Good question. The BEU tells a different story from what is presented on the page. "The blasters were originally designed on Xia and sold to the Dark Hunters, then stolen from that organization by agents of the Order of Mata Nui. They were stored on Voya Nui and disappeared into the sea when a section of that island broke off. The weapons were recovered from the sea floor by the Barraki." -BEU, p.24 As for the question: as well as a quote for them being stored in the pit.
