Kanohi Nuva are Kanohi masks that have been exposed to Energized Protodermis and transformed.

History

The first Kanohi Nuva were the Kanohi formed when the Toa Mata transformed into the Toa Nuva and the thirty subsequent Kanohi Nuva made by the residents of Artakha that were teleported to Mata Nui. After the Bohrok-Kal's theft of the Nuva Symbols, the Turaga advised the Toa Nuva to seek out the thirty hidden Kanohi Nuva. With the Turaga's instruction, each Toa Nuva successfully obtained these masks, which remain at their Suva as secondary masks with the exception of Tahu's, which were destroyed with Ta-Koro by the Rahkshi.

The Kanohi Rua Nuva was formed when Lewa, Gali, and Kopaka merged into Wairuha Nuva to battle the three Bohrok-Kal Gahlok-Kal, Lehvak-Kal, and Kohrak-Kal. When Wairuha Nuva was forced apart into the Toa Nuva who had formed him, the mask ceased to exist. The Kanohi Aki Nuva would likewise form if Tahu, Pohatu, and Onua were to merge into Akamai Nuva, although such a fusion has never occurred.

Artakha later gave each of the Toa Nuva an environmentally shapeshifting Kanohi Nuva along with the rest of their new Adaptive Armor, replacing the Kanohi Nuva they had worn as their primary masks. Together with the thirty-one Kanohi Nuva previously obtained, these were the only Kanohi Nuva in existence.

When the Kanohi Ignika devolved Tahu back into a Toa Mata, his Hau Nuva was also transformed into a regular Hau.

Characteristics

As Kanohi Nuva are more powerful than standard Kanohi, they have certain differences that set them apart:

  • They give their user(s) an enhanced version of the original mask's power.
  • They grant their user the ability to share their mask power with nearby beings (even Matoran, Rahi, and Spherus Magna inhabitants[1]), although the range for this is limited.
  • Only Toa Nuva can mentally trigger the use of a Kanohi Nuva.

Only eight types of Kanohi Nuva are currently known to exist. They are:

Set Information

The Kanohi Nuva were first released in summer 2002 in the Toa Nuva sets, each containing their usual mask in their primary color. In the same year the "Kanohi Nuva and Krana" pack was released, featuring three random Krana and two random Kanohi Nuva in any of the primary colors of the Toa Nuva.

Silver Kanohi Nuva (representing the masks of the Toa Nuva after the loss of their Nuva Symbols) were released in early 2003 in the "Kanohi Nuva and Krana-Kal" pack. This set featured three random Krana-Kal and two random Kanohi Nuva either in any of the primary colors of the Toa Nuva or in silver.

A special Hau Nuva, blended with red and green plastic, represents Tahu's Hau Nuva when poisoned by the Rahkshi. It was originally released with a compilation of the BIONICLE Chronicles books, but due to a shortage, Lhikan's Hau was included in later editions. The Poisoned Hau Nuva was later included in other promotions, such as an issue of the German BIONICLE magazine and a British promotions including several comics and Turaga Vakama.

Kanohi Nuva were released again in 2008, with Kopaka, Lewa, and Pohatu in their forms adapted to the skies of Karda Nui, and three more Kanohi Nuva were released with Tahu, Gali, and Onua in summer 2008, with their Kanohi adapted to the swamp environment of Karda Nui. The Miru Nuva and Kakama Nuva were also released once more in the summer, this time adapted to their forms while in vehicles.
