Biography

Keetongu as seen in Web of Shadows

Keetongu's species was created by Makuta using viruses and Liquid Protodermis.[5]

Keetongu hailed from a land in the Southern Islands of the Matoran Universe. There, Keetongu's species coexisted with Tahtorak and used them as steeds.[6] At some point, Visorak lead by Sidorak invaded Keetongu's island and killed all other members of Keetongu's species.[7] Keetongu migrated to Metru Nui, where he went unnoticed for centuries. At some point a cryptic tablet was placed in the Great Temple that hinted at his location.[8]

Although Keetongu was unheard of on Metru Nui, he was known to the populations of other lands. According to legend, Keetongu could cleanse beings of Hordika Venom and even the Brotherhood of Makuta would tremble at his approach.[9] Keetongu's eye also allowed him to see the good and evil in beings, and he would only cure those whom he deemed noble of heart. Many who heard these stories, such as Iruini, thought they were merely myth.[4][10]

During the Great Rescue, the Rahaga told the Toa Hordika about the legend of Keetongu. The two groups uncovered the tablet in the Great Temple and, following its clues, discovered Keetongu in his hideaway. The Rahi was hesitant to cure the Toa Hordika outright and to bring back their defector Vakama. However, he felt his visitors had a worthy cause, so he offered to help them drive the Visorak from Metru Nui. During the Battle of Metru Nui, Keetongu scaled the side of the Coliseum to fight Sidorak and Roodaka. While Keetongu climbed, Sidorak fired several blasts from his Herding Blade at the Rahi, but he continuously missed. Roodaka then fired a pair of blasts from her Catcher Claws that destroyed Keetongu's claw tool and knocked him off the wall of the Coliseum. The attack left Keetongu more angry than hurt; after Roodaka convinced Sidorak to go down and check on the fallen Rahi, Keetongu got to his feet and killed Sidorak, whom Roodaka abandoned to his fate. After the battle, Keetongu felt that the Toa Hordika were worthy of his power, so he changed them back into Toa Metru. He later helped the Toa and Rahaga load some Matoran Spheres into airships.[11][8]

When Vakama returned to Metru Nui to retrieve the Vahi, Keetongu sensed the presence of Makuta Teridax. The Rahi followed Vakama and Teridax to Ga-Metru and fought the Makuta outside the Great Temple. During this duel, Teridax sealed Keetongu's Rhotuka spinner compartment shut and knocked the Rahi unconscious. Keetongu survived thanks to an explosion (caused by Vakama's battle with Sentrakh) that knocked Teridax away.[12] The battle left Keetongu badly injured, but he recovered.[4]

Keetongu chose to stay in Metru Nui while the Toa Metru—now Turaga—and the Matoran of Metru Nui lived on the island of Mata Nui. During this time, he helped rebuild the city.[citation needed] About 500 years after the Matoran left, Keetongu sensed a band of Visorak approaching Metru Nui. He warned Norik before rushing to confront them. Keetongu took on twenty Visorak at once and was nearing defeat before the Rahaga and Turaga Dume joined him. The Rahaga and Dume fended off the Visorak for a few minutes. Then Keetongu recovered and released the power he had absorbed from the Visorak's spinners, defeating a great deal of the spiders. The city's caretakers then returned to the Coliseum.[13] Keetongu eventually left Metru Nui to help victims of the Visorak on other islands.[4][14][15]

Keetongu helped the Order of Mata Nui in their war against the Brotherhood of Makuta after Helryx promised him that the Visorak would be eliminated. He went with Helryx to the island of Nynrah, and from there he accompanied the Order leader to another island just north of his homeland. On this island they discovered the Energized Protodermis Entity. After a confrontation, the entity unleashed a wave of itself that threatened to transform or destroy the pair.[16] Keetongu and Helryx were saved when Vezon accidentally created a portal behind them.[17] The portal transported the two beings to the Core Processor, where they met the Toa Hagah and Makuta Miserix, and shortly thereafter, Axonn and Brutaka.[18] The group heard Teridax speaking to them, and the Makuta shattered Brutaka's Olmak and appeared to slay Zaktan. Miserix tried to attack Teridax, but he was stopped by Brutaka, who explained that they were within the mind of Mata Nui himself. After Teridax trapped Miserix in a powerful illusion, he banished Keetongu, Brutaka and Axonn to the Southern Islands.[19] Keetongu went his own way, eventually discovering that Makuta had recreated the Visorak horde and combatting them.[20][21]

When the universe was damaged and Teridax was killed by Mata Nui, Keetongu immigrated to Spherus Magna, along with other surviving denizens of the Matoran Universe.[1][2]

Abilities and Traits

Like any member of his species, Keetongu can produce any anti-venom or antidote as long as he is familiar with the relevant toxin.[3] He has knowledge of many antidotes, including one to cure Hordika Venom. However, he cannot cure those who have been fully mutated.[22] He was also unable to cure other mutations,[23] such as the Rahaga who had been mutated by Roodaka's Rhotuka spinner.[24][25][26][27][28]

Keetongu in combat

Keetongu's large eye is actually not his true eye; he has a real pair of eyes hidden behind it.[7] He can use the fake eye to see the good and evil of a creature, and therefore judge whether or not they are worthy of his allegiance and power.[4] Keetongu is guided more by empathy than by a strict moral code; he perceives good and evil by distinguishing between the emotions associated with each.[29] Additionally, as a Rahi, Keetongu does not possess an inner light balance.[30] If he meets a being of darkness, Keetongu will usually attack them on sight, for his goodly nature is provoked to rage.[31] He also hates the Visorak for killing his species[29] and has spent much time helping the horde's victims.

Keetongu possesses tremendous strength, rivaling that of a Makuta.[32] Keetongu is extremely durable as well, able to survive a fall from near the top of the Coliseum.[8]

Tools

Keetongu wields Whirling Shields that can absorb force used against him. Keetongu's armor can channel that force into a Rhotuka, which he can then fire back at his opponent.[33][4] His other main offensive weapon is a blade-like claw tool that he can use as a weapon or to assist in climbing.[11] Keetongu also channels his healing powers through this blade claw.[4] Roodaka damaged Keetongu's blade claw with a shadow blast,[11] but it was repaired.[12] Teridax later welded Keetongu's Rhotuka launcher to his armor,[12] but this has since been undone.[13]

The Keetongu set

8755 Keetongu was released in mid-2005. The set includes a bright red Rhotuka spinner. A lock on Keetongu's chest armor allows one to open his chest cavity and fire a Rhotuka spinner as in the story. His whirling shields can be spun with an axle on his right arm, and they expand as they spin and contract when they become still. The set contains 201 pieces that can be combined with the pieces of 8761 Roodaka to create the Shadowed One, the pieces of 8756 Sidorak to create Sentrakh, or the pieces of both Sidorak and Roodaka to create Voporak.

Quotes

— Roodaka, Web of Shadows

"Keetongu cannot start a battle on your behalf, but he can aid those loyal to the Three Virtues. In fact, doing so is his sworn Duty."
Rahaga Norik, Web of Shadows
