Hey, I was just revisiting the place and see the splash page, Refreshed skin, and quite a few other things have come a long way since I last saw. Looks great! I had previously had my first splash page hosted on my personal GitHub, and since I can see you've put a lot of work into it I went ahead and updated the Git repository for it to reflect the newest revisions. I also went ahead and took it off of my personal GitHub and made a BIONICLEsector01 organization, https://github.com/BIONICLEsector01, which I believe I sent you an invite to so you can contribute to that. I also made an update script to keep the Git in sync with the production server, which can be run from SSH by simply running <code>~/update.sh</code> (from Swert's SSH account, I don't know if you might have a separate SSH account on this server, if so let me know and I'll fix that). Hopefully using Git will be a convenience and a "safety" feature, so none of your work gets irreversibly broken or lost because of server issues <small>(*cough* HS01)</small>. If there's any questions or you need anything related to the GitHub account let me know. I'll probably set you to have full access to everything on it once you join the organization, that way you can mess with it on your own and have full control. Keep up the good work though, loving what you've done with the stuff here. :) --Meiko <span style="font-size:smaller;">(talk)</span> 01:24, 14 August 2017 (CET)

Revamped parent page nav

(Continued from [1])

User:Dorek/Sandbox

That setup would work well as a 6x4 grid, which would let us keep with the 6 elements theme. Or should we switch to something else for the colors? -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 21:37, 3 July 2015 (CEST)

I was thinking more that each category would appear on the respective pages and no more than that; so "Sapient Species" wouldn't be immediately available on the "Characters page", unless you look at the Classicnav. Which is why I kind of want certain others, like Media and Sets, to be available in all of them. Trying to streamline, as it were.
Of course, if we were just doing all of them at once (or even if we don't and just have a single row), I'd say tailor the colors to whatever the nav is. Maybe do gradients, or alternating checkered type things? -- Dorek Talk external image 22:17, 3 July 2015 (CEST)
Ah. Makes sense.
By tailoring colors to the nav, do you mean having all the buttons match the color of the current parent page (like all the buttons on Characters would be red to match the banner)? -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 22:41, 3 July 2015 (CEST)
Yeah, like that. The gradient/alternating colors suggestion was just a way to make the buttons visually distinct. -- Dorek Talk external image 22:48, 3 July 2015 (CEST)

Alright. In that case the buttons should probably be HTML/wikitext instead of SVGs... I'll do that. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 23:17, 3 July 2015 (CEST)

So, uh, we finally want to implement this? I got Swert to change the MP icons =P. -- Dorek Talk external image 22:36, 17 May 2016 (CET)

Life's keeping me pretty busy, but I'll hop on it when I can find the time. Since the nav just got reorganized, how would you want the setup to work in terms of only showing certain other parent pages on a given parent page (like we discussed up above)? Now that we have 30 parent page icons, it's pretty daunting when they're all onscreen at once. For example would you want the "hover bevel" you mentioned on your list page to show all the parent pages, or just a few related ones? And a Portal namespace (or Parent to fit the existing convention) is a really good idea IMO. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 05:22, 18 May 2016 (CET)

The bevel I was more thinking would be a link TO the parent page nav or portal or whatever, and then we'd just do the underscored links we talked about before. I'll double check and see how we want them to look. -- Dorek Talk external image 05:37, 18 May 2016 (CET)

FC/FQ Icon Overlap

I mentioned yesterday an issue with overlap between the Featured Chronicle and Featured Quote icons and the parent page rectangle. You asked for a screenshot, so here's what it looks like for me on Tahu's Gen 1 page (with my mouse hovering over the Character box so it's translucent). Link This issue only showed up for me on Internet Explorer; on Chrome and also on mobile on Safari, there wasn't any overlap. Probably not a big deal, but just so you know. --Volitak Boxor (talk) 22:43, 3 July 2015 (CEST)

Ugh, IE. :P Thanks. Is it better now? -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 23:17, 3 July 2015 (CEST)
In IE's defense, it didn't have that issue before when we coded it before. Plus it won't matter in a month anyway, I'll be on Edge :P --external image Owner (talk|contribs)
Still not fixed, unfortunately. I've got a comparison screenshot with IE on top and Chrome below. Link I don't think anything's wrong with the spacing for the FC/FQ icons anymore; instead, I think the parent page rectangles are bigger when displayed using IE, for some reason. --Volitak Boxor (talk) 05:27, 4 July 2015 (CEST)

Related, there's an issue with the parent icons, but it can wait until you're back from your fancy hackers camp =P. -- Dorek Talk external image 05:56, 7 July 2015 (CEST)

Hmm, lemme switch to HTML parent buttons and then if the issue continues I can take a look at both issues.
Also the protectors have names now, what? Besides the preview animation and the book preview did I miss anything? -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 20:08, 18 July 2015 (CEST)
It's just the kiri skin, so if that's an acceptable loss, I don't mind (I'm probably the only one that uses it =P).
Also that's basically the only fun stuff. SDCC had an exclusive BIONICLE mask, and the summer sets are out sporadically (not in the US), and we did Makutafest. Thaaaat's it. -- Dorek Talk external image 20:26, 18 July 2015 (CEST)
Alright. Also on the note of the parent logos, I can make them in HTML but then the font isn't hardcoded in... maybe I'll use clear SVGs and just put them on top of an HTML background. That way the font shows up but the background can be changed using a template.
And thanks, I saw one of those bull masks on Flickr but I had no idea where it came from. And I'll have to listen to MakutaFest some time! -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 23:16, 18 July 2015 (CEST)

Image cropping

So, given how the ParentBanner template works, can that overflow coding be applied to something inside an infobox template? Like, to not have to crop anything (mostly in regards to the sweet Gali art we got). -- Dorek Talk external image 05:56, 7 July 2015 (CEST)

I'm afraid I don't follow. If you want the image in an infobox, you can downsize it so it all fits... or do you want to use it as a background image? -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 20:08, 18 July 2015 (CEST)
I mean can we cut off certain bits of images (in this case, the LEGO logo) without having to crop it in our own image editing programs and then re-uploading it.
Also can you fix this pretty please? -- Dorek Talk external image 20:23, 18 July 2015 (CEST)
It's possible, but the code is icky and specific enough that I'd recommend just cropping and re-uploading.
Done. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 23:16, 18 July 2015 (CEST)

Widget

Is it possible to install/embed some kind of Facebook chat widget, or is that outside the realm of media wiki? Or would it require us to update first? =P -- Dorek Talk external image 01:52, 25 July 2015 (CEST)

Do you mean Facebook comments, private user-to-user chat like Facebook has, or just a general public chat? There's an extension that allows for Facebook comments but I'm not sure it's the most secure, and there's Extension:MediaWikiChat (which was developed for Brickimedia) which allows for public and private chats. It looks like both should be able to work on the current copy of MediaWiki. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 06:24, 25 July 2015 (CEST)
I was thinking the former, but the latter could be useful too. How does it work? -- Dorek Talk external image 07:48, 25 July 2015 (CEST)
Not entirely sure TBH, but it looks like it requires another extension too....
Actually, looking back it seems to add Facebook comments to every page, which I assume isn't what you want. Actually it doesn't look like there are any extensions that allow Facebook comments for certain pages, so I'm not sure there's anything out there that'd suit your needs. Extension:SocialProfile maybe? That's how people comment on news articles on Brickimedia. I don't think it connects to Facebook though. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 21:35, 25 July 2015 (CEST)
Yeah, I wasn't thinking every page, although it's not the worst idea. I just don't understand how it would work in terms of, say, linking to articles via a post. Really what we need is a regular old homepage, but Swert would never go for it. I'll look into socialprofile, and see if it resembles what I want. -- Dorek Talk external image 07:33, 26 July 2015 (CEST)

Sounds good. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 23:32, 26 July 2015 (CEST)

Good Job

Yo I just want to say I think you do great work around here. Every time I visit I see you busy doing stuff to make the place better. Wish you were around back when I was a regular. :) -- Gravitan

Hey thanks dude! :) -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 23:32, 26 July 2015 (CEST)

Didn't want to start a new header :P Thanks for the cleanup today. Ironically, my talk page is probably the -last- place any spammer should go, in retrospect. --external image Owner (talk|contribs)

MPLink

Thanks for fixing that...I don't think I ever would have guessed it was something that simple. ζoxHistories external image

Yeah no problem! When a line starts with whitespace MediaWiki gives it that weird code formatting. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 18:13, 15 August 2015 (CEST)

Linkable sections

Mostly for the List of 2015 Online Animations Episodes page, but how do you add in the code to make certain sections able to link to (like when using the pound symbol to navigate to a specific section on a page). -- Dorek Talk external image 22:04, 14 August 2015 (CEST)

When a URL has a # in it, it's actually referring to an element on the page with a specific ID. So wrap the title of each episode with a span that has an id of your choice and you can link to it like any other header on the page. The only problem is that IDs can't have spaces in them, so use underscores or dashes instead. Or you can wrap each episode name in the table in an h6 instead--since it's a header element, MediaWiki will handle the ID stuff behind the scenes and you don't have to worry about the space issue when linking to specific episodes. Then just add __NOTOC__ so the table of contents doesn't show up on the page. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 18:13, 15 August 2015 (CEST)
The former is the one I was looking for, but the latter might work too since in theory the TOC isn't really useful... I'll toy around with it. Thanks. -- Dorek Talk external image 19:49, 15 August 2015 (CEST)

Thumbnails

I AM NOTHING BUT QUESTIONS

So is it possible to include more than one image in a single thumbnail? Either vertically or horizontally. -- Dorek Talk external image 23:25, 19 August 2015 (CEST)

There's no built-in way to do it, but I'm sure I could fake it with a template if you want. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 23:30, 19 August 2015 (CEST)
Sure, if it's not too intensive. I could have sworn wikipedia used to do it, but I can't find any specific examples. -- Dorek Talk external image 23:35, 19 August 2015 (CEST)
I'll get on it. Wikipedia does it using Lua scripting, but from what I understand that'd be way more trouble than it's worth. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 00:06, 20 August 2015 (CEST)

I dig it. But is it possible to get rid of the spacing issue? -- Dorek Talk external image 02:44, 20 August 2015 (CEST)

Jala Forgot His Password

Org

Could you perchance add a second tab to the Organization template? Looking back, we never added one there because we keep our Toa Team pages fairly separate, but I don't want to do that so much for the new gen. -- Dorek Talk external image 19:29, 26 December 2015 (CET)

Yep. Added two more so we won't need to change it for 2017. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 20:39, 26 December 2015 (CET)
Hooray! 2016, here we come. -- Dorek Talk external image 20:44, 26 December 2015 (CET)

Master template

Needs a second tab, but I'm more stuck on what to call it now =P. Ideas? Maybe just leave it as it is? -- Dorek Talk external image 20:40, 13 January 2016 (CET)

It has three tabs now for next year. The names for tabs 1 and 2 default to "Master" and "Uniter" and the type parameters default to "Master/Uniter of [element]," and tab 3 doesn't have any defaults. And Template:ToaGen2 maybe? -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 05:56, 18 January 2016 (CET)
Was there a reason we didn't give Otherbeing tabs? Seems silly to have Karzahni and Umarak have to use the Toa template =P. -- Dorek Talk external image 07:43, 28 January 2016 (CET)

RE: Welcome

Well, you may hide the history revision, though I would like to question what happens if the only revision is hidden, what would become of the page? --BIONICLE 4EVER (talk) 17:55, 16 January 2016 (CET)

Good question! I'm guessing it makes the whole page inaccessible from other users, but TBH I don't know what would happen. When I look at your page history, it doesn't tell me I can't delete the revision even though it's the only one. If you want to hide the info, just remove it in another edit and then I'll hide the old revision. But if you're cool with the info being there, you don't have to do anything of course. :) -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 20:22, 16 January 2016 (CET)

Okoto font

Oh yeah, could you upload the individual Okoto characters? Just realized we don't have them.

(also, the alphabet in the latest Graphic Novel makes the lines look a bit thicker, if you wanted to update it at all. I can get a picture/scan if you need :>) -- Dorek Talk external image 04:10, 25 January 2016 (CET)

Done. They're not perfect but they should work for now. (Please enable vector uploads! :P)
Also yeah. I don't have the graphic novel, but if you can get me a scan I should be able to remake the letters. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 05:02, 25 January 2016 (CET)
K, when I start my scanning process, I'll include that. Thanks for the uploads! -- Dorek Talk external image 05:20, 25 January 2016 (CET)

Sets page

Something about sets page (and the subsequent lists I'm trying to create) puts the navigation toolbox out of alignment. Would you know why that is? -- Dorek Talk external image 21:17, 24 February 2016 (CET)

It was an issue with the template when the table had five cells. Should be good now. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 06:44, 26 February 2016 (CET)

Possible dupe

I think User:The Aimless Wanderer1 might be a dupe of User:The Aimless Wanderer. --Vartemp Talk 02:15, 17 March 2016 (CET)

Random

So let's say I wanted a feature box on the MP that was, essentially, "random" i.e. cycled through images/media (kind of like what we were looking at for the splash page). How would we go about constructing that? -- Dorek Talk external image 23:29, 17 May 2016 (CET)

I'm afraid there's no good way to go that with straight wikicode, since you can't embed Special:Random. There may be extensions for that sort of thing though. The splash page concept would work without using Special:Random at all, since it'd use JS and the site's API to load the contents of a page containing a list of images, and then it'd pick one of those images to load. Potentially it could be done in a similar way on the wiki itself, but given the amount of JS it'd require just for the sake of loading images onto one page, I'm hesitant about doing that. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 05:22, 18 May 2016 (CET)

Hakann

What did you mean when you said "none of the other Piraka have it?" Hakann's the only one with mental powers (in this case, mental blasts). -- Toa Jala Converse 07:17, 7 June 2016 (CET)

Oh whoops. I thought it referred to his vision powers, which all the Piraka have. Yeah, feel free to add that back. Sorry about that. *facepalm* -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 07:20, 7 June 2016 (CET)
No worries. :) -- Toa Jala Converse 07:27, 7 June 2016 (CET)

Rename request?

Hey, is there like a renaming process here that I could use to change my username? (I want to change my username from Cody to Samantha since I'm a transgender girl and honestly don't actually really like my username, I'm just not very creative with usernames lol - also surprise surprise :P) Codynguyen1116 (talk) 05:52, 15 June 2016 (CET)

(if it's not possible it's okie i'll just make a new account and let you know)

Hey Samantha! Yeah it's totally possible, but I don't have the user rights to do it. Dorek should be able to help you out. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 07:49, 15 June 2016 (CET)
Also: I can't rename you here, but I do have the rights to on Brickimedia if you want (and I assume you do :P). Just give me the okay first, because I don't want to do anything until you have technically approved the rename for that particular account. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 07:57, 15 June 2016 (CET)
Ah yes I would like to rename on Brickimedia :P "SamanthaNguyen" sounds good, thanks a bunch :D Codynguyen1116 (talk) 19:45, 15 June 2016 (CET)
No problem. Do you want your old user pages to redirect to the new ones, or should I delete them? (Also the Codyn329 pages are currently redirects, so I'll delete those too if you want.) -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 19:54, 15 June 2016 (CET)

Re: One-Gender issue

Thank you for clearing up the matter; with that said, would "all KNOWN _-Matoran" be an acceptable statement, in your opinion? I've already posted this statement in the Talk page section you mentioned, but I'm curious as to what you think. Thanks again!

Also, this is a VERY belated reply regarding the other account, but yes, you can delete that - I lost the means to access that account or recover its password, so I had to make this one. Sorry for not replying sooner on that; I've been mostly inactive till now. --The Aimless Wanderer1 (talk) 23:22, 9 August 2016 (CET)

No problem! Answered on Talk:Matoran.
Alright. I can ban the old account, but first we should change your username. That'll require renaming your old account to something (User:The Aimless WandererOld maybe?), then renaming your current one to User:The Aimless Wanderer. I can't rename your accounts, but Dorek should be able to. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 01:19, 10 August 2016 (CET)

MNOG2 Charms edit

I just copied the quotes from the Kolhii Skills and Principles and pasted at the Matoran pages. I didn't check that the original quotes were right or wrong, that's why I did not notice the "tress". I'm sorry. -- Surel-Nuva (Talk) 23:55, 15 December 2016 (CET)

No worries. Regardless be sure to show preview though. :) -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 23:57, 15 December 2016 (CET)

I just wanted to draw your attention to Ancient's infobox... His infobox Must reflect that he was a Dark Hunter too, because he was the Co-founder of the DHs, long before he became an OoMN operative. -- Surel-Nuva (Talk) 21:16, 13 January 2017 (CET)

Hey

I don't think we ever worked together personally, but I think I remember you through Meiko. Good to see you around the community still. This Wiki needed guys like you around a decade ago. (a decade oh dear lord)--'Tyler Durden 04:02, 21 January 2017 (CET)

Thanks! Edits are mostly touchups and new Greg updates now. Thankfully there are a bunch of great regular editors around willing to handle all that nitty-gritty stuff. :) -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 01:38, 22 January 2017 (CET)

Multiple upload batching

Jack Phoenix just uploaded a patch to the MultiUpload extension which makes it much more stable in https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/334788/, which was +2'd and merged by MatmaRex. It requires 1.28+ now, although maybe this site is planning to upgrade to 1.28? (I have no idea) Hope this is somewhat helpful :-) I forgot why you asked me about multiple upload batching tools, but I recall you asking me about it. Is it too late now? :P

SamanthaNguyen (talk) 17:31, 28 January 2017 (CET)

Ooh nice, thanks for letting me know. I don't know when exactly we'll upgrade to 1.28 (we should!), but when that does happen I'll install this. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 19:14, 28 January 2017 (CET)

GregCitation

Can we make/create the Template:GregCitation without 6 or 8 votes on the AfC? It seems pretty necessary as the Book/Comic/Media/Online Citations were. -- SurelNuva (Talk) 15:24, 26 February 2017 (CET)

I suppose we could make it, but if we do we'll likely overhaul it later. Hopefully in the future we'll have a searchable Greg quote database where you can link to quotes directly. I'll have to figure out how to best do that though. In the meantime, maybe ask Dorek? -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 19:04, 26 February 2017 (CET)

CwGF

(I moved this form here so that you would be less likely to miss it) Have you ran the script again? If so, can you confirm that all the pages are available? ~OnionShark 16:36, 7 March 2017 (CET)

Sorry, I saw this but forgot to answer. Yep, I ran it. I haven't checked that every page is backed up, but I've run spot checks. If you (or anyone else interested) wants, you can check pages by changing this URL as appropriate. You can't check Page 1 that way since its URL follows a different format than the other pages, but here it is. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 00:19, 8 March 2017 (CET)

Maze of Shadows

I think the Maze of Shadows (game) should be under the semi-canon category instead of the non-canon one. We know that the Toa Metru encountered mutated Rahi, Rahkshi, and Bohrok in the maze, like in the story-mode of the game. If the worm-controlled Bohrok wouldn't be canon, the "Protection" would never have been witten. -- SurelNuva (Talk) 12:13, 8 March 2017 (CET)

I'm not too familiar with the game, but that seems reasonable. I'd recommend checking with Dorek to be sure though. Also, IDK if you're doing this already, but just in case: if a character appears in a piece of semi-canon media and we know that their appearance is entirely non-canon, I think we're better off labeling the appearance NC than SC. Likewise, if the character's appearance is entirely canon, no need to label it SC. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 05:06, 9 March 2017 (CET)

Tarduk's blades on his shoulders are moving in the end of the game, like Uxar's wings in the J2O. -- SurelNuva (Talk) 18:01, 9 March 2017 (CET)

Hey, sorry to be a hassle, but when creating my user page I accidentally created a new article instead in an instance of sleep-deprived stupidity. Any chance you could delete that for me? Thanks! -- The Aimless Wanderer1 (talk) 05:50, 20 March 2017 (CET)

You didn't create the page. It was just a red-link what you've already removed. — SurelNuva (Talk) 10:11, 20 March 2017 (CET)

MobileFrontend sidebar

I'm not sure if you're interested in this, but at some point MobileFrontend's sidebar was recolored as white and it's external scrim now as black (which was originally a black sidebar and white scrim) - there was a Phabricator task for this although I can't seem to find it just yet. I know BS01's splash page/landing page/main page sidebar takes its design from this mobile skin, so maybe you'd be interested in making it consistent? ;-) Here's an example page where you can check it out: https://m.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki - This change actually happened a while ago, although I only recently figured that you'd be interesting in knowing about it. :P

SamanthaNguyen (talk) 01:13, 25 March 2017 (CET)

Hey! Thanks for the tip, I'll see what the other staff think. BTW I saw a message on Brickimedia about a temporary fix for the server issues... does that mean Brickimedia is currently on ShoutWiki? If so is that a permanent arrangement? -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 08:59, 26 March 2017 (CET)
Thanks for asking! So the temporary fix was done by NovaHawk which was taking out the SMW part out of the templates (for now) since SMW uses expensive + powerful queries. At the moment, Brickimedia hasn't currently fully migrated to ShoutWiki's servers although once both GBC and Brickipedia has migrated it'll be fairly permanent. SamanthaNguyen (talk) 00:07, 27 March 2017 (CET)
Ah, got it. Thanks. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 05:01, 28 March 2017 (CET)

Template:LanguageUB and Babel

Hey! I wanted to add an extra section to your talk page to tell you there's an extension that will do what Template:LanguageUB which I'm sure you've pretty already heard of, but in case you haven't it's called Babel! The docs are at http://mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Babel along with an example screenshot: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Babel#/media/File:Babel-extension-screenshot.png

It's quite stable since it's used on Wikimedia's production server. Has staff considered installing Babel? It's not a high-priority thing I imagine, although just want to point in case anyone would be interested :-)

SamanthaNguyen (talk) 03:48, 27 March 2017 (CET)

Thanks for the heads up. I didn't even know that template existed, heh. I'm hesitant to get rid of the template since that would break existing user pages (and I want to avoid editing inactive users' pages). I guess we could supplement the template with the extension, but I don't think it's a priority right now. Certainly a possibility in the future though. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 05:01, 28 March 2017 (CET)

Delete New Page: Set:20009

I screwed up and made Set:20009 because of a typo on the Scarabax Beetle page. Set:20012 already exists. Can you delete the Set:20009 page? Thanks. --Angel Bob (talk) 22:08, 5 April 2017 (CET)

Please delete this image

Please, delete the File:Talvi in a Ko-Metru Chute Station.jpg image, because I found out that this is a dupe of the File:CGI Chute Station.png. — SurelNuva (Talk) 18:25, 3 May 2017 (CET)

it wasn't clean? (insert bohrok pun here)

on the last couple edit diffs [here|http://biosector01.com/wiki/index.php?title=Talk:The_Mountain&action=history]... what was wrong with them? and do you have my original reply somewhere so i can clean it up in my own words without simply deleting it? thanks!Intelligence4 (talk) 16:18, 17 April 2017 (CET)

Yeah that seems reasonable in this case. Go for it. I've unhidden the diffs in question so you can see what I changed. (Since we try to be kid-friendly we're sticklers about cursing, even if it's minor.) Once you've made the changes you want to, I'll re-hide the diffs. In fact we (the staff) will look into doing this sort of thing more often in the future, so thanks for the suggestion! By the way, external links follow this format: [URL linktext]. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 05:18, 18 April 2017 (CET)
thanks :) Do we really have high kid traffic these days? i guess there's no way to really know for sure, but i don't think many kids are going to be looking at edit diffs haha
thanks for the tip on the links. how do internal links work - same way?
also, how does one become staff on this site? Intelligence4 (talk) 20:00, 26 April 2017 (CET)
I haven't seen any analytics, but my guess is we get very little traffic from young kids. Still, we aim to be kid-friendly and we are associated with Lego through the LUG program, so I think we want to stay in line with Lego's brand values.
Internal links work like this: linktext. To link to a specific revision you can either use an external link like you did earlier, or you can use an internal link to Special:Diff/DIFFCODE. For example your edit to this talkpage is at http://biosector01.com/wiki/index.php?title=User_talk:Morris_the_Mata_Nui_Cow&oldid=122978 or Special:Diff/122978. Here's some more info on linking to diffs as well.
There isn't a formal process to becoming a staff member. Basically if Swert or Dorek feel a need for more staff, they'll pick someone who they feel has demonstrated the ability to handle the responsibility. To give you an idea, the last three staff members to be promoted were Metax, myself, and Zo;Tomana. If I recall correctly, Metax answered a recruiting call on BZPower because there was need for a staff member who had web development experience. I took a weird path to staff. I also did web development on the site for a while, and I asked for sysop user rights so I could edit skin CSS and JS files. I gradually took on more responsibility, plus I had sysop user rights, so a member decided to add my name to Template:Wiki Staff. Swert/Dorek were cool with it (or too lazy to correct it :P), and I became a staff member. Then Zo;Tomana was a very respected member who had basically been acting in an informal staff capacity for years. I believe in 2015 he represented BS01 at a Lego convention, so Swert finally made him a moderator. The point is that there is no one path to becoming a staff member. If you want more info about the decision making process I would suggest asking Swert and/or Dorek. However am not aware of a need for more staff currently. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 22:58, 26 April 2017 (CET)
The decision making process in a nutshell: "Oh, hey this person is useful. We got any open staff holes? Yeah? Stick 'im in there!" =P The best/most candid response to queries about becoming staff I ever saw amounted to "don't try and become staff, just make yourself useful and be reliable." I was on multiple MakutaFest podcasts, got to be behind the scenes on a prank, helped with the EHub back when it was a thing, worked on the Main Page... and *then* I was made staff literally hours before I stepped up to rep BS01 at a convention. ζoxHistories external image
what kinds of conventions do we have? i didn't know that was a thing, besides something like brickcon i guess haha. Intelligence4 (talk) 17:37, 3 May 2017 (CET)

As far as I know we don't formally attend events the way BZPower does, but my guess is that Tomana was going to some convention anyway and decided to rep BS01 while he was at it. I'd check with him or Swert for more info. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 01:38, 4 May 2017 (CET)

user page shenanigans

who put a pile of bananas on a motorcycle?? :p what's the story behind that one? Intelligence4 (talk) 21:54, 3 May 2017 (CET)

Microsoft has an AI called CaptionBot that takes user submitted images and tries to figure out what they are. It can give some... oddly specific (and wildly incorrect) captions. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 01:38, 4 May 2017 (CET)
oh man haha that's awesome Intelligence4 (talk) 06:17, 5 May 2017 (CET)

gen tabs sandbox

i was looking at the recent changes, and saw that you're working on some stuff for the gen tabs - just wanted to say that i think the little mockup that you've made looks loads better than what we have currently, especially since it doesn't cover anything else on the page. i also dig how it has a more minimal design than what's currently up. only thing i might suggest is moving it off to the side instead of being centered, but that could really go either way. that is all. :) Intelligence4 (talk) 07:29, 6 May 2017 (CET)

Glad you like it! We were drafting a message about it but you beat us to the punch, check out Talk:Main Page#A new approach to gen disambigs (and some future projects) for a bit more on the goings on. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 08:21, 6 May 2017 (CET)
noted over there too :) who's "we"? Intelligence4 (talk) 22:51, 7 May 2017 (CET)
The staff, specifically Swert and I in this case. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 03:25, 8 May 2017 (CET)

HTTPS

Currently, the site loads only with the older HTTP standard. What would it take to increase our security and load over an HTTPS connection, and who would be responsible for doing that? Intelligence4 (talk) 22:39, 20 May 2017 (CET)

I've thought about this, but one problem I see is that a lot of users embed images from Brickshelf, which doesn't serve content over HTTPS. If we switch to HTTPS we'd have to disallow Brickshelf embedding. I'll bring the subject up with the staff. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 23:05, 20 May 2017 (CET)
hmm, that's a good point. would the links at least show up? i feel like if users can still just post links, it shouldn't be too much of an inconvenience. only problem would be if we have externally hosted images embedded in our pages that wouldn't work, but i'm pretty sure that all of the images we use are hosted "locally" - right? Intelligence4 (talk) 21:00, 21 May 2017 (CET)
All of the images on the mainspace are locally hosted, but we don't allow users to host their personal images here, so if we switch over to HTTPS we'll be breaking a lot of user pages. Even if Brickshelf enables HTTPS, all the existing embedded images would still use HTTP urls, so they would still be insecure unless Brickshelf forces all HTTP traffic over to HTTPS. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 21:17, 21 May 2017 (CET)

I'll just throw my two cents in on this; What's the advantage of BS01 using HTTPS? Far as I know, nothing we do directly here would be improved with the secure traffic. I may be slightly ignorant here, but I just don't need the need for it currently. --external image Owner (talk|contribs)

Sorry for creeping, but without HTTPS, a determined hacker could steal users' passwords when they are sent from the browser to the server, because that traffic is not encrypted. This could potentially allow them to impersonate users or log in as admins. Using HTTPS could potentially raise BS01's rank on Google search too. You can Google "why use https" for details. —Planetperson 22:54, 21 May 2017 (CET)
pretty much what i was going to say. not using https is like not putting a lock on your front door because you don't think anyone wants anything in your house. Additionally, there's a huge push in the tech community (and outside it as well) to increase its usage around the internet, as hacking attacks are on the rise these days. IIRC, the Senate of the United States just mandated its usage on all government (or maybe just senate) websites, and when the government implements a tech standard that you yet haven't, you know you're behind the times haha.Intelligence4 (talk) 23:37, 21 May 2017 (CET)

JS bug in MediaWikiChat

Hey MtMNC! Just wondering, would you be willing to look into MediaWikiChat's JS source code to help fix a bug? The bug https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T166421 which is a really annoying head-scratcher that I've been trying to work on for a while, where supposedly at random occurrences your messages will be shoved to the right (see screenshot in the ticket). I asked MatmaRex to look into it and he confirmed that it's sort of random: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T166421#3313922 (also both suggestions have been tried and they didn't work). It occurs with the latest version of MWC and it's not something that can be reproduced with the version that BS01 uses, so it requires a local host (and 2 accounts/people on chat at the same time). It'll possibly be easier to have it on a public site - so if you want, you can also patch on top of my patch, which is at https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/357518, and then ask Jack Phoenix to deploy it on social-tools.wmflabs.org or ask me. I hope this doesn't bother you too much. Thanks in advance!

SamanthaNguyen (talk) 01:30, 20 June 2017 (CET)

Yep no problem, I've posted on the ticket. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 03:45, 20 June 2017 (CET)

Need Some Help

Well, dang it. I did it again. I accidentally misspelled instructions in the file "8894_Insrtructions."--Harsulin's Ghost (talk) 22:59, 12 July 2017 (CET)

Krahka

Firs of all, thanks for deleting the wrong file. But could we use as a building instruction link for Krahka what have I made? It's 100% accurate, as I mentioned on the combiner's talkpage. If yes, I could make a pdf from the pictures. — SurelNuva (Talk) 00:26, 13 July 2017 (CET)

I also have 2 instructions for Ultimate Dume. 1 which contains the building steps from the 3 manuals, and another which also includes the extra pages, which were included in the 10202 set. — SurelNuva (Talk) 00:34, 13 July 2017 (CET)
Go for it. Would it be possible to combine the images into a PDF and upload it here? I don't trust Brickshelf enough for us to keep the instructions there exclusively. Also, I'd recommend using the Ultimate Dume instructions that contain the extra pages if possible. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 00:43, 13 July 2017 (CET)
Tomorrow, I can convert them into a PDF, and I thought the combination model's page would get the only 3manual pages. I varied the extra pages included one to look like a real BI, but I can edit it to be just the steps with extra page (the first page with the vahki on is the other side of the page with features the extra mask & axle rods) — SurelNuva (Talk) 00:53, 13 July 2017 (CET)
Hmm. How about you move the Vahki page beneath the extra mask page and make a note on Set:10202 that the pages in the instructions have been reordered for clarity? -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 02:33, 13 July 2017 (CET)
Yes, I can definitely do this. I made the note on the set's page, and I'll reupload the instructions. — SurelNuva (Talk) 06:42, 13 July 2017 (CET)

Great, thanks! -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 07:22, 13 July 2017 (CET)

Should I upload the "image" instructions, like how I did with the Protodax to not have them from the other sites? Most of them (all everyone) are/came from Brickshelf as I noticed. — SurelNuva (Talk) 07:30, 13 July 2017 (CET)
That'd be ideal yes. Another alternative is running those links through archive.org and linking to those. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 07:42, 13 July 2017 (CET)
So I lost my UD instructions, so I remake & upload/reupload them today. But I've noticed a bug on Google Chrome. The flash page's left side isn't working for me. The hau on the right is working, the random background is working. Only the 3 lines on the left side ain't gonna work. — SurelNuva (Talk) 20:01, 13 July 2017 (CET)
Cool, thanks! And huh, the menu seems to be working for me. @everyone Can anybody else replicate this issue? -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 20:17, 13 July 2017 (CET)
I'll try to make the instructions for the Makuta Nui and the Takutanuva, and find the other missing combo/alternate models'(the Korean Piraka Kaita sets as far as I know and I'm right) BI tomorrow. — SurelNuva (Talk) 23:21, 13 July 2017 (CET)
Not sure if you're aware, but this Google Doc has links to instruction PDFs for most combiners. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Pldx5bJ2TOtTrgcWiaDUQ4zubFhemUXCaRd6Hu0no_k/edit# If you intend to search for the blue Korean Piraka Combiner's instructions, I wish you the best of luck. We know that a hard copy exists, but I imagine you'll need to delve into the depths of the Korean-speaking part of the internet to find a good scan. --Volitak Boxor (talk) 03:40, 14 July 2017 (CET)
Actually I didn't even know that this exists! Thanks! The blue Korean model is basically Irnakk with Vezok's spike. I could make sy like the "Krahka Building Steps" to it, but my Piraka sets have missing parts.(exactly: my younger relatives lost all the piraka spines) When my Piraka sets are alright, I'll make the BI, if the official-original instructions aren't found yet. If it is not a problem... is it? — SurelNuva (Talk) 07:53, 14 July 2017 (CET)

could/should we put that google doc on here somewhere? just in case something happens to that account or whatever, it would be a shame to lose such a masterpiece collection like that. Intelligence4 (talk) 21:12, 15 July 2017 (CET)

edit description

was this edit summary meant to be hidden? i don't think that was one of the vandal ones, was it? Intelligence4 (talk) 20:40, 15 July 2017 (CET)

Undoing of vandalism. ~ WOLKsite 01:34, 16 July 2017 (CET)
Yep, per Wolk the vandal's name was in the edit description. I hid the username so they don't get to have the pleasure of seeing their name in pages' edit histories. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 02:47, 16 July 2017 (CET)
ah, that makes sense. thanks :)Intelligence4 (talk) 22:59, 16 July 2017 (CET)

Use of "Era"

Could you tell me the proper use of the "Era" template? I see that the Rock Raptors have an Era template, for they had a minor role in the BA8, but the Bog Snake page doesn't have "era" template. So how could I use it properly on the G2 stuff? the G1 is another thing for everything has an era template what needs to have. (maybe only the new ones - like marendar (I added it, but this is a perfect example for a new page) - don't have) — SurelNuva (Talk) 19:30, 22 July 2017 (CET)

If I'm not mistaken it's only for characters, but I'd have to check with the other staff about that. I think Rock Raptor actually shouldn't have era icons. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 19:33, 22 July 2017 (CET)
They actually had before I updated it, I was confused because of that. — SurelNuva (Talk) 19:41, 22 July 2017 (CET)
Right, I think whoever put it there originally was mistaken. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 19:42, 22 July 2017 (CET)
I asked Greg about the Kane-Ra and Kikanalo thing, just to make myself sure that the "Kikanalo" had to be "Kane-Ra" before I remove the BA8 from their appearances with this trivia from the BA8 page. Interestingly the Kinalao was censored because 1 word is inside of this Rahi name (before the o and after the n) so I had to use "[sic]" in the title. — SurelNuva (Talk) 19:47, 22 July 2017 (CET)
Also do we use "Era" for the events too? I've just checked the Battle for the Kanohi Avohkii and it had the "era" template. — SurelNuva (Talk) 20:39, 22 July 2017 (CET)
What is that "edit cooldown" by the way? — SurelNuva (Talk) 09:23, 23 July 2017 (CET)
I checked with Swert and yeah, let's use Era for events.
We're asking users to take a cooldown period, or break, between edits. If you make five edits back-to-back, wait a bit (Swert said at least one minute) before making more edits. This is supposed to reduce strain on BS01's server. Also, be sure to proofread edits with the "show preview" button before saving so you don't have to make more edits to correct your previous ones. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 17:56, 23 July 2017 (CET)
So the characters, factions & event which aren't connect really to specific years could contain the "EraG1" sign? That's what I was about to add, but I didn't know I'm allowed to do or not. In that way I think we should include "Era" on other G1/G2 stuff (locations, objects, books, wildlife etc) where they belong to with/without a specific year. (Okay for the G2 it's just easy 'cause nearly everything could be attached both years. And for the G1 we know where most of the books, comics belong to I think, the guides should not include a year because they don't connect exactly to the main story) — SurelNuva (Talk) 20:29, 3 August 2017 (CET)

That's correct, all G1 and G2 pages should have a EraG1 or EraG2 template. However characters, factions, and events should also have specific years listed if they played notable roles in those years. Also if a character only appears in a reference book from, say, 2004, I don't think that should count as appearing in 2004. More info is on Template:EraG1 and Template:EraG2. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 23:56, 3 August 2017 (CET)

Thanks! How silly was I not checking the pages before asking things from you what's already written on those. Sorry for bothering you with these. — SurelNuva (Talk) 21:34, 4 August 2017 (CET)
Hey no problem, the info there was out of date anyway. It should all be current now. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 23:00, 4 August 2017 (CET)
Okay, thanks. And by the way, the Power Sword was only mentioned for 1 time on the page 78 of the Downfall, and, as I added, 3 sources calls this blade as the Aquatic Fire Blade. — SurelNuva (Talk) 00:24, 5 August 2017 (CET)
Most likely, because it was never mentioned by name in the BL7, but it was mentioned as the power sword in the BL8 is the reason why was called Power Sword on this wiki. — SurelNuva (Talk) 07:54, 5 August 2017 (CET)

log out timer?

hey there - i've been getting logged out while using the site, even if i'm still active, and not letting it idle. was the timer for how long you're logged in changed, or is my computer just funky?

it happened just now as i tried to submit my edit to your talkpage - i was logged in, but got an error saying it's only for users to edit, and it said i was logged out. Intelligence4 (talk) 03:29, 26 July 2017 (CET)

It actually happened to me earlier as well, weird. I thought it may have been a one-time fluke. I don't know what's causing it, but thanks for letting me know it's affecting others too. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 05:49, 26 July 2017 (CET)
server issue handling too much traffic maybe? i've noticed this site is significantly slower than literally others i use lately, so maybe that's something to do with it. or someone's doing a poor job of ddosing us haha Intelligence4 (talk) 01:33, 30 July 2017 (CET)
That could be the issue, I'm not sure. It is worth noting that a bunch of templates with high use (Template:Infobox, Template:Shortcut, etc.) have been edited recently, so maybe those changes percolating through is slowing the server down? Or maybe that wouldn't be a big issue at all... let's see if this is still happening in a couple weeks. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 06:41, 30 July 2017 (CET)

GitHub

Hey, I was just revisiting the place and see the splash page, Refreshed skin, and quite a few other things have come a long way since I last saw. Looks great! I had previously had my first splash page hosted on my personal GitHub, and since I can see you've put a lot of work into it I went ahead and updated the Git repository for it to reflect the newest revisions. I also went ahead and took it off of my personal GitHub and made a BIONICLEsector01 organization, https://github.com/BIONICLEsector01, which I believe I sent you an invite to so you can contribute to that. I also made an update script to keep the Git in sync with the production server, which can be run from SSH by simply running ~/update.sh (from Swert's SSH account, I don't know if you might have a separate SSH account on this server, if so let me know and I'll fix that). Hopefully using Git will be a convenience and a "safety" feature, so none of your work gets irreversibly broken or lost because of server issues (*cough* HS01). If there's any questions or you need anything related to the GitHub account let me know. I'll probably set you to have full access to everything on it once you join the organization, that way you can mess with it on your own and have full control. Keep up the good work though, loving what you've done with the stuff here. :) --Meiko (talk) 01:24, 14 August 2017 (CET)

Hey what's up, it's been a while! Thanks for setting this all up, I just joined. I use Swert's SSH account, yep. Glad you like it! -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 02:21, 14 August 2017 (CET)
