Review: 75951 Grindelwald's Escape

Our final Lego Harry Potter review. Now that the movie has been out for a while, I feel no sympathy for those of you spoiled by this review. This is the only set released for the Crimes of Grindlewald, so it has a fair amount to live up to. Does this set make people Grin or will it make them Dewald? Let's find out. (Wow, that's the best one I can think of? Don't make me do any more of these.)

Compared to the other sets I've reviewed, this one is a lot smaller so it has a lot less going on. If you're looking for something cheap to break into the world of Lego Harry Potter, this might be for you. Alternatively, if you just want a horse-drawn carriage for whatever reason, then maybe that's a good motive to get this set. It's very well constructed. Watch how it handles:

Smooth as butterbeer. If there's one thing Lego knows, it's making vehicles. It steers, it rolls, it... well I guess it mainly flies in the movie, anyway. But if you're looking to recreate those three seconds where it's not flying, ooh boy, it is the best at not flying! But seriously, the motion on this is very smooth. The Lego set designers have done it again.

The interior is pretty simplistic. It really only seats one, which doesn't exactly line up with the movie, but I get that this would look weird if they had to add an extra seat. The roof comes right off so it's pretty easy to get in there, and you've also got working doors if you would prefer instead.

The set also comes with a new Thestral build. The wing assembly is oddly complex. Kind of weird that they'd make a new piece for this set and not just give it little wing holders. Unless they have skeletal horse plans in the future??? The upside of this is that Seraphina Picquery can ride on the horse's back because it's got a 2x2 chunk taken out of it. What use would you have for a wingless Thestral? Look, I'm sure there's some fanfic out there that you can draw inspiration from.

And speaking of fanfics... this scene doesn't really happen in the movie at all. Sure, Seraphina is there to see Grindlewald off, but she doesn't ride the carriage with him or duel him at all in the movie. Now, devil's advocate, this is the only set that has Seraphina in it, and if there are only two Fantastic Beasts sets in existence, then this makes the most sense to include her in. It's still a little weird that the only set for the movie portrays a scene that doesn't happen. Anyway, Seraphina actually looks a lot like the actress that plays her. This is also your only opportunity to get a purple wand. (Which, if you ask me, really should've been pink. Or just, make it brown. It's not like anyone would notice). The dress piece instead of legs restricts her movement a fair bit. For instance, the set has a set for the driver of the carriage, but only Grindlewald can use it. As for Grindlewald... he really doesn't look like how he does in the movie. No moustache and one eye is just slightly faded to indicate his heterochromia. Plus that isn't even the hairstyle he has at this point in the film! After all the work that has gone into the other minifigs, it's sad that they missed the mark on such a crucial character.

Now these magic blaster things are pretty cool. Once again, they do not appear in the film, and it's really weird that these are the only characters to get them. Also weird that the set only comes with two of them, because I guaranteed these are getting lost within 10 minutes. Then again, my research tells me that this piece appears in a lot of sets in other set lines. So if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for Harry Potter. As you can see from my video, they aren't the most accurate, but I'd pick these things over squid any day.

  What We Didn't Like:

*Seraphina Picquery can't sit down
*Grindlewald doesn't really look like himself
*None of this happened in the movie!
  Other Comments:

This set does look pretty cool, and I'm pretty sure it's the only Wizarding World carriage you can get, but it's so weird how inaccurate the whole thing was to the movie. Sure, imagination and suspension of disbelief, yadda yadda, but isn't the point of this to sell the movie? Why wouldn't you make it accurate to the movie? I give this set an A for Acceptable.
