Spiriah was the Makuta of Zakaz and a rogue member of the Brotherhood of Makuta.

Biography

Early life

Spiriah was created by Mata Nui[2] from a pool of liquid Antidermis on an island in the southern reaches of the Matoran Universe, shortly after its creation.[3] He then became a member of the Brotherhood of Makuta, working on experiments with Rahi and creating breeds of them to populate the universe,[2] though he lacked the skill to do so.[4]

Following the Matoran Civil War on Metru Nui, Spiriah was assigned by Makuta Miserix to supervise the island of Zakaz,[5][6][7] as well as the island of Artidax to the south.[citation needed]

During the meeting at the Convocation Chamber when Teridax revealed his plan and took control of the Brotherhood, Spiriah was one of the first Makuta to side with him. After Teridax took control, he ordered Spiriah and Krika to kill Miserix, but instead Krika imprisoned the ex-leader on Artidax.[8] Spiriah was aware of Krika's treachery, but never revealed it.[9][10][11]

Spiriah selected a team of Toa Hagah to serve as his bodyguards.[12]

Exile

Around 70,000 years ago, Spiriah saw the potential for a powerful army in the Skakdi, the native residents of Zakaz, and began tampering with them. The Brotherhood claimed that Spiriah was a rogue agent, though the Order of Mata Nui later suspected that Spiriah had been operating under the Brotherhood's orders all the time. The Skakdi began exhibiting various new abilities, such as elemental and vision powers. Spiriah left Zakaz, intending to return at a later time and leaving a few Visorak spiders to monitor the island. In his absence, however, the Skakdi rose up, wiped out all the Visorak on Zakaz, and turned on each other. By the time Spiriah returned to check up on his experiment, the entire native population was at war with itself.[5][6]

As a result of this mistake, Spiriah went into hiding, knowing that Teridax ordered his execution.[13] His region of Zakaz was reassigned to Krika,[14] and his team of Toa bodyguards were assigned to other duties.[15] After Toa Norik and his team rebelled against Teridax, many of the Brotherhood's Toa Hagah were killed, while others managed to survive. It is unknown which fate attended Spiriah's former team.[16][17]

Spiriah eventually underwent an evolution into a being of energy and armor, a change that also affected the other Makuta.[18] The Makuta who still formed the Brotherhood had their armor modified by the Nynrah Ghosts, but it is unknown how Spiriah adapted to his new nature.

At some point, Spiriah successfully conviced the Zyglak, that he would help them wipe out the Matoran civilization and make them the dominant species of the universe.[19]

Order of Mata Nui

Voyage

Spiriah was later captured by the Order of Mata Nui and forced to join a suicide mission led by Brutaka. Spiriah agreed to join the team in order to avoid the punishment by the Order, much like other members of the team.[7]

While the team stole a boat on the island of Stelt, Spiriah deduced that the team's mission was to locate and free Miserix. Hoping instead to take the group to Zakaz and exact revenge on the Skakdi for their role in his expulsion from the Brotherhood, he sent a message to a tribe of Zyglak, requesting their assistance in hijacking the ship. After Brutaka informed the team of their goal, Spiriah revealed his plan and cornered the boat with his Zyglak fleet. Spiriah seized command of the boat and piloted it to Zakaz.[20]

When Spiriah reached Zakaz, Dark Hunter patrol ships surrounding the island were swiftly destroyed by his Zyglak. However, Brutaka had prepared countermeasures: through the last member of the team, Lariska, who he had kept secret, he directed Ehlek's species to attack the Zyglak fleet, which was swiftly defeated. Taken by surprise, Spiriah was knocked to the ground by Brutaka, who introduced Lariska to the team, reasserted himself as its leader, and threatened Spiriah to not attempt any future tricks.[21]

After Brutaka had regained control of the ship, the group traveled to Tren Krom's Island, and were given weapons; Spiriah was armed with a Midak Skyblaster by Brutaka. Shortly afterwards, he recognized the island from an account Mutran once told him. When Tren Krom attacked the group, Spiriah attempted to escape the trap by shapeshifting into a form with wings, but was struck down by a spear created from stone and was barely caught by Lariska.[22] Spiriah and the rest of the team followed Brutaka into Tren Krom's cave. While bargaining with Tren Krom, Lariska revealed that the universe was in danger, and at Brutaka's request, Spiriah added that if the Makuta conquered it they would have the power to kill anyone, including Tren Krom himself. Enraged at the fate of the universe and in denial over the possibility of his death, Tren Krom placed nightmarish visions into the minds of Spiriah and the others. After killing Carapar, Tren Krom hurled Brutaka at the rest of the team. Spiriah managed to catch him using his power of Magnetism, and the team fled.[23]

Artidax

Shortly after fleeing Tren Krom's island, the team arrived on the island of Artidax, and Spiriah expressed his doubts about the rescue. Spiriah was immediately attacked by a hand of living sand, which had detected his nature as a Makuta. The hand almost pulled him underground before Roodaka mutated it into a swarm of Fireflyers. After some encouragement from Brutaka, who convinced him that he could be the leader of the Brotherhood if they succeeded, Spiriah agreed to act as the team's guide of the island. He nearly walked into another trap that would have released boulders on top of the group, but was stopped by Vezon. Bypassing the trap, they entered a tunnel in the side of a mountain, and were trapped inside after Takadox cut the vine to trigger the trap, causing an avalanche that sealed them in.[24]

Spiriah freed himself from the rubble with his Shadow powers and led the way down the tunnel to a bridge, where thousands of insect Rahi rose and blocked the exits. Brutaka ordered Spiriah to command the Rahi with his Rahi Control power, but Spiriah demanded his freedom in exchange. Brutaka knocked Spiriah off the bridge, with Spiriah barely clinging on, and threatened to send him to a realm of light via his Olmak. Spiriah decided to use his power, but gave up in frustration because a stronger will, most likely Miserix, was controlling them. Roodaka got them through the cave and led the team towards the chamber where Miserix was held.[25]

As soon as Miserix spotted Spiriah, he commanded him to come forward. Miserix remembered Spiriah, and pointed out that he was one of the first to rebel against him. Spiriah attempted to convince Miserix that he and all of the Makuta wanted to free Miserix, but were not permitted to do so by Teridax. However, Miserix did not believe this, and absorbed Spiriah with his Shadow Hand, killing him in the process.[26]

Abilities and Traits

Like all Makuta, Spiriah had access to Shadow powers and the forty-two Kraata powers. He also had the ability to create Kraata.

Spiriah was arrogant like all Makuta, but was unable to live up to this standard. He lacked skills in Rahi creation, and was deficient in leadership traits, acting more in the role of a follower. Though he had aspired to greatness, he was incapable of achieving anything of significance.[citation needed] He perceived his inadequacies as a result of victimization by the other Makuta, and grew embittered toward them.[20]

Mask and Tools

Spiriah wore the Kanohi Jutlin, the Great Mask of Corruption. He had sharp claws, as well as poisonous fangs morphed into his mask.[27]

The Order of Mata Nui outfitted him with a Midak Skyblaster for his quest.[22]

Set Information

Spiriah as a set combiner

Spiriah can be built out of 8686 Toa Lewa, 8691 Antroz, 8944 Tanma, and 8947 Radiak. The model includes a Tridax Pod and a maskless Matoran-like figure. Neither feature is canon; the model includes them to promote the Phantoka Makuta's features.[28][29]

Quotes

"I am a Makuta. Disgraced, perhaps; a victim of jealousy and prejudice, most definitely."
— Spiriah, Federation of Fear

"They are outcasts. And so am I. Now, Brutaka, I am taking command of this ship. We will be setting a new course, for the island of Zakaz. It was there that I met defeat and disgrace – there that my grand experiment failed, because the inhabitants were too savage to know what to do with my gifts. It is their fault I was cast out of the Brotherhood – and now they are going to pay!"
— Spiriah, Federation of Fear

Trivia

  • The Dark Hunter Tracker was sent in pursuit of Spiriah, hoping to capture him so that the Dark Hunters might interrogate him for information on the Brotherhood.[30][31][32]
  • The word "Spiriah" has become Matoran slang for "failure" due to Spiriah's failed experiment on Zakaz.[21]
  • As Spiriah and Miserix were expelled from the Brotherhood of Makuta before the species evolved into pure energy, they did not receive armor modifications from the Nynrah Ghosts.[18]
  • Despite being marked for death and entering self-exile, Spiriah technically remained a member of the Brotherhood of Makuta until he died.[33]
