Kewa, or Goko-Kahu, are vulture-like[3] Rahi.

History

The Kewa species, a sub-species of the Gukko,[4] was created by the Makuta using Viruses and Liquid Protodermis to be one of the Rahi to inhabit the Matoran Universe.[5]

Kewa Bird Riding

When the Great Cataclysm brought about the creation of the island of Mata Nui, many Kewa migrated there and established themselves in Le-Wahi. In the wild, they shared their nests with their relative, the Taku.[6] The Le-Matoran of Le-Koro found them easy to tame, and they could summon the trained birds by using Flutes.[3] Tamed Kewa in Le-Koro lived in woven birdhouses and were often ridden as mounts in the Gukko Bird Force.[7]

Kewa Bird Riding also became a popular sport in Le-Koro. Riding on a Kewa, the player would attempt knock their opponents off of the Kewa that they are riding while attempting to stay on their own.[6] Turaga Matau himself was a famed Kewa Rider.[7]

When the wandering Av-Matoran Takua was tasked with the rescue of Turaga Matau, the Matoran discovered that the Turaga was trapped in a Kewa nest.[6] Later, he made use of a Kewa bird he called with a Flute, who would transport him to various parts of Mata Nui.[7]

When the Bohrok swarms were prematurely awakened, the high jungle canopy territories of the wild Kewa were invaded by displaced Fikou.[8]

The Kewa later returned to the Matoran Universe after the Bohrok swarms destroyed Mata Nui.[9]

After the Great Spirit Robot was critically damaged in the Battle of Bara Magna, many Kewa left the Matoran Universe and immigrated to Spherus Magna.[1]

Abilities and Traits

Kewa are smaller than their Kahu cousins, but larger than the aquatic Taku. Unlike the Taku, Kewa are scavengers.[3] Kewa are known to carry objects as heavy as small boulders.[6]

Set Information

Concept art of a Kewa

The Kewa was released as part of the 10023 BIONICLE Master Builder Set. The orange, red, and gray Kewa used sixty-two of the set's 102 parts and featured a flapping action when a gear on its back was turned.

Trivia

  • The Kewa's name was for many years not considered a part of the BIONICLE canon, having been replaced by the Gukko because of a legal conflict with The LEGO Group using Māori words (Kewa and Goko-Kahu).[10] For example, the Gukko that appears in BIONICLE: Mask of Light was originally identified as a Kewa in the film's script.[11] It was later placed back into canon as a sub-species of Gukko.[4]
  • Although BIONICLE.com described the Kewa as a vulture, Quest for the Toa refers to the Kewa as an eagle.
  • In promotional art and the Kewa's instruction manual, the Rahi is portrayed facing backwards.
