The Southern Islands are two chains of islands in the Matoran Universe.

History

The Southern Islands were created by the Great Beings during the construction of the Matoran Universe. The islands became home to various Rahi and several Sapient Species but very few were ever settled on or explored by Matoran. When the Hand of Artakha was disbanded, one of its former members, Axonn was bereft of purpose and resorted to conquest, eventually conquered a number of the Southern Islands. Hydraxon later approached him and offered him a membership in the newly formed Order of Mata Nui, and with a new reason for living, Axonn gave up his dreams of conquering. During the reign of the League of Six Kingdoms, the Barraki conquered very few of the islands, as they were strategically worthless.

After the Matoran Civil War, Makuta Bitil was assigned to govern over the western southern chain, Makuta Spiriah was assigned to Artidax, and Makuta Chirox received several islands in the eastern one.[1]

The northernmost island of the eastern chain is inhabited by numerous Rahi mutated by the Energized Protodermis Entity. On the island is a large lake of Energized Protodermis that lies inside a large cavern. The lake was at some point visited by Chirox in order to construct Rahkshi. It was later visited by Toa Helryx and Keetongu in effort to destroy the lake. The Entity, however, would not allow them and attacked them with a wave or Energized Protodermis. The duo managed to escape when a portal appeared and their place was taken by Vezon, who became merged with his Kanohi Olmak.

The island of Artidax is also located within the southern islands. The former leader of the Brotherhood, Miserix, was imprisoned within the island by Makuta Krika, instead of executed as instructed by Teridax. Krika, at the same time, also covered the island with traps and dangerous Rahi to prevent Miserix's escape or rescue. In preparation for Mata Nui's awakening, Toa Nuva Tahu and Kopaka later quelled a series of volcanoes on the island. Later, the Order of Mata Nui sent a team led by probationary member Brutaka to free Miserix. After encountering and overcoming many traps, the team eventually succeeded in their mission and escaped on the back of Miserix in a dragon-like form by destroying half of the mountain Miserix was imprisoned in.

Toa Mahri Jaller, Hahli and Nuparu used the Heart of the Visorak to lead the Visorak to the island, hoping to trap them in an eruption. However, one of Miserix's rescue team, Takadox, left them stranded on the island with the spiders by hypnotizing them and stealing their boat. The Toa managed to escape though when Teridax freed Jaller from his trance. The Visorak horde was then wiped from existence by the volcano shortly afterwards.

One of the islands contains a pool of green and black energy, where the Great Spirit Mata Nui created the Makuta species. This island was eventually populated by Matoran, who were later driven out by Rahkshi acting on the order of the Brotherhood of Makuta, who turned the island into a staging area for an assault on the Southern Continent. Two members of the Order of Mata Nui, Axonn and Brutaka, later arrived on the island to destroy the pool, bringing along the amassed armies of the Skakdi warlords from Zakaz to combat the Brotherhood's forces. When Axonn and Brutaka investigated the pool on the island, the pair fell in and Brutaka absorbed a large amount of and formed a mind-link with the sapient energy, receiving many new powers. The Skakdi, meanwhile, eventually won against the Rahkshi forces.

Several of the islands were also conquered by the Visorak at some point in time. One of the islands was liberated by Toa Lesovikk whilst he was exploring the area. Another of these islands was the homeland of the Tahtorak and of Keetongu's species. Here, Keetongu's species used Tahtorak as mounts before they were wiped out by the Visorak. Keetongu himself managed to escape to Metru Nui.

The home island of the species of Order of Mata Nui members Botar and Botar's replacement is also located here.

After a confrontation with Teridax beneath Metru Nui when the Makuta had taken over the body of the Great Spirit, Teridax teleported Axonn, Brutaka and Keetongu to separate southern islands. Axonn and Brutaka quickly escaped back to Metru Nui using Brutaka's newly-gained Makuta teleportation power, leaving Keetongu behind.

A large number of Rahkshi and an army of Skakdi traveled to the southernmost part of the Southern Islands, as well as some Toa who followed them, when a hatch to Bara Magna was opened. The Rahkshi and Skakdi exited the Southern Islands immediately, soon followed by the Toa.

After Teridax's death and mass evacuation of the Matoran Universe, the Southern Islands, along with all other locations, were dismantled.[2][3]

Landscape

Due to the various amounts of islands, the landscape of the chain varies from location to location. They are generally barren, with few amounts of species living on any given island.
