The BIONICLE line produced by LEGO is based on the physical medium of LEGO Sets. The line was originally part of LEGO's TECHNIC subset before branching out to become its own theme.
2001
History
When released, the 2001 sets established a pattern that would later be adhered to by most future waves. Six small sets, generally marketed as "impulse buys", featuring the Turaga were released. They accompanied the six medium sized sets representing the Toa, which were released in canisters (a variation of which which all medium-sized sets would be released in for BIONICLE's first generation). In the United States, the inaugural wave was released in July of 2001, though European territories saw an earlier release in January.
The canisters sets were built around geared action features, for heavy play purposes, and came with unique Kanohi masks that affixed to the face pieces.
Alongside the Toa and Turaga, large boxed sets called Rahi were released. These Rahi had intensive Technic builds, and action features based on levers. These action features were focused around knocking off the Kanohi masks worn by the Rahi, Turaga and Toa. Kanohi mask packs, which contained different colorations of the Kanohi masks, were also made available.
Later on in the year, in September, fast-food restaurant chain McDonald's released six "Tohunga" character sets in their Happy Meals. Each Tohunga came with a Kanohi and a Disk, which could be thrown by pulling back on the arm (a similar action feature to BIONICLE's predecessor, the Throwbots).
Four of the Turaga sets were also released as a promotional sets by Japanese candy maker Kabaya.

For its second year, BIONICLE began by releasing the villains in canister sets: the Bohrok swarm. Each of the six sets came packaged with a random Krana, one of eight shapes available in a different color for each set. The Bohrok were designed with a head snapping feature, intended to be used with the previous year's Toa Mata sets to knock their masks off, while the head also contained the Bohrok's weak point, the removable Krana. Each Bohrok set also included a plastic clip which could be attached to the backsides of the set and plugged into the lid of the canister, simulating the Bohrok in a hibernation state.
The smaller sets for the year, released in the winter alongside the Bohrok, were the Bohrok Va. Each also contained one of the eight random Krana shapes, in six new colors.
Collectible packages returned as well, with gold and silver variants of the Kanohi from 2001 being packaged in with random Krana.
In the summer of 2002, six more canister sets were released: the Toa Nuva, upgraded forms of the Toa Mata, with the same arm swinging features and mask attachments as the previous Toa. The masks were new shapes, called the Kanohi Nuva. The summer also saw the release of three larger sets, the Boxor, the Exo-Toa, and the Bahrag. All included action features compatible with previously released sets, and the two Bahrag also included standalone action features unique to the set.
2002 was BIONICLE's most successful year in terms of sales, and was also LEGO's top-selling product theme.

Continuing the winter/summer divide established in 2002, the next year introduced two waves of villains for the Toa Nuva to face. Capitalizing on the success of the Bohrok, six upgraded versions were released, the Bohrok-Kal. The Kal utilized all of the same features of the Bohrok, with new silver armor, and also contained new colors of the collectible Krana, called the Krana-Kal. In addition to the new collectibles, special variations existed that were randomly included in Kal sets; 5000 "White Metal Krana-Kal" and seventy-two "Sterling Silver Krana-Kal" were released through this method, and each came numbered for authentication.
The six small sets released featured upgraded versions of the Matoran characters; instead of the previous disc-throwing function, these six contained Kolhii staffs and pucks, and had geared torsos to recreate the hockey-like game.
The summer wave featured the villainous Rahkshi, who possessed geared arms to swing staffs, and had the most articulation of sets at the time. Introduced with the Rahkshi were the collectible Kraata, which had over 250 different color variations. The Rahkshi were re-released near the end of 2003 with specially colored "Shadow Kraata" replacing their normal ones.
Four large box sets were also released alongside the Rahkshi. Unlike the previous large sets, which only featured alternate models, the 2003 large sets featured combiner models; one of these combiner models, Takutanuva, would later be released as its own set in two different versions, one with an exclusive mask included.

History
The winter wave of 2004 featured the first new team of Toa characters since the original six from 2001; these Toa were in fact the Turaga characters from 2001, who revealed their past in a flashback for the year. These Toa possessed upgraded articulation and more secure Kanohi, but retained gear action features. The canisters they came in also included tops that could combine with one another to create Matoran Spheres.
The small sets were six more Matoran, many of whom had been featured previously in non-set media such as the Mata Nui Online Games. The collectibles introduced for the year were the Kanoka, disks shot from a squeeze trigger. The disks mold was the same as the one featured in the 2001 Tohunga sets, which was previously introduced in BIONICLE's predecessor, the Slizers/Throwbots. The disks themselves came in the same shape and glow-in-the-dark color, but had unique varieties of printing. Each Matoran carried a disk launcher and came with one disk.
Mentioned in the winter wave were the Vahki robots, law enforcers that acted as antagonists to the heroes. The Vahki were released in the summer wave, and had geared arms and disk-shooting mouths. Towards the end of the year the Vahki were re-released, replacing the standard Kanoka disks with a Disk of Time and a gold colored variant of the Kanohi Vahi.
Also released in the summer, though seen earlier in the years various media, were three large sets: Nidhiki, Krekka, and Turaga Dume and Nivawk. The three could combine to make one "Ultimate Dume" set, which was later released as a standalone special edition item, revealed to be an iteration of Makuta from the previous year.
A special movie tie-in set, Lhikan & Kikanalo was released as well.

The 2005 year featured the traditional waves of villains and heroes. However, the release dates for each varied by region; in North American territories the Toa Hordika were the first sets released in the winter. In European and Asian countries, the Visorak were released first. The small sets for the year were the Rahaga, released at the beginning of the year.
The larger sets were still released in the summer, alongside a new type of BIONICLE set: playsets, which used more traditional LEGO System building with bricks and studs. Each playset contained a variety of minifigures based on the Toa Hordika and the Visorak, as well as larger Technic-built characters. A Target-exclusive[citation needed] playset was also released, though the scene depicted does not appear anywhere in the canon.
An exclusive combiner set depicting the character Voporak was also released toward the end of the year. Additionally, two exclusive Toa sets (the original forms of two of the Rahaga, Norik and Iruini) were made available; only Norik was released in the United States as an inclusion in a special combo pack, while both Toa were sold individually in other countries.
All sets (excluding one of the playsets) utilized the new action feature of the year, Rhotuka spinners, which were small tops that could be launched through the air after pulling a ripcord. Packs of spinners were sold separately as well, with colors of spinners not available in sets, though they marked the shift away from "collectibles" to ammunition reloads.

2006 opened with the six Piraka, murderous thieves posing as Toa. The Piraka possessed no specific geared action feature, a departure from previous canister waves, and instead came with light-up eyes, dual weapons, and rubber spines covering glow-in-the-dark skulls. All six bore Zamor Launchers, which fired spherical ammunition pieces when pressed.
After being absent for the previous year, Matoran characters made a return; these Matoran had varying and unique builds, explained as alterations made by the overlord Karzahni. The six characters were the Voya Nui Resistance Team, fighting against the Piraka who had enslaved the rest of the population of Voya Nui. Unlike the small sets of the previous wave, these Matoran did not come with an action feature.
The summer wave brought back Toa figures, absent for over a year. The Toa Inika canisters were less spherical in shape than any previous wave, designed to advertise their light-up weapons and Zamor ammunition. Like the Hordika, the Inika utilized non-traditional Kanohi masks, large rubber pieces covering a blended green and white head.
Debuting in the summer (though released earlier in some parts of the world) were also the large boxed sets, marketed as "Titans". Axonn and Brutaka, members of the Order of Mata Nui, and Vezon & Fenrakk, a Piraka defector guarding the Mask of Life sought by all of the characters, each introduced a new piston-based style of building, and included Kanohi masks compatible with previous Toa.
There were also several special edition sets released: the standalone Umbra, guardian of the Mask of Life; the three titan combiner Vezon & Kardas, containing a modified Vezon and transformed Fenrakk (using parts from Axonn and Brutaka); and Irnakk, a combiner set of three Piraka (Thok, Vezok, and Reidak) that also included unique gold elements, who was released in between the main waves.
Playsets also made a return, with updated poseable minifigures and action features. Like the previous year, one of the playsets depicted a non-canon scene.

Set near the underwater realm of Mahri Nui in the Endless Ocean, 2007 utilized an aquatic motif for its sets. Like the previous year, the first wave consisted of the year's villains, this time the mutated Barraki warlords, who bore fearsome visages of sea creatures. The Barraki each carried a Squid Launcher for launching the rubbery Sea Squids, which also came in accessory packs.
Only four small sets were released for 2007: two Matoran, Dekar and Defilak, and two Rahi, the Hydruka Morak and Thulox. These four did not utilize the Squid Launchers, but instead possessed rebranded Zamor Launchers known as Air Launchers.
An exclusive titan set was released after the winter wave, depicting the character Nocturn and using special glow-in-the-dark pieces as well as a Squid Launcher.
After much speculation[citation needed], the summer canister sets were revealed to be the Toa Mahri, transformed versions of the Toa Inika. These Toa came in cardboard packaging with a plastic ring shell, a further departure from the typical canister design. The sets featured the return of Kanohi masks and came with a new type of projectile launcher, the Cordak Blaster.
The Titan sets for 2007 were Hydraxon, Maxilos & Spinax, and Gadunka; the former two both came equipped with Cordak Blasters, while the latter was a Rahi set that carried a Squid Launcher.
Two special edition large sets were also released in the summer; the first, after being outed by a Toys R Us retailer catalog[citation needed], was the Karzahni set, which included the Karzahni character (carrying a squid launcher), two Matoran (Sarda and Idris) and an Underwater Trap, which utilized a spring-loaded action feature. The second was Toa Lesovikk, riding a Sea Sled armed with a Cordak Blaster and featuring fold-out legs.
Playsets returned for a final year; there was no exclusive set as in previous years, and two of the three sets depicted scenes that did not occur within the story, though the Toa Terrain Crawler was heavily featured both in the books and comics, as well as the majority of the promotional media for 2007.

Small sets returned to their typical release schedule, with six Matoran corresponding to the six canister sets released for the winter. These Matoran used larger, prebuilt pieces, and utilized new head pieces for their Kanohi masks. Each Matoran could physically connect to one of the canister sets with an included pin piece, and their packaging mixed cardboard with plastic stalagmite/stalactite pieces.
Canister sets for the winter divided the heroes and villains unlike previous years, with three Toa (half of the returning Toa Nuva) facing off against three Makuta, all marketed under the same banner of "Phantoka". A large boxed set also saw wide release, depicting the "Toa" Ignika riding a Skyboard. All four Toa characters wielded a new projectile launcher, the Midak Skyblaster, while the Makuta were built with ribcages housing Tridax Pods and Shadow Leeches.
Two special-edition large box sets were also released in the winter, both villain characters: Icarax, with an geared action-feature arm, and Mutran & Vican, a Makuta with a Matoran that could attach like the canister and small sets did.
In the summer, the canister sets contained the same hero/villain divide, with the other three Toa Nuva returning to face off against three more Makuta, this time known collectively as "Mistika". The Makuta carried Nynrah Ghost Blasters, and the Toa Nuva carried similar Adaptive Weapons that had slight differences in-story but were functionally identical in the sets. These launchers had a pump that could be compressed to launch plastic dart ammunition. The Matoran sets were advertised to connect to the canister sets like in the winter wave, although with no story significance.
Though playsets did not make a return, the large summer sets depicted large battle vehicles, with a canister-sized figure riding a large machine of some kind. Three vehicles - Vultraz, a Matoran figure and his included Skyfighter, Jetrax T6, and Axalara T9 - each included a Midak Skyblaster; another set, Rockoh T3, came with a repurposed Zamor Launcher. The last of the wide-release Titan sets depicted Takanuva, in an enlarged form, and came with a Skyblaster and new Avohkii mold.
Two special-edition box sets were additionally released in the summer. The first was a brand-new model depicting the Matoran Mazeka and his turret vehicle the Swamp Strider, which utilized a Zamor Launcher with multiple clips of ammunition. The second was a recolor of the Jetrax T6 set, with yellow elements replacing the blue and silver ones.
A small promotional set also was included in the LEGO Magazine's "Brickmaster" initiative, featuring the Rahi Klakk.

Promoted as a "soft reboot", 2009 introduced a new setting and new aesthetic for the sets. The small sets, the Agori, featured a similar building style to the previous year's Matoran, as well as using the same type of packaging. The canisters for the winter wave were the Glatorian; as opposed to typical heroes and villains, Glatorian were said to be freelance warriors, pledging their allegiance to the highest bidder. Each Glatorian carried a Thornax Launcher, which fired the spiky Thornax pieces when squeezed, and did not wear Kanohi but rather helmets. Every wide-release set of the entire year came included with a special counter piece for playing an action game, which involved shooting an opposing character to decrease their hit points.
Following the previous year's example of including titans in the initial wave, 2009 saw the release of two large box sets, the scavenging villain and his steed Fero & Skirmix, and the year's primary antagonist Tuma.
In the summer, six more Glatorian canister sets were released, under the sub-brand of "Legends". The Glatorian Legends all came with a Thornax Launcher and hit counter for the game.
The large sets for the summer were, like the previous year, larger vehicles with Agori or Glatorian riders. Five vehicles were released in all. A special-edition Toys 'R' Us titan set, an enlarged version of the "Toa" Mata Nui set, was also released, that included a specially colored Kanohi Ignika.
Another Brickmaster exclusive promotional special set was made available to subscribers of the program. This set depicted Click, a creature befriended by Mata Nui.

Late in 2009, it was revealed that BIONICLE had been cancelled, ending the line. However, a final series of six sets commemorating the entirety of the line was announced. Each set resembled a previously released character or set, and came packaged in canisters, though the piece count and style were closer to the small sets of 2008 and 2009.
Every set came with a specific piece of the Golden Armor, which could be attached to the Tahu set to replace his armor, weapons, and mask, creating the "Golden BIONICLE".

Five years after its cancellation, BIONICLE was announced to be returning at the 2014 New York Comic-Con. The new wave, released at the beginning of the year 2015, followed a similar structure to previous pre-cancellation BIONICLE waves, though it also took some influence from the Hero Factory line. A specially colored mask was also distributed at the New York Comic-Con, called the "Transparent Tahu Mask" (the mask would later be officially identified as the Mask of Fire).
Six small sets, the Protectors, were released. Each bore a six-shot Elemental Blaster, a new mask type that could be knocked off with a trigger, and were advertised to help "power up" their respective Toa allies. All six came with small Skull Spiders, antagonists that could be attached to the Protector's faces like their masks.
Though the new generation of BIONICLE is set in an entirely new continuity, the six Toa characters were designed and named after the original Toa Mata. Three of the Toa were of medium size, and three were large. Each utilized returning gear features, as well as dual-function weapons and pop-off masks. One medium-sized set also depicted the primary villain of the wave, the Lord of Skull Spiders. Every Toa came with a golden version of their respective masks, as well as a Skull Spider; the Lord of Skull Spiders did not include a Skull Spider, but the Golden Mask of Skull Spiders.
The summer wave, first revealed at the London Toy Fair in 2015, debuted the Skull villains, utilizing the same motif as the villains of the winter wave. Each villain, most of the medium-sized variety, comes with a skull-themed mask, and the wave also contains recolored versions of several of the Toa masks. The largest set, Mask Maker vs. Skull Grinder, contains a Protector-sized figure fighting against one of the Skull villains over the Mask of Creation, the first thing revealed of the new wave.
A promotional BIONICLE "Hero Pack", made available as a free gift-with-purchase, was released in March (February in several regions) and contained a Skull Spider, sticker sheet, booklets, and a unique transparent-orange Mask of Fire.
