Set Information

Design concepts for the mask pieces

40581 was first officially confirmed on January 16th, 2023, with an interview with the set designers Nico Vas and Niek van Slaagmat.[2][3] Consisting of 219 pieces, the set depicts Tahu Mata carrying the Matoran Takua while surfing on lava, in their original incarnations as seen in BIONICLE's first year, 2001. Unlike the majority of BIONICLE character sets from prior product years, 40581 uses classic LEGO System bricks instead of the ball-and-socket/Technic/CCBS style of building.

The set was released as a gift-with-purchase (GWP), meaning customers had to spend over $100 (in U.S. markets) at either the LEGO Store or online at LEGO.com in order to receive the gift as a free bonus. This promotion was restricted to qualifying LEGO themes: City, Classic, Creator 3in1, DOTS, Friends, Monkie Kid, and Ninjago.

Several concepts for a BIONICLE GWP were considered, including smaller figures of the Toa Mata reminiscent of the Classic Tahu from 11021 90 Years of Play (as well as more mechanical versions) designed by George Gilliatt.[4]

The instruction booklet also includes a dedication note from Greg Farshtey.

Features

Tahu features ten points of articulation, while Takua has three main points plus two moveable arms. Each possess accessories referencing their original appearances; Takua has a Throwing Disk and backpack while Tahu carries a Fire Sword. Tahu and Takua can connect to one another, and both come with unique printed pieces that represent their Kanohi masks. The set also comes with a display stand, meant to evoke Tahu's original canister art of surfing on lava.
