Review: 70793 Skull Basher

Skull Basher: mighty lieutenant of Kulta the Skull Grinder. Bold and brash or belongs in the trash? Let's take the bull by the horns and find out!

The Box

I'll hand it to whoever's in charge of packaging at Lego. They did a great job of concealing how ridonculous Skull Basher's horns look (but more on that later). Then again, they don't really do a good job of explaining his unique set function either, so I guess that balances out?

The Bits

All in all, it almost looks more orange than purple. And actually, there isn't that much to him. As a foil to Onua's 108 pieces, I'd have expected a bit more than 72 out of Skull Basher. But there are some nice gems in here too.

Maybe it's just my mould, but the purple on the drained Mask of Earth looks much more vibrant than on Korgot's mask.

And look, weird System parts. You know this is going to be a pretty interesting build.

Or maybe Skull Basher moonlights as a plumber? Fanfic writers? Anyone?

Maybe it's because I was fighting off a cold, but I actually got a bit lost while building him. He does look rather imposing, though.

Now if there's any part of this set to be excited about, it's the new set function. I mean, it's nothing exactly revolutionary, but it's different and hopefully this is a sign of more innovation from Lego in the future. If anything, this guy should have been the Skull Slicer!

But it's not all great.

I have some bones to pick with this set.

Some beef, if you will.

Do you honestly expect me to believe that this guy took out Onua? I don't know if it's a case of poor design here or really good design with Onua, but Skull Basher probably needed a bit more consideration. I mean, I get that he's supposed to be a skeleton, but did he need to be entirely skin and bones? Some of the Toa this year were just so bulky, but then this guy, who's supposed to be like the evil Power Forward, is just kind of a wimp.

I could even live with that, though. I could even live with the fact that Skull Basher's function makes his arms a little wobbly. I could even live with the oversized horns.

But Lego.

Come on!

The masks already have a hard time staying on now that you've turned the sets' eyes into weak points. But this just takes the cake. If you so much as breathe on Skull Basher's horns, the mask comes flying off. That seems like a major liability, if you ask me. I mean, the guy is just a Minotaur. That's like his main feature, but it's also his weak point?

Remind me not to hire Kulta as a recruitment consultant.

The Brass Tacks

Should I get this set?

No

  Good for people who like:

*Non-standard builds - It's not flawless, but it's certainly novel and fun.
*Cool elements - They don't all come together as well as you'd like, but it's got some neat pieces.
  Not for those looking for:

*Horns - Obvious and unhelpful weakpoint makes playing a chore
*Piece count and usage - I know they're skeletons, but that's no excuse not to be fleshed out.
*A counterpart for Onua - Onua will just steamroll this guy and keep on going.

It really pains me to say this, but this set just misses the mark. Lego absolutely gets a gold star for trying out an alternative set function, but the rest of the set is fairly lacklustre.

I mean, if you want to get Onua's drained mask and some purple ribs, I guess I'd say go for it, but otherwise you're probably better getting one of the other skull sets.
