Iden

Matoro's Organic Great Iden
Kanohi
Title Mask of Spirit
Powers Astral Projection
Bearers Matoro (formerly)
Pronunciation EYE-den[1]

The Kanohi Iden is the Mask of Spirit. It allows its user to temporarily release their spirit from their body. While released, their spirit can move at great speeds and through obstacles, and it can inhabit other living, spiritless biomechanical bodies[2] or self-powered robots,[3] but not objects[4] or non-protodermic beings like Glatorian.[5] Their original body will become limp, as there is nothing inhabiting it, leaving it defenseless.[1] An Iden user can be seen by and communicate with those who wear the Kanohi Elda or Kanohi Rode,[6][7] appearing as a ghost to them.[8] A Suletu user cannot since telepathy can only read physical minds.[9][10][11] However, a user that already had an innate telepathic ability, such as a Makuta, could still use it in their spirit form.[12]

While released, the user's spirit cannot access any of their elemental powers, because the use of those powers requires a union of the spirit and the body. If the user's body is killed, their spirit will eventually fade away, as they have no body to return to.[13] If the user's Iden is destroyed or removed, the user's spirit will be forced back into their body.[14]

Multiple Iden users have the ability to swap bodies by sending their spirits into each other's spiritless bodies.[15][16] A Toa's powers are tied to their spirit, however, not their body, so if a Kanohi Iden-using Toa goes into another body, the body will have the spirit's Elemental Powers.[17] However, using elemental powers may be dangerous if the body is not intended to channel elemental powers.[18]

Example Usage

Matoro used his Kanohi Iden to monitor Hahli's progress as she attempted to retrieve the Kanohi Ignika while underwater in Inferno.

  • Matoro - Formerly; changed into an organic Great version when he became a Toa Inika

Trivia

  • The reason why BIONICLE author Greg Farshtey did not want Matoro to have Elemental Powers in the story when he released his spirit is because it would give him an unfair advantage, since Matoro could attack beings who could not sense him.[19]
  • Greg Farshtey's favorite Inika mask is the Iden.[20]
