When the Voya Nui region of the Southern Continent rocketed upwards to the surface of Aqua Magna during the Great Cataclysm, the Ring of Ice was formed. This location was home to such Rahi as Burnak, Gafna, and Manutri.[1] The Lagoon Entrance, a feature of the Ring of Ice, located on the eastern exterior shore of the island, represented the only safe passage onto the island. A Canyon Fortress was constructed nearby the entrance to monitor the comings and goings of beings, although it was rarely occupied.

During one of Garan's regular searches for fresh water, he witnessed a Toa Canister bobbing across the ring. The Onu-Matoran hid from sight as the sealed transport docked on the beach and Thok emerged. The Piraka caught sight of a Visorak shortly afterward and killed the Rahi using his powers. Five other canisters soon appeared all over the island as well, each bearing Piraka, and washed up onto the Ring.

At some point during the Piraka occupation, Reidak slipped and fell a considerable distance onto the Ring, although according to Kazi this simply aggravated the Piraka.

The six Toa Canisters containing Jaller, Hahli, Kongu, Hewkii, Nuparu and Matoro washed upon the shore of the Ring of Ice. Before they could exit, the Red Star struck Lightning against the transports, causing the six Matoran to become the Toa Inika.

The Toa Inika, after defeating Vezon and Kardas, raced north of Voya Nui toward the ice ring, attempting to keep up with the Mask of Life. The Ignika continued until hitting the water and sinking near Mahri Nui.

Since Voya Nui returned to its position on the Southern Continent, the Ring of Ice became the part of the continent.

When Teridax was killed in the Battle of Bara Magna, the Ring of Ice was severely damaged, and the Matoran evacuated to Spherus Magna. Later, the Ring of Ice, along with all other locations in the Matoran Universe, was dismantled.[2][3]
