"Axonn saw the gate advancing rapidly, threatening to envelop him. He couldn't see anything inside it, only deep darkness. He knew Brutaka's power — the gate might lead to someplace else on Voya Nui or any other island, or even to a different dimension entirely."
— Narrator, Inferno

The Kanohi Olmak was the Mask of Dimensional Gates.

History

Only two Kanohi Olmak are known to have existed in the Matoran Universe, both of which were created by Artakha.[1] One was given by the Order of Mata Nui to Brutaka.[2] It was later damaged by the Pit Mutagen, causing its portals to lead to unintended destinations. The mask was later destroyed by Makuta Teridax in the body of Mata Nui.

The second Kanohi Olmak had a variety of owners. Artakha arranged for the mask to be received by its first user, a member of Jovan's Toa Team.[3] The team used the mask to reach Karda Nui with the Kanohi Ignika.[4] This Toa was killed on the orders of a Makuta.[2] The Olmak was taken by the Order and used twice by Botar to imprison Toa Mangai Tuyet in a pocket dimension and replace her with a Tuyet from an alternate universe.[5] Afterwards, it was stolen by the Brotherhood of Makuta and used by Makuta Tridax to recruit an army of Shadow Takanuva.[6] It was later looted from the sub-basement of the Destral Fortress by Vezon, whose body absorbed the mask and its power when a portal landed him in the way of a wave of Energized Protodermis, destroying the Olmak.

Currently, no Kanohi Olmak exist in the main dimension.

Alternate Universes

Toa Empire Alternate Universe

In this alternate universe, Brutaka's Kanohi Olmak was held in the Coliseum's Hall of Masks after he was killed. The Tuyet of this universe fought with the prime universe's Takanuva over the mask, which the latter wanted to use to return home. In the battle, Takanuva got through one of its portals, but Tuyet was killed when the gateway closed on her midsection. The mask was lost in interdimensional space.

Powers

The Kanohi Olmak allowed its user to transport themselves and/or other targets to different dimensions or another location within their own via dimensional portals. The user of an Olmak can only create one portal at a time.[7] A Kanohi Olmak user could also form gateways that stayed open without their concentration, if they so wished. While achieving time travel with an Olmak was impossible, one could use it to travel to dimensions where time flowed faster or slower than in the original dimension. One could also have used a Kanohi Olmak to travel beyond the Matoran Universe.

When Brutaka's Olmak was damaged by Pit Mutagen, it continued to open portals on demand, however, the wearer had virtually no control over where they might lead.

Example Usage

Takanuva emerging from a portal created by a Kanohi Olmak

Brutaka used his Kanohi Olmak to transport a Doom Viper into a pool of lava in an alternate universe in Power Play.
