Over the years, The LEGO Group has released a number of BIONICLE Video Games. These games have spanned multiple consoles, including the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, Playstation 2, Gamecube, Xbox, and PC.

History

In 2001, LEGO decided to put a could portion of canon storyline into video games. One company was given the permission to create a Game Boy Advance and computer game. The GBA game was BIONICLE: Quest for the Toa. This video game told the story of Takua's quest to recover the missing Turaga, their Badges of Office, and the Toa Stones. At the end he summons the Toa Mata to the island, and gets knocked out. The Mata Nui Online Game picks up from this point. The company also was set to make BIONICLE: The Legend of Mata Nui, a game detailing canon storyline in-between the three comics in 2001, and picking up after they finished. The game was scrapped, though preliminary copies were distributed to around fifteen individuals. The story that was in the game was changed, and the game is now non-canon. It was meant to pick up story at some point after the events of Triumph of the Toa.

In 2002, BIONICLE: Matoran Adventures was again released for the Game Boy Advance. One plays as a Matoran trying to defeat Rahi and Bohrok and several other bosses. In late 2003, BIONICLE: The Game was released. It was for Xbox, PC, Gamecube, Game Boy Advance, and Playstation 2. The game was meant to take you from 2001 to 2003 in the ultimate gaming experience. The game took too long again, and was released in-complete, and was non-canon. The Mata Nui Explorer was the bonus feature included in BIONICLE: Mask of Light, and featured bios of the regions of the island of Mata Nui and the characters in the film narrated by Takua. Metru Nui Explorer was a bonus feature in BIONICLE 2: Legends of Metru Nui, and BIONICLE 3: Web of Shadows. Both allowed you to hear either Whenua or Nuju's voice outlining characters featured in the movie.

The BIONICLE: Maze of Shadows game released in 2005 was based off of and expanded the story of BIONICLE Adventures 6: Maze of Shadows detailing the quest of the Toa Metru journeying through the Maze of Shadows to retrieve Energized Protodermis to give to the Karzahni, who needs it to cure Nokama after the Rahi Nui attacks her. This game was mainly canon, and an issue with the Bohrok being active was settled in a story contest where worms took control of the Bohrok. The next year, BIONICLE Heroes was released multi-platform detailing the quests of the Toa Inika. The console version had you fighting foes as the Inika, and eventually the Piraka and Vezon bosses to retrieve the Ignika. The DS version is fighting through Piraka and eventually Teridax as a Silver Toa, and then the Inika when they are unlocked to liberate Voya Nui. In the GBA version, you first play as the Toa Mata, upgrading to Toa Nuva, then Inika as you free the island. The mobile version has you exploring and liberating the island as the Inika only.

In 2006 as well, the BIONICLE Challenge mobile game was released where you play as Matau, Nuparu Inika or Kualus as you race against the other two players you did not choose in order to try and place first. The final game was the mobile BIONICLE Defenders game was a tower defense game where you tried to stop an army of Creeps. Powerful Toa Mahri towers could also be placed to cause even more damage.

In the game, the player would take the role of the Toa Mata and collect the Kanohi Masks of Power. The game was cancelled due to time constraints and a multitude of issues with its functionality.
  • BIONICLE: City of Legends was the tentatively-named sequel to BIONICLE: The Game, set for release in 2004. In the game, players would presumably control the Toa Metru. At some point during production it was cancelled for unknown reasons.
