Talk:Toa Inika

From BIONICLEsector01

Why don't we combine this with the toa mahri page? they're the same characters, and we don't have separate pages for "hahli" "hahli inika" and "hahli mahri". Intelligence4 (talk) 17:55, 21 April 2014 (CEST)

The same characters, yes, but when they became the Toa Mahri, they changed significantly from the Toa Inika they were before. There's also precedent: we have separate pages for the Toa Mata and Toa Nuva, and Toa Metru and Toa Hordika. Besides, if we were to merge them, how would we handle the names? "Toa Inika/Mahri"? "The Toa Formerly Known as Inika But Now Mahri"? I think our current system works perfectly well. --Angel Bob (talk) 21:48, 21 April 2014 (CEST)
I'd advocate changing those pages as well of course, and i'd also advocate for "Mata/Nuva". or just "nuva", and we could redirect the toa mata page to them. The reason I brought this up is that if i'm (or anyone else) reading about them, i want to be able to read their full history in one spot. personally, i think having it split up is redundant and kinda... annoying, for lack of a better word. Intelligence4 (talk) 22:10, 21 April 2014 (CEST)
It sort of has to do with whether or not we consider them different "species" of sorts, since all of those pages are as a result of some kind of special transformation. But I think all of the cases we have make themselves distinct; Tahu claims Toa Nuva as their new team name, the Mahri adopt it by virtue of their locational proximity, and the Hordika stop going by Hordika when they transform back into Toa Metru.
The argument can easily go both ways, of course, but the current system is easily the simplest. There's a lot of things we could do in retrospect, but this one definitely wouldn't be worth it.
Besides, I love showcasing all of those splash pages from the comics that invariably feature the new team. -- I AM THE DOREK do not truffle with me 06:57, 22 April 2014 (CEST)

Pronunciation

Shouldn't the pronunciation be In-NEE-kah and not I-NEE-kah. The I in the pronunciation we have on the page would be pronounced like when you say "I am" and as I recall the narrator for the Inika promos said it like In-NEE-kah, or Ih-NEE-kah. Does Greg say it differently? What is correct? --Luka1184 (talk) 17:32, 20 May 2015 (CEST)

The former, with an "ih".
(I always pronounce it "Ih-NIGH-ka" but whatever) -- Dorek Talk External Image 18:19, 20 May 2015 (CEST)
How come the pronunciation's been changed since last we talked about this? Did Greg give some other pronunciation? By the way, while many guide books and such give pronunciations of words with the letter i in them as "igh" or "eye" the common Matoran orthography is "ee" or "ih" whenever "i" appears, based on its origins in Maori, Polynesian and other tribal languages. EDIT: 05:12 I've changed it back. --Luka1184 (talk) 04:07, 23 July 2016 (CET)

It was pronounced that way in the promotional videos, which were unfortunately the only audio we ever received.Intelligence4 (talk) EDIT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZbCsJttSyE He says "new inika (ih NIGH ka) heroes from bionicle" Intelligence4 (talk) 07:25, 1 August 2016 (CET)

No, it is not. The audio version of the Destiny War serial has Greg Farshtey pronouncing it as "Ih-NEE-kah", right here https://youtu.be/1Zs_ry-2mUg?t=242 Usually in cases like this, I seem to recall that we tend to go with what Greg said. Is that right? Or should we use the ad as our source? --Luka1184 (talk) 21:20, 4 August 2016 (CET)
huh, interesting. they're both equally canon sources... could we list both? i wonder what dorek would have to say on the matter. (is there a way to tag people?)
just a little aside: someone once pointed out that if someone doesn't know how to say a word, it means they learned that word from reading it. The fact that we have so many pronunciation "issues" in bionicle just shows how much of the story was told through written material instead of stuff like a TV show, like most popular stories are today, and i think that's kinda cool, how unique bionicle was with its storytelling, and the fans who read it. There has to be a pronunciation SOMEWHERE, I just don't have my books handy. Has anybody checked Encyclopedia v2? -- Dorek Talk External Image 08:29, 8 August 2016 (CET)

Encyclopedia v2 says i-NEE-kah. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 17:45, 8 August 2016 (CET)
So is the contention over the beginning "i" sound? Without the emphasis, it can't really anything but "ih" as opposed to "eye". -- Dorek Talk External Image 17:53, 8 August 2016 (CET)
Oh yeah, I think it's supposed to be the ih sound as well, like how Greg pronounces it in the serials. I thought the contention was over the NEE vs. NIGH. I guess the question is, should we use write it as i-NEE-kah like the encyclopedia does, or ih-NEE-kah, which isn't how it's written in the encyclopedia but is less ambiguous. -- Morris the Mata Nui Cow (talk) 18:08, 8 August 2016 (CET)

i think the question was only about the second "i". the first "i" is definitely a short vowel, but the question is whether or not the second "i" is a short or long vowel, since we have conflicting canon sources on each. can both be correct? Intelligence4 (talk) 08:41, 15 August 2016 (CET)

People can pronounce things however they want, is the short answer; especially with made-up languages, expecting all speakers to get the right emphasis is kinda silly. That said, the "official" one is always the written one that's provided. -- Dorek Talk External Image 10:18, 15 August 2016 (CET)

Page Quote

The Toa referenced by Krakua in Time Trap cannot be Toa Inika because Krakua says that Vakama will send them on their quest and he does not, Jaller organizes a group of his friends to go on his own because the Toa Nuva had yet to return and nobody would tell him what was going on except for Nokama. It therefore makes more sense that Krakua was referring to the Toa Nuva, and not the Inika, because Vakama is the one to actually send them on the quest to retrieve the Mask of Life. -LavaringX (talk) 04:31, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

I believe that Greg confirmed that it is the Toa Inika, as the quote was meant to set up the 2006/2007 story. And the Toa Inika were the only Toa team intvined with lightning (brave the lightning), they fought in a vulcano with the Piraka, Umbra, Vezon, and Fenrakk/Kardas (walk through the fire), faced the Barraki and idirectly allied themselves with Teridax himself when he used Maxilos (stared into the eyes of evil -Matoro literally done this-), and if the Inika/Mahri failed, the universe would have died (if they waver even once, they will die), exactly what Krakua said.--Surel-Nuva (Talk) 06:56, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, greg quote: https://greg.thegreatarchives.com/2003-2008/page156#post6238-line4,30 Can you please not post the same thing on three different talk pages? ~ Wolk (talk) 13:21, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
