa Tuyet, Naho was alive, though she was outside of the city at the time.[29]

Naho was not one of the two Toa who travelled with Kodan at the time of his death.[126] She was probably killed by Eliminator.[127] The Naho Falls were named by the Turaga of Mata Nui after Toa Naho.[128]

Members

In addition to Lhikan, Nidhiki, Tuyet and Naho, the Toa team consisted of four Toa of Ice,[16] a Toa of Earth,[129] a Toa of the Green,[130] and probably a Toa of Stone.[131]

The four Toa Mangai of Ice wore the Calix, Mask of Conjuring, Kaukau,[132] and Rode.[133] There were four Toa of Ice as that's how many that responded to the call for help.[134] All four of these were part of the ten Toa summoned by Lhikan.[135] When the Toa-Dark Hunter war started, some of the Toa of Ice were in Metru Nui, some were not.[30]

Originally, there were two Toa of Water on the Toa Mangai,[122] one of which was Tuyet[28] and the other was Naho.[123] At the time of the Toa-Dark Hunter war, there was only one Toa of Water on the Toa Mangai[124] - Naho.[125]

The Toa of Earth was the bearer of the Kakama found by the Shadowed One near the gate to Metru Nui which Krekka and Nidhiki had torn open.[132] The Shadowed One speculated it belonged to one of the Toa of Metru Nui, who'd sought to close the gate. The Toa had succeeded but only after a great battle, and then perished to his injuries, leaving only the mask behind.[35]

The Toa Mangai of the Green wore a Mask of Healing.[136] He likely lived in Ga-Metru.[137] By the time the Morbuzakh was planted, this Toa was no longer active in the city.[138][139] He was once a Matoran.[140]

The members of the team were, like Lhikan, not from Metru Nui originally.[141] None of the Toa Mangai were from Lhikan's homeland,[142] but some of them may have shared a homeland.[143][144] The Toa did not belong to other teams before the Toa Mangai.[145]

It can be assumed the other Toa Mangai had armor like Lhikan's.[146]

Kodan

Kodan was a Po-Matoran and the best-known chronicler of Metru Nui, and more specifically, the chronicler of the Toa Mangai. His first experience as chronicler was recording the defeat of the Kanohi Dragon by Lhikan and his team of Toa.[13][147] He later traveled with two members of the team (neither of which were Naho[126]) on one of their missions assigned by Turaga Dume (Makuta in disguise), but he nor they returned,[13][147] and his Chronicler's Staff was lost with him.[148] Kodan and the two Toa were killed by Eliminator.[43] The false Turaga never appointed a new chronicler after that.[13]

Other

  • The introduction in Legends of Metru Nui is referring to the Toa Mangai.[80][149][150]
  • Toa Dume did not protect Tuyet's homeland, nor the fortress island at which the Makoki stone was kept.[151]
  • There have been Toa in Metru Nui long before the Toa Mangai. However, Dume's team was not in Metru Nui.[152]
  • Matoran of Metru Nui know what Toa look like as they were familiar with Lhikan. However, despite this, one Ga-Matoran did not trust that the Toa Metru were Toa.[78][79]
  • A Toa Metru is a Toa of Metru Nui. Even though Lhikan protected the city, he was not from Metru Nui, so he is only an honorary Toa Metru at-best.[153][154]
  • While there are other Toa than Nidhiki among the Dark Hunters, no other Toa defected during the Toa-Dark Hunter war.[155]
  • The Toa Hagah were not present for the Toa-Dark Hunter war, and never saw Metru Nui before becoming Rahaga.[111]
  • All Toa refer to each other as brothers and sisters, even if they are not on the same team.[156]
  • Had the Toa-Dark Hunter war gone on, Dume may have ordered the city leveled rather than risk losing it.[157] This matches with his statement in Legacy of Evil.[8]
  • Makuta Teridax knew of Tuyet because he was assigned to oversee Metru Nui.[158]
  • Some locations on Mata Nui may have been named after the Toa Mangai[159] or other Toa.[160] However, Lake Kanae, the Kumu Islets, the Motara Desert, Leva Bay, and Tiro Canyon were not named after characters.[161] Instead, these words may simply translate to things such as "Swamp" or "Desert".[162] Addtionally, the Three Brother's Bridge does not refer to the Mangai[163] and the sports on Mata Nui were not named after the Mangai.[164]
  • The story of Lhikan fighting the Kanohi Dragon was Greg's idea.[165]

Notes

  1. 1.0 1.1 This was originally stated to have happened (according to legend) 2,000 years ago.[1] However, it was later established in Legacy of Evil to have happened 4,000 yeas ago,[2] which was also reiterated in BIONICLE Encyclopedia Updated.[3]
  2. Greg would later state all of the Toa Mangai were killed[53] by Eliminator.[54] This contradicts an earlier answer stating Eliminator did not kill all of them.[43] This does, however, not rule out other causes of death.
  3. 3.0 3.1 It was originally said that Nidhiki was not from the Tren Krom Peninsula, on the basis that he was from an island.[102] However, Birth of a Dark Hunter never states him to be from an island.
  4. While it was stated Lhikan and his team never encountered Roodaka,[94] he did so in Legacy of Evil.[16]

Little is known about Toa Lhikan's past. It is said he came to Metru Nui from some other place, for reasons that he declines to discuss. He has served as the lone protector of the city of many, many years, and Matoran in every metru look up to him. With few threats to Metru Nui, Lhikan has largely kept busy helping the Vahki to capture particularly dangerous Rahi.[65]

From things Toa Lhikan said to him[Nidhiki], it would appear the two must have known each other sometime in the past.[105]

BIONICLE 2: Legends of Metru Nui (Website)

Lhikan, Toa of Fire Little is know about Lhikan'ss past. He came to Metru Nui from elsewhere, in the company of other Toa. Over the centuries, his friends fell in battle or else went out on missions and never returned, until only he remained. Life in Metru Nui was largely peaceful, but lately he has begun to suspect something is amiss. Matoran are disappearing and the Vahki have shown little interest in trying to find them. Worse, he has heard rumors that old enemies of his may have arrived in Metru Nui. He has decided that he needs to be prepared, just in case the worst happens.

Nidhiki This Dark Hunter traveled to Metru Nui from elsewhere, with one thing on his mind: capturing Toa. He was particularly happy to be running into his old "friend," Lhikan, again - they have unfinished business to discuss.

1 October 2004 - BIONICLE Adventures 5: Voyage of Fear

Vakama started at the mention of the Toa’s name. Lhikan had been a hero of Metru Nui when these six had been simple Matoran. Betrayed and ambushed, he had sacrificed his Toa power to bring six Toa Metru into being. As a Turaga, he had aided them in their fight against Makuta. But it was his final memory of Lhikan which pained him the most — the noble figure taking a bolt of darkness meant for Vakama and perishing.[166]
Long before the Morbuzakh, long before the actions of the false Dume, long before the coming of the Toa Metru, the city of Metru Nui was a place of peace and learning. Outside of the city-wide akilini tournaments in the Coliseum, the only real excitement was when Rahi beasts would appear on the outskirts. Then Toa Lhikan and the Vahki squads would go into action, driving off the creatures or trapping them for display in the Archives.[83]
"What about Toa Lhikan?" asked Whenua. "Surely he must know."
"No," answered Dume. "Lhikan's first duty is to the safety of the city, and he cannot see beyond that. But the advancement of Matoran sicence requires risk. I have been convinced that there is something that can be learned from these . . . monsters. Do not prove me wrong."[31]

19 October 2004 - BIONICLE 2: Legends of Metru Nui

Toa Lhikan, the Toa of Fire, is the last of the great Toa that defended Metru Nui against every threat. He recently disappeared under mysterious circumstances, leaving Metru Nui unprotected! He wears the Kanohi Hau, the Great Mask of Shielding.

7 June 2005 - BIONICLE: Rahi Beasts

Rahaga Pouks says: "I asked Vakama about this beast. The Kanohi Dragon has evidently not been seen for generations. According to Vakama, Toa Lhikan and ten of his comrades fought a great battle against the creature and drove it away long, long ago. More than that, he did not know, and Lhikan never cared to share more of the tale. Such silence says a lot about what an awful battle it must have been."[12]

It first appeared in Metru Nui some 18 months prior to the Great Cataclysm, roughly the same time Makuta assumed the identity of Turaga Dume.[34]

12 September 2005 - BIONICLE: Encyclopedia (and Birth of a Dark Hunter)

The best-known Chronicler in METRU NUI was a PO-MATORAN named KODAN. His first experience was recording the defeat of the KANOHI DRAGON by Toa LHIKAN and 10 other Toa. He later traveled with some of Lhikan's fellow Toa on one of their missions, but neither he nor they ever returned. TURAGA DUME chose not to appoint a new Chronicler. No one knew at the time that the true Dume had been replaced by MAKUTA in disguise.[13]

The Original Chronicler's staff was lost when KODAN disappeared.[148]

Early in the reign of DUME, the Shadowed One wished to establish a base in the city, but Dume refused. This resulted in a huge struggle between the Toa, led by LHIKAN, and the Dark Hunters. During this conflict, Toa Nidhiki attempted to betray the city and eventually defect to the enemy.[114][69]

Dume's history as a TOA has not yet been revealed, although it is believed that he had some hand in LHIKAN's becoming a Toa.[69]

According to legend, TOA LHIKAN and ten of his comrades fought a great battle and defeated the monster.[14]

A PO-MATORAN in METRU NUI and the CHRONICLER for TOA LHIKAN's team. Kodan began his career as chronicler when Lhikan arrived in the city with ten other Toa to fight the KANOHI DRAGON. Kodan continued to fill this role for centuries. He vanished along with two Toa on a mission for TURAGA DUME (actually MAKUTA in disguise).[147]

Lhikan first came to Metru Nui centuries ago along with ten other Toa in response to a call for help from Turaga DUME. The Toa encountered and defeated a KANOHI DRAGON. Afterward, Lhikan, Toa NIDHIKI, and a handful of the other heroes elected to remain in the city as its protectors.
[DH War]
Over time, some of the Toa left the city for other islands and more adventure. More recently, Turaga Dume ordered a number of the Toa to close off all the seaways that led from Metru Nui to other lands. No explaination was given for this strange order. Lhikan remained behind in the city while his companions left to carry out their missions. None of them ever returned.[15]

Although he was not native to Metru Nui, he was deeply loyal to his adpoted city and its population.[15]

He ordered many of the city's Toa to go on dangerous missions, from which they did not return.[37]

During much of its existence, Metru Nui was ruled by TURAGA DUME, protected by TOA LHIKAN and other Toa, and guarded by the VAHKI. Metru Nui was once the site of a major conflict between the Toa and the DARK HUNTERS.
When MAKUTA impersonated Dume, he sent all the Toa but Lhikan out of the city and invited the Dark Hunters in to capture the remaining hero.[38]

Nidhiki was one of ten Toa summoned by LHIKAN to help defend Metru Nui against the KANOHI DRAGON. He remained in the city for many years afterward, helping to defend it against RAHI and occassionally venturing to other islands. But over time, he began to feel dissatisfied with his role.[108]

Nidhiki wears a Mask of Stealth.[167]

13 September 2005 - BIONICLE Adventures 10: Time Trap

Sentrakh steered the boat unerringly toward the gateway that led to the Metru Nui Sea. It had been a long journey, but neither he nor the Shadowed One had slept. Having lived among potential enemies far too long to take chances, the Shadowed One rarely closed his eyes except behind locked doors. Sentrakh had no need for sleep or much of anything else beyond his duty.
Virtually all of the sea gates that led from Metru Nui to other lands had been closed by order of Makuta some time ago. Only this one remained open, by virtue of someone, or something, having torn the metal wide open. The Shadowed One guessed this was the work of Krekka, as he and Nidhiki made their way to Metru Nui.
As the boat sailed through the portal, a dull gray object caught the eye of the Dark Hunter leader. He ordered Sentrakh to halt and stepped out onto the narrow rock ledge that bordered the gate. A closer look confirmed his suspicion: This was a Kanohi Mask of Power he had spotted, a Mask of Speed, to be precise.
“Do you know what this is?” he asked Sentrakh. “A Kanohi mask — one of the most valuable possessions of a Toa. It no doubt belonged to some brave hero who ventured here from Metru Nui, looking to close this gate, thinking he was doing what was best for his city. He succeeded, but only after a great battle, and finally succumbed to his injuries. Only his mask was left behind.”
The Shadowed One turned to look at his guardian, who was still staring straight ahead. “Did he find a hero’s grave in these waters, do you think?” The Dark Hunter idly kicked the mask into the sea, watching it disappear beneath the waves. “Or just a final resting place in the mud for a fool?”

1 June 2006 - BIONICLE: Dark Hunters

Eliminator was the third of three Dark Hunters hired by Makuta during his failed attempt to seize control of Metru Nui and its Matoran population. While the other two were in the city acting as close support, Eliminator's job was to track down and defeat the city's Toa guardians. Makuta, disguised as the city elder, had order them on missions outside of Metru Nui, making them easy targets for my Dark Hunter.[41]

30 August 2006 - BIONICLE Legends 4: Legacy of Evil

All but one of the Toa in the tower that day met his end at the claws of the Frostelus. The lone survivor, a relatively new and inexperienced master of fire named Lhikan, was ordered by his team leader to flee with the Makoki stone. But when Lhikan went to get the stone, it was gone.
He would search for some years afterward for the tablet, despite the fact that he did not know the true significance of it. Nor did he ever learn just who it was that dared to steal from a Toa tower.[71]

4k years ago, Reidak, Vezok, and Avak freed the Kanohi Dragon, which was frozen in a sealed sea cavern. They attempted to convince Turaga Dume to allow the Dark Hunters to stop the beast, however Lhikan, Nidhiki, and nine other Toa arrived on Vahki instead. The Toa battled the Kanohi Dragon for a month, until it was defeated with the combined efforts of four Toa of Ice. Lhikan and half a dozen of the Toa brought the dragon to Xia, while Nidhiki and the rest remained behind to secure the city.[2]

Vezok, Reidak, and Avak landed the boat on a secluded part of the Le-Metru coastline. Vezok pointed to the squads of Vahki soaring toward Ta-Metru. “I guess they figured out something’s wrong. Well, we’ll wait until dark. Let them sweat a little.”
Avak was looking around for some way to amuse himself until nightfall when he spotted a dozen Vahki heading in their direction. He was bracing for battle when they flew by overhead, traveling out over the ocean and away from the city.
Now where are they going? he wondered.[4]

---

The Dark Hunters turned to see two Toa - one emerald in color, one red and gold - standing in the window. Nine other Toa hovered on Vahki in the night sky behind them.
“Toa Lhikan!” exclaimed Dume. “Toa Nidhiki!”
“You didn’t tell us you had Dark Hunters visiting,” said Nidhiki, Toa of Air. “Here I thought we would be fighting only higher forms of life.”
“We got your message,” said Toa Lhikan, master of fire. “Are these three responsible for the trouble here?”[168]

---

Lhikan, Nidhiki, and their team of Toa waged a month-long battle with the Kanohi Dragon. Scores of buildings were destroyed, entire sections of Ta-Metru were rendered uninhabitable, and far too many innocent Matoran met their deaths. When the beast was finally defeated (thanks in no small part to the combined efforts of four Toa of Ice), it was not a victory that filled the Toa’s hearts with pride, just relief.
While the fate of the dragon was being debated, Nidhiki took it upon himself to try and kill it. But the armored scales that had deflected so many blows during the fight prevented him from ending the creature’s life. It was finally decided to transport the dragon to another island whose rulers had agreed to give it refuge and keep it away from other lands. Lhikan and a half dozen of his team agreed to man the barge carrying the dragon, while Nidhiki and the rest stayed behind to secure the city.
“The Dark Hunters won’t take no for an answer,” Lhikan reminded Dume. “They’ll be back. So will we.”
It was a journey of many days to the Kanohi Dragon’s new home. Once there, the barge sailed up to a dock made of black, twisted metal. The look and feel of the island disturbed the Toa. Though parts seemed tropical and wild, much of the rest of it was covered with dull iron buildings that spewed foul smoke into the sky. One of the team insisted he had seen factory doors open and what looked like an array of war machines assembled inside.[16]

---

Still, the plan had seemed to be working. A couple of hundred Dark Hunters stormed Metru Nui in the dead of night, taking the Vahki and Lhikan’s team of Toa completely by surprise. While the Matoran took cover, they seized control of most of the city. The Toa and Turaga Dume were forced to take refuge inside the Coliseum. Victory seemed only days away.
Then everything went wrong. The Toa of Water managed to slip through the Dark Hunter lines and swim the ocean. At the first island she came to, she dragged herself to the Turaga and begged for help for Metru Nui. The result was that close to one hundred Toa descended on the city and turned what should have been a quick fight into a protracted siege. Toa and Dark Hunters clashed in metru-to-metru, street-to-street fighting that lasted months.

11 June 2007 - The Many Deaths of Toa Tuyet

Introduction of Tuyet.

"All right," said Lhikan. "With the other Toa away on missions, there's just the three of us to protect the city. So take care and keep a careful eye out. Someone killed that Matoran and we can't let it happen again."

---

Tuyet nodded. "Yes, but its makers realized the risks. They made only one and vowed to destroy that one. But before they could do it, it was stolen – no one knows by who. It was passed from hand to hand for millennia, no one ever realizing what it was or could do … just that it was powerful, and so valuable. Finally, at some point in the recent past, it ended up on my home island … or so they say."
"What does this have to do with two dead Matoran and tablets bearing your name?" asked Lhikan.
"Shortly after I left home to help you and the others fight the Kanohi Dragon here, a team of Dark Hunters invaded my homeland. They were looking for the Nui Stone. When they couldn't find it, they assumed I had taken it with me for safekeeping."
Tuyet looked down at the ground. A long moment passed before she spoke. "If I do … I'll put you in danger. The best thing might be for me to just leave Metru Nui. Once I go, this will stop."
Lhikan reached out and took her hand. "A long time ago, I was stationed in a Toa tower that was under attack by Frostelus. Our team leader ordered me to abandon my post so there would be a survivor to warn others of what had happened. I was young, new to being a Toa, so I agreed. I lived; they died. And I swore after that I would never run from anything, ever again. We're Toa, Tuyet – and Toa don't run."

---

Lhikan nodded. "There's been another death. Tuyet, I know you don't like Nidhiki, so I left him behind. You and I have been friends for thousands of years. We've traveled together, fought together, and once almost died together. If you know something about what's going on, you have to tell me."

7 September 2007 - BIONICLE: Encyclopedia Updated

(Unless specified otherwise, info remains the same as it is in BE)

Along with NIDHIKI and KREKKA, he was dispatched to METRU NUI to help MAKUTA in his efforts to seize control of the city. Eliminator's task was to track down and destroy the Toa guardians of Metru Nui, which he did very successfully.[42]

Little is known of Lhikan's past history. As a relatively new Toa, he helped man a Toa tower that contained the MAKOKI STONES. He was the lone defender to escape an attack of the FROSTELUS. He first came to Metru Nui 4,000 years ago along with 10 other Toa in response to a call for help from Turaga DUME. The Toa encountered and defeated a KANOHI DRAGON. Lhikan personally saw the dragon delivered to the island of XIA. Afterwards, he, Toa NIDHIKI, and a handful of the other heroes elected to remain in the city as its protectors.[3]

Centuries later, Makuta reappeared, this time posing as Turaga DUME and ruling METRU NUI. Reduced in stature due to his earlier defeat, he was forced to rely on DARK HUNTERS to achieve his ends. He ordered many of the city's Toa to go on dangerous missions, from which they did not return. He also sent NIDHIKI and KREKKA to capture Toa LHIKAN.[84]

2007 - Into the Darkness / Dreams of Destruction

"All that remains of a Toa of Water named Tuyet," Makuta replied. "She was condemned here many thousands of years ago. She died here, though I don't know why. Perhaps she was trying to escape."
"Why was she sent here?"
"It is hard for me to give exact reason, since I did not even know 'here' existed until a few days ago. But I do know her crime. She tampered with an object of power that did not belong in her hands; it was too much for her. She went wild, was defeated by Toa Lhikan and Toa Nidhiki, and the object was destroyed, or so the heroes thought."

2007 - Ask Greg, BIONICLEstory.com

Q: Whatever happened to Toa Likhan’s team? Has he always been alone?
A: Lhikan’s team was station on Metru Nui for a long time. Some members left on their own, one (Toa Tuyet) went to the Pit, one (Nidhiki) became a Dark Hunter, and the rest were sent to their deaths by Makuta when he was disguised as Turaga Dume. [24]

2008 - Dark Mirror

"You know, you remind me a little of someone," said Bomonga. "A Toa of Water, one of Lhikan's old team. What was her name? Toa Naho, that was it. She came along on one of our missions to Odina to clean out that nest of Stone Rats. Offered to go after the Shadowed One herself, take all the risks. Turned out she was helping that creep escape. He got away; she didn't. Tuyet turned her over to her friend Roodaka and, well, she wound up an interesting exhibit in the Archives."

15 April 2009 - BIONICLE: Makuta's Guide to the Universe

Little is known about Toa Lhikan's past, as he rarely liked to speak of it. It has been confirmed that he was active as a Matoran 17,500 years ago, when he was rescued by a Toa of Fire named Dume. He became a Toa 7005 years ago and was assigned to guard a strategic outpost with a team of other heroes.
[...]
When the Kanohi Dragon menaced Metru Nui, Lhikan joined with 10 other Toa and fought a month-long battle to deeat it. After the fight, the team remained to guard the city. Over time, some members left to adventure elsewhere, leaving Lhikan, Toa Nidhiki, and Toa Tuyet behind. It was at this time that Tuyet attempted to seize power by stealing the energies of other Toa. She was defeated by Lhikan and Nidhiki and exiled to the Pit. [Toa-DH War] After Makuta Teridax took over Metru Nui by disguising himself as the city's leader, he hired the Dark Hunters to get rid of Lhikan and his teammates.[19]

Greg Quotes

  • 11 January, 2004: Greg, on how familiar the Matoran of Metru Nui are with Toa:

  • 25 March, 2004: Nidhiki used Ahkmou to minimize the number of people who knew he was involved. However, his hatred for Lhikan caused him to disregard this and let Vakama spot him, and Ahkmou's incompetence later forced him to get more involved.[115]
  • 3 May, 2004: Lhikan was not a Matoran on Metru Nui.[63]
  • 5 May, 2004: Lhikan was a Matoran somewhere else.[64]
  • 7 May, 2004: Greg does not have any info on Lhikan's past.[170]
  • 23 May, 2004: Greg does not have any info on the origins of Nidhiki and Krekka, such as if they were once Toa.[171]
  • 27 July, 2004: It would be logical if Nidhiki was once a Toa.[172][173]

  • 28 July, 2004: The implication of Nidhiki calling Lhikan his brother is that he was once a Toa.[98] --I'll stop covering quotes on this...
  • 31 July, 2004: The Toa Metru never knew Nidhiki as a Toa.[109]
  • 12 August, 2004: Nidhiki would not have been the "shadow" that eliminated the other Toa of Metru Nui.[175]

Over the centuries, some left on missions or for other lands, others stays behind and got sent away but Makuta-Dume on missions from which they did not return. • 23 October, 2006: If Hakann had warned Lariska about Lhikan, the Toa-Dark Hunter war may have lasted longer. However, 300 Toa is a formidable force even for the Dark Hunters. Dume may have ordered the city leveled rather than risk losing it.[157]

  • 23 April, 2008: It's unknown if Kongu's Suletu belonged to a member of Lhikan's team.[225]
  • 1 May, 2008: The other members of Lhikan's team would receive names if the story required it. However, Greg would not name them for no reason.[226]
  • 16 May, 2008: It has not been revealed what weapons Toa Naho wielded.[227]
  • 31 May, 2008: It is possible the Turaga named places after members of Lhikan's team.[159]

  • 12 August, 2008: Earliest mention of the name "Toa Mangai".[228]

  • 14 August, 2008: Nidhiki is from the Tren Krom Peninsula.[101]

  • 19 August, 2008: The Toa Mangai are Lhikan's team. They were given the name by the Matoran.[21]
  • End of August, 2008: Toa Teridax sent two Toa Mangai, one of Water and one of Stone, to Xia to help create the Energy Siphon Blade. This was done as part of his plan to rid Metru Nui of Toa. (See Energy Siphon Blade)

  • 23 September, 2008: The Three Brother's Bridge does not reference the Mangai, as the Mangai were not a concept when it was named.[163]
  • 24 October, 2008: While trapped, the Kanohi Dragon was unconscious from the cold of the ice.[18]
  • 24 October, 2008: The Toa Mangai subdued the Kanohi Dragon by keeping it cold, and the Vortixx kept it in captivity by keeping it cold as well.[18]

  • 21 December, 2009: We know what the destinies of Tuyet, Nidhiki and Lhikan were. Most of the other Toa Mangai were killed by Teridax. Tuyet has not achieved her destiny yet, Nidhiki's was to mutate, join the Dark Hunters, and die.[49] --(But... we don't know Tuyet's destiny?)
  • 31 January, 2010: It has not been revealed if the Kakama belonged to Naho or one of the four Toa of Ice.[234]

  • 5 May, 2010: Lhikan was not given his golden armor after a certain event. He was not a Toa Hagah.[88]
  • 14 June, 2010: On Tiro being a Toa Mangai of Stone:
"Here's the problem. If you are going to say all sorts of things on Mata Nui were named after the Toa Mangai, then why is nothing named after Lhikan? The Turaga actually went out of their way to hide his name."[237]
  • 17 June, 2010: It's unknown if there were Toa of secondary elements among the Toa Mangai.[238]
  • 30 June, 2010: As a Toa, Dume protected an island other than Metru Nui. It was not the fortress island that Lhikan protected, nor Tuyet's homeland.[151]
  • 30 June, 2010: Lhikan was not a Matoran from Metru Nui, nor was he from the fortress island.[66]

  • 19 July, 2010: Greg cannot confirm that the Kakama belonged to one of the Toa of Ice.[239]
  • 23 July, 2010: On if there was at least one Toa of Stone on the Toa Mangai:
"I can't see why there wouldn't have been one. "[131]
  • 5 August, 2010: Use of a Toa Mangai was eligable for Varian's team, provided the story was set before the Toa Mangai were formed.[240]
  • 22 September, 2010: Greg was never told that he couldn't use "Motara".[241]
  • 22 September, 2010: Only the functionality of the Nihu-Motara Energy Siphon Blade is canon, the name was not canonized.[242]
  • 16 March, 2011: A poll is held to determine Naho's mask, in which the Kakama, Huna, and Mask of Healing were in the lead.[243][244][245]
  • 13 March, 2014: It is reasonable to assume the armor of the Toa Mangai would have looked like Lhikan's. Greg has not put any thought into what masks or elements they had.[146]
  • 4 August, 2014: Teridax-Dume, or his hired Dark Hunters, intercepted any messages for help sent by Lhikan to other lands.[85]
  • 5 August, 2014: No other Toa were in Metru Nui when Lhikan became Turaga. Teridax-Dume had already sent the other Toa Mangai off-island on various missions, during which they were killed by Dark Hunters.[246]
  • 5 August, 2014: It is unknown what elements the other Toa Mangai had.[247]
  • 5 August, 2014: No other Toa were in Metru Nui when Lhikan became Turaga. Makuta-Dume had already sent the Toa Mangai on missions, during which they were killed by Dark Hunters. The Toa Mangai do not still exist, they were all killed.[53]
  • 15 August, 2014: Kodan, Naho, and the other Toa Mangai are not on the Red Star. Eliminator's attacks fry the AI beyond the ability to be retrieved.[44]
  • 18 August, 2014: All of the Toa Mangai were killed by Eliminator.[54]
  • 18 August, 2014: Most likely, the Red Star's systems would detect that the brains of Eliminator's victims were fried and not bother with teleporting them.[45]
  • 28 August, 2014: Locations such as Tiro Canyon and the Motara Desert were likely named after Toa, but it may not have been from Lhikan's team.[160]
  • 30 August, 2014: Nothing has been decided in regards to Tiro or Motara. Greg is wary about using them since they may be Maori terms.[248]
  • 21 September, 2014: Greg, on the names of the Toa Mangai:
"Not a question of keeping them secret. There is no longer an approved list of BIONICLE names for me to draw from, so I cannot name anything."[249]
  • 22 September, 2014: Greg was unsure whether the Turaga would remember the Toa Mangai's battle with the Kanohi Dragon, or if they were alive at that time, as he had not looked at the timeline for a long time.[250]
  • 27 October, 2014: Greg, on getting new names approved (1) and on him getting ahold of new names to use for BIONICLE (2):
(1) "Words that go through legal have to go through not only a foreign language search, but also a trademark search to make sure the word is not already owned by someone else. I used to do a Google search before submitting a word for for approval, but the actual legal check is much more exhaustive."
(2) "Not going to happen. Someone has to pay for Legal to do those checks and there is no budget to do that for old BIONICLE."[251]
  • 3 November, 2014: The Kakama did belong to Naho.[252]
  • 12 November, 2014: There was a Toa of Earth on the Toa Mangai. The last element has not been determined.[129] --This assumes the previous mention of a Toa Mangai of Stone (23 July, 2010) to be a confirmation.
  • 14 November, 2014: Greg, on the element of the last Toa Mangai:
"Well, it seems like you guys want to have a debate over what the last Toa should be, so I see no reason to rush a decision. Might as well let you fight it out :)"[253]
  • 18 November, 2014: The element of ice was not included in the poll for the last Toa Mangai, as five Toa of Ice would be excessive.[254]
  • 20 November, 2014: All Toa Mangai that remained on Metru Nui after the Toa-DH war (except Lhikan and Tuyet) were killed by Eliminator.[255]
  • 20 November, 2014: Lake Kanae, the Kumu Islets, the Motara Desert, Leva Bay, and Tiro Canyon were not named after characters.[161]
  • 29 November, 2014: After holding a poll on BZPower to decide the element of the final Toa Mangai, Boidoh presented the result to be the element of the Green. Greg approved of this, and also gave the clear to hold a poll to decide the Toa of the Green's mask.[130]
  • 30 November, 2014: The Toa Mangai of the Green most likely lived in Ga-Metru, due it being close to nature for a city.[137]
  • 30 November, 2014: Greg, on why Vhisola's neighbor was not familiar with other Toa than Lhikan:
"Simple explanation is that the concept of the Mangai did not exist yet when that was written. Plus this is one Matoran talking -- maybe that Matoran traveled a lot and simply never saw the Toa in action. Maybe she wasn't in Metru Nui that often. It's also possible that the Mangai were a less public team and more of a black ops sort of team."[57]
  • 30 November, 2014: Makuta used a plant (the Morbuzakh) despite knowing there was a Toa of the Green in Metru Nui. This was because he knew the Toa Mangai would no longer be active in Metru Nui once he unleashed it.[138]
  • 30 November, 2014: None of the Toa Mangai possessed a Mask of Rahi Control, because that would have made the battle with the Kanohi Dragon shorter.[256]
  • 30 November, 2014: The Toa Mangai of the Green was once a Matoran, since all Toa outside of the Toa Mata were once Matoran.[140] --This of course forgets about Orde and Helryx (and potentially others like Orde)...
  • 30 November, 2014: The Toa Mangai would not wear immoral masks.[257]
  • 30 November, 2014: The Toa Mangai of the Green was gone -- either on a mission, killed on a mission, or eliminated by Makuta -- by the time the Morbuzakh was unleashed.[139]
  • 30 November, 2014: Greg, on if the Morbuzakh and Karzahni were in some way inspired by the Toa Mangai of the Green:
"Makuta did not need a Toa to inspire him."[258]
  • 1 December, 2014: Even if the Toa Mangai acted more "black ops", being involved in the defeat of the Kanohi Dragon would still be enough to warrant their leader (Lhikan) a statue.[58]
  • 1 December, 2014: The Toa Mangai started doing "black ops" only after they defeated the Kanohi Dragon and decided to stay in Metru Nui.[60]
  • 3 December, 2014: The "black ops" idea was a suggestion. Greg is open to other ideas to explain the quote.[61]
  • 4 December, 2014: After holding a poll on BZPower to decide the mask of the Toa Mangai of the Green, Boidoh presented the result to be the Mask of Healing. Greg approved of this, and also gave the clear to hold a poll to decide the Toa of the Green's weapon.[136]
  • 4 December, 2014: Since the statue of Lhikan could have been made in honor of his contribution to the fight with the Kanohi Dragon, or the Toa-DH war, it is not an issue in regards to the "black ops" idea.[59]
  • 5 December, 2014: In regards to the "black ops" idea, Greg is not leaning towards anything, he simply presented an option.[62]
  • 5 December, 2014: Greg gave the clear to hold a polls to decide the masks of the remaining Toa Mangai.[259]
  • 8 December, 2014: Greg, on using Mata Nui location names for the Toa Mangai:
"I am not going to assign names to these characters. I have no idea what legal process was used to approve the names in the Mata Nui locations, if it was as strenous as that applied to character names, so I am not going to reuse those names for characters going forward."[260]
  • 8 December, 2014: It's doubtful any of the Toa Mangai shared the same mask power.[261]
  • 8 December, 2014: Naho did not wear the Kakama, as it was stated prior that it did not belong to her.[262]
  • 8 December, 2014: The Mask of Rahi Control would work on the Kanohi Dragon. During its rampage on Xia, Kualus simply did not use it for an unspecified reason.[263][264]
  • 11 January, 2015: After holding polls on BZPower to decide the masks of the Toa Mangai, Boidoh presented the results:
  • Kakama-bearer: Toa Mangai of Earth
  • Masks of the Toa Mangai of Ice: Calix, Rode, Mask of Conjuring, and Kaukau
Greg approved of these, with the exception of the use of the Kanohi Rode, due to uncertainty if there was a limited quantity.[132]
  • 7 February, 2015: The use of the Rode was approved for the Toa Mangai of Ice.[133]
  • 18 February, 2015: The Matoran of Metru Nui did not recognize Nidhiki because he looked nothing like the Nidhiki they knew.[265]
  • 3 March, 2015: There is no point in extrapolating Nidhiki's colors from the Toa Iruini set.[266]
  • 9 December, 2015: It's possible two of the Toa Mangai may have come from the same island, though it has not been established to be the case.[144]
  • 17 December, 2015: It has not been established what mask the Toa Mangai of Stone wore.[267]
  • 26 April, 2016: The origins of names such as Motara, Fau, and Kumu vary, some may be named after beings like Mount Ihu, others may just be Matoran words like "Swamp" or "Desert".[162]
  • 11 May, 2016: Greg does not have unshared ideas about the Toa Mangai.[268]
  • 6 July, 2016: It can't be ruled out if the other Toa Mangai were revived on the Red Star, as we weren't explicitly told how they were killed.[269]
  • 14 February, 2017: The Toa Mangai did not constantly fight the Kanohi Dragon during their month-long battle. They had down-time, which is how they were able to endure.[9]
  • 17 February, 2017: The Kanohi Dragon needed downtime too.[10]

Inner Light and Inner Darkness (+ Makuta bits)

  • The only way to create a Shadow Matoran is to drain a Matoran of their light. They will be a Toa of Shadow if transformed into a Toa, and would no longer have control over their old element.[270]
  • If you have no inner light, you have no "goodness of spirit."[271] If you have less light, you will be less "good."[272]
  • Shadow Matoran cannot change their colors unlike Av-Matoran.[273]
  • Upon becoming Shadow Matoran, their colors changed because when you no longer have any light in you, you cannot remain gold and white.[274]
  • All Shadow Matoran, including Vican and Vultraz, can fire shadow bolts.[275]
  • The Hunger Kraata Power does not let you feed on light or emotions, unlike the Mask of Hunger.[276]
  • A shadow leech must make physical contact in order to drain your light. Vamprah, however, can do it from a distance using his mask.[277]
  • Mutran mutated the Shadow Matoran; unmutated Shadow Matoran would remain relatively the same as before they were drained.[278] (Implies the Mutran part has already been stated.)
  • A Shadow Matoran turned into a Toa would be no different from a Toa drained of their inner light.[279]
  • The Shadow Matoran channel their shadow bolts through their weapons. Their powers are on par with the Av-Matoran's.[280]
  • You cannot drain light from an object, such as the Avohkii.[281] Shadow Leeches only work on living things.[282][283]
  • Any type of Matoran can be turned into a Shadow Matoran.[284]
  • The Shadow Leeches and Avsa do more than make you tap into your inner darkness - they drain the light, leaving you with no choice but to tap into it. Any Toa who had their light drained would no longer control their element, instead controlling shadow.[285]
  • If a being tapped into their inner light, instead of their inner darkness, they'd gain light powers. However, it is much easier to tap into one's aggression and anger than to tap into the better part of oneself.[286]
  • If an Av-Matoran who is destined to become a Toa was to be come a Shadow Matoran, they would still be able to become a Toa. In that case, they would be a Toa of Shadow.[287]
  • In his "twilight" form, Takanuva still has all his light powers, as well as all the shadow powers. The latter does not include Kraata Powers.[288]
  • If a non-Toa of Light had their light drained, they would become a Toa of Shadow. They would not retain their original element.[289]
  • The Avsa can be used to suck half of the light out of someone, it does not have to suck out all of it.[290]
  • On why it matters which hand Takanuva uses: " Simple. One, it makes it very clear to younger readers that he is divided in half, and his left hand is the one that holds his lance that was intended by us to shoot light."[291]
  • Despite having two elements, Takanuva has the same amount of elemental energy as normal Toa.[292]
  • In regards to why beings with light powers are not void of shadow: "Light doesn't work the same as shadow. Remember, darkness is only the absence of light -- light is not defined as the absence of darkness."[293]
  • The Makuta may have had some light early on, which they purposely turned away from. Doing good works is not the same thing as actually being good.[293]
  • On why Toa need light to have fire or ice powers: "Cause that was how we decided to do it. Otherwise, you have to have shadow Matoran firing off bursts of light, since that was what they could do as Av-Matoran, and that doesn't really make sense visually." "Basically, I am trying to avoid confusion. If I say the Av-Matoran lose their light but Tahu, say, keeps his fire, it's a contradiction and it leaves people scratching their heads. If I make a rule that everyone loses their original element, then it is nice and clear."[294]
  • On if having their light drained corrupts a being's destiny: "Good question. A bigger question is, if you have your light drained, does it happen because that WAS part of your destiny?"[295]
  • Av-Matoran have more light than they have shadow, but it's questionable if, for instance, Ahkmou, does.[296]
  • Inbalance of one's inner light is less about the amount they start out with, and more that a being's actions affect their amount of inner light.[297]
  • As a Toa of Light and Shadow, Takanuva is weak to both light and shadow.[298]
  • The Avsa could drain the Toa Nuva of their light, however probably not the Ignika, as it's not really a living being.[299]
  • Takanuva's color changed when he was drained because he was a Toa, unlike the Av-Matoran.[300]
  • Vican's secondary black color may have come from his mutations.[301]
  • Kraata-Kal is able to be drained by Shadow Leeches.[302] When Kraata-Kal was mutated, it ceased to be a creature of pure shadow, which means it has light in it, even if not a lot.[303]
  • When an Av-Matoran becomes a Shadow Matoran, they look "normal," they do not have bat wings or "beastial" masks.[304]
  • As far as we know, there is no on in the universe who knows how to train to gain light powers.[305]
  • Inoculating someone with light would not be the same thing as tapping into your inner light. If done to a Shadow Matoran, it would kill them. It would not give you powers.[306]
  • Twilight Takanuva can do anything a normal Toa can, but with either light or shadow.[307]
  • Takanuva would not be able to learn to control his dark impulses, it is something you have to live with every day.[308]
  • It would be possible for a Makuta to obtain a light side.[309]
  • Av-Matoran do not have a different attitude due to their association with light.[310]
  • The Kiril cannot regenerate someone's light.[311]
  • The Avohkii's form and color change does not affect its powers.[312] The mask changed color, same as Takanuva's armor, to reflect him having been drained of his light.[313]
  • The Shadow Matoran have differing colors because it stayed the same as when they were Av-Matoran. It did not change when they were drained.[314]
  • Accessing light powers is not the same as being an Av-Matoran. An Av-Matoran cannot turn into Matoran of the other elements through some reverse process.[315]
  • If Macku, for example, was to become a Toa and access her inner light, she would be able to wield both water and light powers.[316]
  • A single Shadow Leech is sufficient to drain all the light from Takanuva, another Toa, an Av-Matoran, or a Matoran of another tribe.[317]
  • There has not been a "good" Makuta.[318]
  • A light-drained Matoran would become a Toa of Shadow if turned into a Toa. Along with draining a Toa, these are the only two ways to make Toa of Shadow. There are no naturally occuring Shadow Toa.[319]
  • If a Toa of another element had half of their light drained, they would work like Takanuva in that they can use shadow in their right hand, and their original element in their left hand.[320]
  • It would be very difficult for an individual to access both their inner light and inner shadow (not at the same time), because they are two extremes.[321] (I'm not sure what to make of this. Access both in their life time?)
  • All sapient beings, including Skakdi, have at least some amount of light in them,[322] and can be drained by shadow leeches.[323] This also includes Zyglak and Frostelus.[324]
  • It is uncertain if Skakdi could use the shadow powers on their own if drained.[322]
  • (implied) Not all Vortixx have access to shadow powers.[325]
    • Roodaka got her shadow powers through extensive training and "making contact with the darkness inside her".[326]
  • Zyglak would probably not be able to use shadow elemental powers if they were drained.[327]
  • It is not possible to make "Shadow Rahi", because light and shadow are tied to morality, and animals do not have a concept of morality.[328] Rahi do not have light or darkness in them as they do not have a moral sense, and cannot be drained by shadow leeches.[323][329]
  • A Toa or Matoran of Shadow cannot be good for they have no light in them and thus have no way to choose good. A normal being can turn bad because they have both light and darkness in them.[330]
  • Toa of Shadow do not feel a responsibility to obey Makuta or anyone, but they serve the cause of evil. If they see personal gain from obeying Makuta, they would.[331]
  • It is not possible for a Toa to become a Toa of Shadow by their own will (without having their light drained) and then revert.[332] (Unclear if the "no" is on reverting, or becoming a ToS on their own.)
  • Matoran and Toa who have been drained of their light do not keep their old element because the standard elements requires there to be balance in a person. ToS/MoS are not at balance for they have no light. A being who was all shadow or all light would not be able to use elements other than light or shadow.[333]
  • If Umbra was hit by Shadow Leech, he would cease to exist, for he is entirely light.[334]
  • If a Shadow leech was used on a being of Shadow, nothing would happen. Shadow Leeches only eat light.[335]
  • If "Twilight" Takanuva was to drain all his shadow, he would not become a Toa of Light again, because there is not enough light left in him; he would not regain his light.[336]
  • It is in the Matoran's nature to be in balance, very few are all one or the other.[337]
    • Matoran do not have a weak shield preventing them from having all light or shadow; when the Avsa or Shadow Leeches drain them, they create the shield, they do not strengthen a pre-existing one. In a natural scenario, the light or shadow would come back in to fill the void after being drained--Nature wants balance. The shield is a psychic shield that makes you stay light drained, but it is not created by the victim; it is not a case of them wanting to remain evil. The only beings to have prevented light from returning through sheer willpower are the Makuta.[338]
    • Toa have shadow as well. If the Toa did not, Teridax would not have been able to create the Shadow Toa by drawing out the Toa Mata's shadow. The shadow is their dark side.[339]
    • Toa of Light and Av-Matoran also have shadow in them. Takanuva is not perfect and good all the time. Beings of all light are just as out of balance as beings of all shadow. They also do not have more light in them than the average being, they are not naturally more virtuous. They are better at controlling light for it is their natural element.[340]
    • Shadow and light are two seperate substances. If you have both, you are fine. If you drain one, you are left with only the other. If both are drained, then you have nothing at all. There are no all-light beings.[341]
  • That Rahi does not have inner light/shadow is not what makes a Rahi a Rahi. Shadow Matoran are not Rahi.[342]
  • Skakdi are not pure shadow, but they have more shadow than light. They would have to work with another Skakdi to access their shadow powers.[343]
  • Rahi cannot be shadow leeched because they no morals. Keetongu can sense good and evil in others, but he might not have a moral sense, that may instead be instinctive. If he did, however, he would have shadow powers if he was leeched.[344]
  • The coloring of the Shadow Matoran comes from their loss of light. Their mutations are courtesy of the Makuta.[345]
  • Takanuva has access to his shadow powers immedietly as off becoming a Toa of "Twilight".[346]
  • Shadow is very easy to use and control (which leads Takanuva to use it more and more).[347]
  • The inner light/shadow in it's natural state is not always half-and-half. On Takanuva. "he's selfless, self-sacrificing, honest, etc., so he had more light than he had shadow." Takanuva is probably closer to half now that he is drained.[348]
  • Krahka is a Rahi, but since she has absorbed intelligence, she has also absorbed a moral sense, so she has inner light and shadow.[349]
  • Shadow was not always considered evil, this view has come from connotations with the Brotherhood of Makuta's actions.[350] However, Miserix would still be considered evil due to his connotations with Shadow.[351]
  • Roodaka's ability to fire shadow bolts is not a species-wide thing, it's just her.[352]
  • Keetongu probably does not have a balance of light and darkness. Krahka does. We have not seen Toa Hordika that have gotten to a point of not having a moral sense.[353]
  • If a being has neither moral light nor shadow, they would not be able to tell good from evil, or care. They would be driven by instinct.[354]
  • Keetongu is empathic, but he does not have a moral sense in the strictest sense.[355]
  • Gorast's stinger is on her face.[356]
  • The more Takanuva uses his light, the closer he is to becoming a full Toa of Shadow, and he will eventually run out of light. He could still use the Mask of Light, however as a being of shadow, that would be "like a vampire making garlic stew". He can use the mask's powers instead of draining his own, however.[357]
  • If Twilight Takanuva took of the Avohkii, it would go back to being gold.[358]
  • Takanuva's light does not regenerate. If he was to Nova Blast, he would become a Toa of Shadow. He can use the Avohkii as a substitute as to not waste light powers.[359]
  • Though not all of Takanuva's light was drained, Takanuva's shield is not incomplete. The shield is the first effect of the Shadow Leech's attack. His light won't return unless the shield is undone.[360][361]
  • Takanuva does not have the same amount of light as he once did.[362]
  • Takanuva does not have same amount of skill with his shadow powers as a Toa of Shadow would, as he isn't used to the powers.[363]
  • Matoran cannot tap into elemental abilities, so they cannot use shadow by channeling their anger or fear.[364][365] (Isn't that what Vultraz and Vican are doing though, though forced?)
  • When Gorast drains someone of their light, she does not create a psychic shield when only partially draining her victim. As such, any light she drains returns to them naturally.[366]
  • When the Avsa is used to drain a Matoran, it creates a mental shield - it must, as it did for Radiak - however, unlike shadow leeches, the shield is only created when the target is completely drained.[367]
  • Takanuva is not aware that he can use the Avohkii as a substitute for his diminishing light powers.[368]
  • A Toa of Shadow would not be more powerful than Twilight Takanuva.[369]
  • Shadow was not associated with evil prior the Makuta rebelling. The Makuta were given their powers because it takes a lot of power to deal with powerful Rahi.[370]
  • Gorast's stinger is on her mask.[371]
  • If a Toa of an element other than light was partially drained by a Shadow Leech like Takanuva, with a psychological barrier established, they would most likely only have access to their original element. Takanuva could control shadow becuase it is similar to light.[372]
    • They would control both their original element and shadow. (yay...)[373] Using their regular element would not drain them further, unlike Takanuva, because they are not using their light. (Implied their light is drained slowly, however...)[374]
  • Miserix rejected his inner light. All Makuta did.[375]
  • All Makuta once had light in them, back when Teridax overthrew Miserix. Miserix chose not to rebel against Mata Nui because he though they lose.[376]
  • There is no reason to believe tapping into one's inner light would suddenly turn oneself into someone with Toa of Light powers. At best, one would be able to hurl a light blast like Av-Matoran can.[377]
  • Tapping into one's shadow power does not drain one's light and increase the amount of shadow one has at one's disposal.[378]
  • Inhabitants of Bara Magna do possess inner light or shadow, but cannot tap into to use as a power.[379][380][381]
  • Roodaka has not drained herself of all moral light.[382]
  • The Spherus Magna Makuta have not drained themselves of all moral light.[383] (Refering to the Melding?)
    • They do not know how to tap into their inner light. It taktes extensive training and meditation to do so.[384]
  • Keetongu judges beings by proportion of their light and darkness.[385]
  • The Melding Makuta were created the same way as they were in the main universe. They originally had shadow powers, but tap into their inner light to gain light powers.[386]
  • Miserix expelled his inner light during his imprisonment. He didn't join Teridax because he thought the Makuta would fail, not because he was a nice guy.[387]
  • If a Toa somehow loses all of their shadow, they would most likely become a Toa of Light, but lose their ability to control their original element.[388]
  • Some Rahi have inner light/shadow but most do not. "Animals, as a whole, are not good or evil. "[389]
  • Miserix banished his light because his enemied had done so, as to not give them an edge. His enemy would not be held back by having a conscience, so neither would Miserix.[390]
  • There is no "light leech."[391]
  • An elemental power is one associated with one of the elements. Roodaka's shadow powers are not elemental, she is tapping into her inner darkness.[392]
  • A vote was held by the BIONICLE Story Squad on why the Avohkii changed shape. The most popular option, with 49% of the votes, was that it had something of an "allergic" reaction to being worn by a being of shadow. However, this suggestion was ultimately rejected as it did not have a huge share of the total votes, and out of belief that it caused over-complications in regards to the Kraahkan, especially with it worn by Teridax of the Melding alternate universe, and the recently established appearance for that character.[393][394]
  • Shadow Leeches are designed to work only on living things, not objects such as the Avohkii.[395] If you did somehow drain the Avohkii, it would not become a Kraahkan, it would just be a non-functioning Avohkii.[396]
  • With his inner darkness purged, Melding Teridax would be affected by a shadow blast the same way Takanuva would be,[397] i.e. vulnerable to it.
  • It's doubtful Shadow Leeches work on non-biomechanical beings.[398]
  • Shadow Takanuva would not wear Avohkii, as they promote peace and light. Their masks look like the 2008 Avohkii and are not "true" Avohkii - there is only one true Avohkii in the prime universe.[399]
    • The powers of their masks have never been detailed.[400]
    • They wore Avohkii that had no light in them.[401] (Question is raised how an object would respond to this, but past quotes already answer this.)
      • It may be that for this reason, they just never used the mask.[402]
    • Another reason they would not wear the Avohkii is that light is toxic to beings of shadow. Melding Teridax may play by different rules due to being from another universe.[403]
  • It is possible to do the opposite of what Roodaka did, and tap into your inner light to gain limited light powers. However, it is very difficult, the dark path is always easier.[404][405]
  • It's possible for other species to do what Roodaka did.[405]

Other Notes on Light/Shadow

Elemental Light & Shadow

  • Takanuva does not have a physically harming power, however light does affect darkness.[406]
  • As an Av-Matoran, Takua had powers, but he didn't know that he did, and therefore couldn't use them.[407]
  • Takanuva has all the powers of the Av-Matoran.[408]
  • The Av-Matoran can bend light to change their color, but not how their shape is perceived.[409]
  • Takanuva could create a "Light Hand," similar to a Makuta's Shadow Hand, the same way a Toa of Stone or Fire could create a stone or fire hand, respectively.[410]
  • The Av-Matoran's elemental powers are closer to a Turaga's than a Toa's.[411]
  • Midak Skyblasters draw their light from the environment.[412]
  • The Av-Matoran were not blinded because they were not exposed to the light like the Makuta were, nor are they vulnerable to it, unlike the Makuta. (This does not imply resistance.)[413]
  • Matoran of Light are about on par with a Turaga. They can channel their power through theirs hands.[280]
  • Takua was able to change his color, but wasn't aware of it because he didn't remember that he was an Av-Matoran. He was changing his color subconsciously.[414]
  • Takanuva can also change his colors.[415]
  • Comparing the Midak's blasts with Takanuva's, Takanuva can control the strength and width of his, with the Midak it is the same every time.[416]
  • A shadow blast wouldn't do a lot of damage to a Makuta, but it would not heal them.[417]
    • A Matoran's elemental light powers are less powerful than a Turaga's.[418]
  • Twilight Takanuva could not use both is powers to make a Toa Seal, because Light and Shadow would cancel out.[419]
  • Shadow cannot be used to make a Toa Seal.[420]
  • If Twilight Takanuva did a Nova Blast, there would be shadow on the right side, light on the left. There would not be a strip in the middle where they cancel out.[421]
  • The Kraahkan does more than just control Shadow.[422]
  • Changing their color is something the Av-Matoran can do by reflex, it is not difficult.[423]
  • The Avohkii's change in shape is artistic license on the part of the set designers.[424]
  • Vultraz's shadow Midak Skyblaster draws shadow from the environment.[425]
  • If a Toa of Shadow used a Nova Blast, it would cloak a large area in complete darkness.[426]
  • If the Av-Matoran leave Karda Nui they would shrink to normal size over time.[427]
  • Takaunva's increased size does not increase his powers in any way.[428]
  • If a Makuta survive the Nova Blast of a Toa of Light, it would be barely, and because of their armor provide some amount shielding.[429]
  • If twilight Takanuva removes the Avohkii, it returns to being gold.[430]
  • The Avohkii transformed Takua by triggering his latent Toa power the same way a Toa stone does.[431]
  • It's possible the Avohkii changed shape and became bigger due to energies of Karda Nui, just like how they affected the size of Takanuva and the Av-Matoran.[432]
  • Twilight Takanuva can use a Shadow Hand, but he cannot absorb beings with it.[433]
  • Takanuva's Midak Skyblaster does not grow with him.[434]
  • If the enlarged Takanuva took of the Avohkii, it would go back to its normal size over time.[435]
  • Shadow Toa cannot make Toa Seal.[436]
  • Solek would be able to use his solid-light power to create things such as blades.[437]
  • The Avohkii's ability to spread understanding is a mask power, not something a Toa of Light would possess.[438]
  • The Avohkii can do things that Takanuva could not do with his elemental powers, however it does not increase his control over light.[439]
  • Av-Matoran can become Toa in other ways than putting on the Avohkii.[440]
  • Toa of Light can wear other Kanohi than the Avohkii.[440]
  • Toa of Light are able to completely change their colors.[441]
  • On how Av-Matoran and Toa of Light change their color: "What they are doing is not actually changing their color, they are changing how your eye perceives light, so you see them in a different color."[441]
  • On illusions created by Toa of Light: "They can make holograms, yes, but it would be hard to do one that moves as you move and is convincting unless you were really, really, really good at it."[442]
  • If an Av-Matoran become a Toa, they would be able to use the power they were able access when linked with Toa.[443]
  • The Kraahkan's usefullness comes from being able to use the mask powers at the same time as a Kraata power or elemental power.[444] (Implied Makuta also cannot use their shadow powers at the same time as one of their Kraata Powers.)
  • Shadow Matoran do not call themselves Kra-Matoran for they are not a tribe, they are corrupted Matoran from other tribes.[445]
  • The Avohkii "choosing" a herald is a myth. It does not have an intelligence.[446]
  • The Avohkii does probably not still have a Toa Power charge in it, thus it woudln't have worked on the Dark Mirror Takua regardless of if he was destined.[447]
  • The Avohkii has powers that a Toa of Light would not have, such as being able to sense moral light in others.[448]
  • Question raised by Greg: Was Shadow always regarded as an evil element, or did it become regarded as such due to association with Makuta?[449][450]
    • Shadow is considered an evil power because of how the Makuta wielded it.[451]
  • The Kraahkan was made under different circumstances from the Avohkii. There's no reason the Avohkii would also be Protosteel.[452]
  • A Toa of Light could theoretically absorb laser vision (written as "light or heat vision"...) but they may not be fast enough.[453]
  • If a Kanoka infused with light was forged into a Kanoka, it would be a different mask than the Avohkii.[454]
    • If a Toa of Light's Toa Disk was forged into a mask, it would have the power of light, but not the additional powers of the Avohkii.[455]
      • It would still be called an Avohkii.[456]
  • Shadow Matoran do get become enlarged by the energies of Karda Nui. The Enlarged Shadow Matoran absored energy before they became Shadow Matoran, and then remained enlarged. They too would shrink if they left Karda Nui.[457]
  • Artakha created the Kraahkan.[458]
  • The Avohkii could be infected. Its shape and color was affected by the Shadow Leech attack.[459]
  • The Avohkii and Kraahkan are not two forms of the same mask.[460]

Link with Toa/Makuta

  • Takanuva could potentially use all the powers that the Av-Matoran would gain in contact with Toa or Makuta.[461] However, it would require extensive training. When a an Av-Matoran becomes a Toa, they wouldn't necessarily retain their power -- they'd still require extensive training.[462]
    • Takanuva cannot use his power to power a Midak, unlike Tanma's ability.[463]
    • He could learn to use the Av-Matoran or Shadow Matoran link powers, but the Matoran themselves wouldn't be able to teach him as they do not know how their powers work, just that they do.[307]
      • In this case, it is impossible to learn[464] (without a teacher?)
  • All Av-Matoran have link powers. They do not have access to their link powers when not linked to a Toa (or Makuta?).[465]
  • When linked with their Matoran, the blinded Makuta are actually seeing what the Matoran are seeing.[466] (I mean, kind of obvious.)
  • The Toa gain memories from the Av-Matoran through a mental link created when they are in contact. This mental link is one-way.[467]
  • If Shadow Matoran link up with Toa, they would not have the same powers as when they link up with with Makuta. For instance, Radiak would not have his sloth power when linked up with a Toa.[468]
  • Only those Shadow Matoran who used to be Av-Matoran have link powers.[469] Since Vican was not an Av-Matoran, he does not have one.
  • To access the link powers, the Av-Matoran have to "pretty much just climb on."[470]
  • Av-Matoran can only use the link powers when in contact with Makuta or Toa specifically, no other species.[471]
  • The Av-Matoran have the link powers because they are prototypes.[472]
  • Toa of Shadow may not necessairily have access to blindness, vertigo, and sloth.[473]
  • If an Av-Matoran were to link up with a Makuta, or a Shadow Matoran with a Toa, they would still unlock powers.[474]
  • The Matoran have to be in physical contact with the Toa (or Makuta) to use their powers.[475]
  • It does not matter which Toa a Matoran is linked with.[476]
  • When the Toa Nuva connect with the Av-Matoran, they remember Karda Nui's history, not their own.[477]
  • When the Phantoka Makuta are linked with the Matoran, they see through the Matoran's eyes, not their own.[478]
  • The link between the Shadow Matoran and Makuta that allows them to see is telepathic.[345]
  • The link powers of Radiak, Gavla, and Kirop were something they got when they became Shadow Matoran. As Av-Matoran again, they no longer have them. They are shadow powers.[479]
  • The link powers used by the Av-Matoran are all potential Toa of Light powers, but this would require training, and there is no one who can give that training.[480]
  • Greg does not know how Gali forced a mental link with Takua, but does not make sense to be his link power.[481]
  • If an Av-Matoran become a Shadow Matoran, the link power would probably change.[482]
  • Takua had a link power, but since he doesn't know what it was, he can't access it.[483]
  • Takanuva was never assigned an Av-Matoran link power.[484]

Hordika

  • The Visorak venom is not fatal, however the Toa Hordika will become full Rahi after a certain amount of time passes.[485]
  • Even though Hordika means "half-beast", and a Rahi mutated by Visorak venom would technically be fully a Rahi, it would still be correct to call them Hordika (As example used in this case, "Pewku Hordika") as they are more subject to being emotionally volatile than normal.[486]
  • A Toa Hordika who "went over the edge" would eventually become a Rahi.[487]
  • Mutated Rahi are not considered Hordika.[488]
  • Though they are half-beasts, the Mask of Kindred would not work on Hordika.[489]
  • A Makuta would have a good shot at influencing a Toa Hordika with their Rahi Control powers.[490]

Makuta Abilities

  • Makuta can only shapeshift when they are in their Makuta armor. The armor was made by Artakha out of Protosteel. If a Makuta leaves the body, it would most likely stay shapeshifted.[491]
  • The teeth of Antroz's mask are part of the mask, however they are shapshifted onto it. They are considered a natural tool.[492]
  • Makuta can control or influence Shadow Leeches the same way they can with Kraata.[493] (Assuming it is true that they can do that with Kraata.)
  • A Makuta is weakened without their mask.[494]
  • It is doubtful a Makuta could possess a Rahkshi or a Bohrok, they are not "real robots."[495]
  • It is doubtful Vezok could handle absorbing all 42 Kraata Powers, much like how Krahka could not handle six Toa elements.[496]
  • The Makuta's wings are part of their armor. They can fly using their wings or using their control over gravity. They can fly regardless of the size of shape of their wings.[497]
  • Makuta cannot remove their mass. When they shapeshift into smaller forms, their mass is shunted off somewhere else; the same thing happens when someone uses the Kanohi Pehkui to shrink. The only way to take another Makuta's mass is to absorb the Makuta themself.[498]
  • When Makuta create Kraata, their essence temporarily decreases. They can reabsorb Kraata.[499]
  • Makuta can only use one Kraata Power at a time.[500]
  • The Makuta have access to lower levels of the Kraata Powers, not just the highest level.[501]
  • The Makuta are able to shapeshift their weapons.[502]
  • Artakha made the Makuta masks.[503]
  • As part of the shapeshifting nature of the armor, Makuta are able to change their color.[504]
  • The Makuta's blindness damage is part of their armor, not their essence. If they changed to a different armor, they would be able to see.[505][506]
  • Makuta are able to sense if another Makuta is nearby. However, not exactly where they are.[507]
  • The poison of Antroz's and Spiriah's poisonous fangs have the effect that poison normally has.[508]
  • Makuta do not need sleep, but they can be knocked out.[509]
  • Shadow Leeches have a very short lifespan.[510]
  • There is nothing special about Miserix's gauntlet mentioned in The Mutran Chronicles. Miserix was simply channeling his power through his hand.[511]
  • Though Pit Mutagen mutates a Makuta's energy form, Makuta armor is airtight. The Pit Mutagen did not mutate Teridax or Icarax in the Pit because it could not reach their energy form.[512]
  • Makuta cannot shapeshift into much larger beyond their standard size, because it requires them to absorb more mass.[513]
  • If the Mistika Makuta left their armor and got new armor, they would be able to shapeshift and use their old powers. However, it is not just their armor that is mutated.[514]
  • Icarax did not get mutated while in the Pit because he was near the surface, not at the depths where the mutagen is.[515]
  • The masks of the Makuta are made of Protosteel.[516]
  • Makuta can only use one power at a time.[517]
  • The strength of a Makuta's power compared to Kraata levels depends on their willpower.[518]
  • Quick Healing only heals organics.[519]
  • Makuta Powers such as Fire Resistance must be consciously activated.[520]
  • Molecular Disruption and Disintegration differ in that they achieve the same effect in different ways.[521]
  • Using the Mask of Intangibility or the power of Density Control, one might be able to pass through the shield of a Hau, however the energies of the mask may do "nasty things" to you.[522]
  • Accuracy cannot be used in conjunction with a Shadow Hand or similar powers.[523]
  • If the Makuta an infected mask is connected to dies, the infected mask is useless until another Makuta takes influence over it.[524]
  • Teridax was able to rip apart the Toa Kaita and create the Shadow Toa due to unnderstanding the inner workings of the universe.[525]

Makuta Masks

  • The Corruption power destroys much slower than Shattering or Disintegration.[276]
  • Whether you are able to use the Avsa to drain someone of their light, or the Jutlin to rot away a city, has less to do with skill and more with willpower. Vamprah can the do the former, Antroz not so much on the latter.[526]
  • The Avsa is more flexible than Vorahk's power. Vorahk can only absorb one thing.[527]
  • The Avsa can probably drain a Makuta's energy essence.[528]
  • The Mask of Disruption would trigger a Toa's elemental power even if they're not using it, since that is the only power they have. It does not work on Kanohi. The user is not able to pick which power is triggered; in the case of the Makuta, it would be whatever power they were currently using.[529]

Rahi Creation

  • Rahi do not need to wear Kanohi, removing them did not weaken them. They cannot use mask powers. They were probably fitted with the Kanohi by Makuta.[530]
  • Keetongu's species was created by the Brotherhood of Makuta.[531]
  • Greg's impression was that Kanohi were given to the Rahi by the Makuta. However, he too found the subject confusing.[532]
  • The Morbuzakh was not a Rahi.[533]
  • Rahi such as Nui-Jaga were originally wearing powerless Kanohi, which then were infected.[534]

Shadow Matoran Mutations

  • Physically mutated Matoran can still become Toa. Mutation does not necessarily change their destiny. This includes mutations done by the Makuta or Pit Mutagen. The Toa would still be mutated, however.[535]
  • Mutran mutated all of the Shadow Matoran, not just the ones in the sets.[536]
  • There are ways to reverse Mutran's experiments made on the Shadow Matoran. The wings are part of the mutations done by Mutran.[537]
  • If Radiak (in his mutated state) were to become a Toa, he would still be quadrupedal.[538]
  • Since Makuta are shapeshifters, they make their masks look like anything they want to, even the Kraahkan as shown in World.[539]
  • Mutran changed out the Shadow Matoran's masks.[540]
  • Radiak has four legs due to Mutran's mutations.[541]
  • The Av-Matoran were still in Metru Nui as of 2009. The former Shadow Matoran had not yet been cured of their mutations, but they had rid themselves of the Makuta masks.[542]
  • Vican went with the Av-Matoran to Metru Nui. He kept his mask, and does not wish to have his mutations undone, to remind himself of his mistake - allying with the Makuta by choice.[543]
  • Mata Nui did not cure the former Shadow Matoran of their mutations.[544]
  • All of the Shadow Matoran wore immoral masks.[545]
  • Usually when making a new Rahi, Makuta start from scratch rather than using pre-existing Rahi as a basis.[546]
  • Mata Nui cured the former Shadow Matoran of their mutations, including undoing the black color.[547]
    • When doing this, he took Vican's wishes into account and let him remain mutated.[548]

Rhotuka

  • Spherus Magna inhabitants cannot use Rhotuka.[549]

Misc. Shadow/Light

  • On why Takanuva switches mask with Makuta before falling into the EP: "I think what Takanuva had in mind was basically mutual understanding -- if he could get Makuta to wear the Mask of Light, then he would be "enlightened" .. and if Takanuva donned the Mask of Shadow, then he would understand how Makuta saw the world. As it turned out, it sort of foreshadowed their merging into one being."[550]
  • Makuta was giving his all during his Kolhii fight with Takanuva. Takanuva stood a chance because his power was the perfect opposite. Makuta was likely weakened due to producing the six Kraata for the Rahkshi.[551]
  • Makuta wanted the Mask of Light because without it, there would never have been a Toa of Light. He later wanted to take it from Takanuva because Takanuva's elemental powers without the mask are too weak to bother Makuta.[552]
  • Vican was not originally a Shadow Matoran, nor an Av-Matoran. He was of a different tribe and turned into a Shadow Matoran the same way the Av-Matoran were.[553] As such, he does not have link powers.[554]
  • Most Av-Matoran in Karda Nui use their light-bending ability.[555]
  • The Shadow Matoran link-powers work like mask powers because that is what they were originally supposed to be mask powers.[556]
  • Gavla was chosen as the leader of the Shadow Matoran because she became a Shadow Matoran before Kirop did, and chosing the leader of the Av-Matoran would mean the Makuta respected Av-Matoran authority.[557]
  • There are other Av-Matoran that aid the Toa Nuva than the 3 in the sets.[558]
  • Vican being a Le-Matoran was stated on BIONICLE.com.[559]
  • Twilight Takanuva is not more powerful, for he is a divided individual.[560]
  • The Avohkii, as a Toa "Stone," would only have actived if used by Av-Matoran, not other for Matoran of other tribes.[561]
  • The light barrier in Karzahni may have been set up by the Order of Mata Nui to prevent Av-Matoran from entering.[562]
  • It probably isn't healthy for Makuta to wear & use the Avohkii?[563]
  • Vultraz is a Shadow-leeched Ta-Matoran, like Vican is a Shadow-leeched Le-Matoran.[564]
  • There is only one Avohkii. An Avohkii is not required for turning an Av-Matoran into a Toa; any other method, such as a Toa Stone or the lightning from the Red Star, would work. A Toa of Light can wear any mask.[565]
  • Takanuva's tool is called the Power Lance. It has no powers other than what is channeled through it. Whether it is channeling light or shadow depends on which hand he is holding it in.[566]
  • As far as Greg is aware, there have not been other masks with multiple powers, besides the Avohkii, Kraahkan, and Golden Masks.[567]
  • Vican was the first Shadow Matoran, and Vultraz the second.[568]
  • Not all Av-Matoran were down in Karda Nui when the Toa Mata were there -- some were up in the villages, and so not all of them met the Toa.[569]
  • All Makuta became members of the Brotherhood at the same time.[570]
  • It was not Vamprah who drained Vultraz's light, it was another Makuta.[571]
  • In the present of 2008, no evil Toa are working for the Brotherhood of Makuta.[572]
  • Teridax (as the Great Spirit) could not create natural Matoran of Shadow.[573]
  • Some of the Matoran of Karzahni were still in Metru Nui as of 2009, others had left. All of them were rebuilt into stronger forms. There were possibly Matoran that were not of the Metru Nui elements.[574]
  • The Shadow Takanuva encounted by Mazeka and Melding Teridax were the same ones Tobduk encountered. They still wore Avohkii.[575]
  • Elemental masks are named for their element. For instance, the Suletu is not an elemental mask of Psionics, such a mask would not be named the Mask of Telepathy.[576]
    • The Matatu is also not the Mask of Psionics. Not many Toa Disks have been turned into Kanohi.[577]
  • On how the Makuta were prior to shunning their light: "They went about their business and they did their jobs. They had to be careful about revealing to Mata Nui what they were planning too early"[578]
  • Toa might be able to forge a mental link with other Toa (like Gali and Takua).[579]
  • The decision to the Makuta a species probably happened around 2005.[580]

Descriptions

Takanuva (2003)

"Takanuva
This is the mighty Takanuva. His superior tool, the powerful mask, and his incredible courage make him a mighty leader of the Toa, and a defender of the island of Mata Nui.
Takanuva is the legendary seventh Toa, the Toa of Light, who is destined to free the Matoran from the dark power of Makuta. Takanuva is noble and wise, and possesses a great deal of knowledge about the history of Mata Nui and its people. However, he has much to learn in a short time if he’s going to save the island from Makuta. Takanuva wears the Kanohi Avohkii, the Great Mask of Light, and carries the Staff of Light.
Takanuva can focus his powers through his Staff of Light. The tool can be used to scoop up and hurl spheres of Light energy.
The Kanohi Avohkii is the Great Mask of Light, worn by Takanuva. The Mask of Light glows brightly, and its power is that it can bring light to darkness. Takanuva can use it to turn a foe’s anger into feelings of peace, or freeze an opponent in a column of brilliant light.

Weapons

"Nynrah Ghost Blaster
Created by the Nynrah artisans on the island of Xia, the ghost blasters are capable of two functions. Those carried by the Makuta enable the user to take control of anything mechanical in a target for a limited period of time. A Toa struck by a blast would find all his mechanical parts under the control of his enemy!

The Toa Nuva’s blasters create ghostly fields of energy around a foe which can be manipulated by the firer. The field can be anything from a basic cube that traps the target to a claw or chains made of pure energy. Since part of the energy is light, the Makuta are especially vulnerable to this weapon.
"

"Tridax Pod
Each of the bat-like Makuta has a Tridax Pod on its abdomen, in which are spawned the shadow leeches. Once a shadow leech is released and attaches to a target, it drains all light from its victim. Without light, the target turns evil and becomes a new ally of the Makuta. Each pod contains a maximum of four leeches at a time.

"Midak Skyblaster
These mighty weapons carried by the Toa Nuva launch powerful bursts of light – the one thing Makuta are most vulnerable to. But the Toa must be careful how often they use the Skyblasters, for the weapons draw their ammunition from the light of Karda Nui. Used too often, they could plunge the universe core into darkness.

In-story

"It is … time-consuming,” said Teridax. “A Makuta must be a being utterly without doubt, or fear, or any trace of shadow, so it takes long years of meditation before one is ready to assume the title. The powers that once ran this world were mad with a hunger for power – the Great Beings created the Makuta as an answer to that.”"
— Brothers In Arms, Chapter 9
