Hahli is the Toa Mahri of Water and the former Toa Inika of Water. A shy and diligent Ga-Matoran from Metru Nui, Hahli briefly served as the Chronicler of the island of Mata Nui. Under Jaller's leadership, she and four other Matoran mounted a rescue mission to Voya Nui and became Toa.

Biography

Matoran

Metru Nui

In Ga-Metru, Hahli was a student[4] and was a capable translator.[5] She was captured by the Vahki and put into a Matoran Sphere, as ordered by Makuta Teridax, disguised as Turaga Dume. The Toa Metru rescued the Matoran of Metru Nui and transported them to the island of Mata Nui.[6][7]

Mata Nui

Hahli's size and physical strength were reduced as a consequence of her imprisonment in a Matoran Sphere. Instructed by Nokama, she helped in the construction of Ga-Koro from pieces of the Airships which had been used to take the Matoran to Mata Nui.[8]

Bohrok Invasion

In Ga-Koro, Hahli worked as an assistant flax maker under Amaya[9] until the Pahrak attacked Ga-Koro in the Bohrok Invasion. She, Kotu and Macku helped dismantle the causeways so that the Pahrak could not reach the village. However, this was soon thwarted when the Bohrok destroyed the Kaukau statue above Naho Falls and used the debris to cross the water.[10] By daybreak, the village was overrun, and Hahli was forced to make a last stand with the rest of the Matoran, wielding a fishing stick as a weapon.[11] At the last minute, blinding light erupted from the Ga-Suva, marking the defeat of the Bahrag and causing the Pahrak to collapse in lifeless heaps. After the struggle, Hahli became close with Jaller, Captain of the Guard, alongside whom she had fought.[12]

When Gali's Nuva Symbol was stolen by the Bohrok-Kal, Hahli saw the Toa of Water summon a tidal wave, only for her to suddenly lose her powers. Hahli immediately set off to find Nokama and told the Turaga what had happened.[13]

After the defeat of the Bohrok-Kal, Hahli, along with the rest of the population of Mata Nui, was rebuilt into a stronger, larger form.[14]

Kolhii Tournament
Hahli in Mask of Light

One night, a storm ravaged Ga-Koro, and Hahli had to repair the bridge to the rest of Ga-Koro from the lily pad that her and Amaya's huts on the outer edge of the village. She performed errands for the other Ga-Matoran and spoke with Nixie, who showed her a formula to find coordinates based on the six Toa.[9] Nokama, recently returned from a Turaga meeting, announced the villages would hold a kolhii tournament, and chose Hahli over Kotu to play for Ga-Koro, with Macku as her defense player. While talking with the other Ga-Matoran, Hahli received the Charm from Shasa representing Unity, the Speed Charm from Kai, and the Purity Charm from Marka. Pelagia took Hahli into Naho Bay to swim with a Takea to improve her Speed. When Onepu and Taipu came to play the Ga-Matoran, Hahli used her Speed to get the better of the team.[15] The Onu-Matoran invited her to Onu-Koro, where she explored the Marn Tunnels. After diving in the now flooded Great Mine to recover mining equipment, she helped Azibo recover his Sluice, and he gave Hahli the Prosperity Charm in return. Taipu trained Hahli in the Onu-Matoran discipline of Stamina and gave her its Charm. Hahli also met Nuparu, who gave her fitness check-ups.[16]

Hahli had to go to Ko-Koro for the approaching kolhii match. While exploring, she met Jaatikko and Toudo, who gave her the Destiny Charm and Peace Charm, respectively. Hahli traversed The Drifts and found Kantai, who trained her in Willpower and gave her its Charm. Using Willpower and Stamina, Hahli defeated Matoro and Kopeke in the match.[17] Arriving in Le-Koro, Hahli was greeted by Kongu and Matau and found the Faith Charm. During training in Accuracy with Bamboo Disks under Tamaru, Hahli found the Accuracy Charm. Using her improved Accuracy, Hahli won the match against Kongu and Tamaru, and left for Po-Koro.[18] In Po-Koro, she learned about Creation from Hewkii and found its Charm. She practiced in Strategy with Golyo by herding Mahi and also found its Charm. In the subsequent match, she used her new skills to defeat Hafu and Hewkii.[19] Leaving the village, she travelled to Ta-Koro to play Jaller and Takua, and Jaller directed her to Keahi to train in Strength. After learning about the last Principle of Courage from Kapura, she used her full knowledge of the Skills and Principles to defeat Ta-Koro, securing a spot in the Championship.[20]

In the Championship, the Ga-Koro team played against Po-Koro and Ta-Koro at the Ta-Koro Kolhii Stadium, and Hahli and Macku won narrowly. At the end of the game, the Mask of Light slipped out of Jaller's bag, leading the Turaga to proclaim Jaller the herald of the Seventh Toa and set him upon a quest.[21][22] Hahli wanted to speak to Jaller, but he had to leave quickly on his quest. Trying to find him, she found the Courage Charm in Jaller's home and the Duty Charm at the Wall of History. She returned to Ga-Koro and looked at the formula Nixie had showed her. Because of the announcement of the Seventh Toa, she used seven as the base number instead six, calculating a coordinate in Naho Bay. Pelagia sailed her to the coordinate, and Hahli found the Lost Reef in the ocean She located the Crystal of Purity deep in the ocean, and unlocked its temple with the Charms. After showing the Crystal to Nixie, Hahli went to find the other temples. In Onu-Koro, Hahli swam again in the Great Mine, diving to the bottom to find the Secret Cave. Unlocking it, she retrieved the Crystal of Prosperity and swam back up to the surface. The Drifts contained the Ko-Koro Ruins, a grouping of three statues Hahli unlocked to reveal another Crystal. In Le-Wahi, the highest tree-top contained the Le-Koro Ruins, and using Charms she retrieved the Crystal of Faith. The Po-Koro Ruins was a statue half covered in sand in Po-Wahi, that Hahli entered to retrieve the Crystal of Creation. With five Crystals, Hahli returned to Ta-Koro to look for the final Temple, Charm, and Crystal.[23]

Arrival of the Rahkshi
Hahli unlocking the Crystal's secret

Three Rahkshi suddenly attacked Ta-Koro, but Hahli was able to raise the bridge so the Matoran could escape.[21][22] Confronted by Lerahk, she fled Ta-Koro as it was destroyed and ran into Ta-Wahi. Hahli stumbled upon the Ta-Koro Ruins and found Courage's Charm. Using it to enter the temple, she found the last Crystal. Wandering the Ta-Wahi Beach, Hahli found the Great Telescope and a carving of The Legend of Mata Nui. Noticing slots in the carving, Hahli inserted the Crystals, and was teleported to Kini-Nui where she watched as three more Rahkshi flew overhead.[23]

When Jaller died and Takua transformed into Takanuva, Hahli mourned Jaller deeply. Once the Toa built the Ussanui, she placed his mask upon the helm to lead Takanuva to victory and a new light. She then hid in the Ussanui and traveled with Takanuva into Mangaia for his conflict with Makuta Teridax. There, Takanuva sent her to bring the other Turaga and Toa Nuva from the surface. This incited quarreling among the islanders, whom Hahli quieted with a hopeful speech about Jaller and the Three Virtues. After Takanuva defeated Teridax and transformed with him into Takutanuva, he lifted the gate for the Matoran. When Hahli ran by with Jaller's mask, Takutanuva stopped her and gave up part of his life force to bring Jaller back to life. Takutanuva then perished, and Takanuva emerged from the rubble of the gate.[21][22]

Hahli was given the position of Chronicler by Nokama,[23] and was one of a handful of Matoran who witnessed the Turaga tell the tales of their adventures as Toa Metru and Toa Hordika, recording the legends in her position as Chronicler.[24] Along with the other Matoran, she returned to Metru Nui by Boat and began work repairing the defunct city. She was later chosen by Jaller to accompany him, Matoro, Nuparu, Hewkii, and Kongu to Voya Nui to save the Toa Nuva and prevent Mata Nui from dying.[25]

The six Matoran and Takanuva began their journey to Voya Nui. They traveled through an Underwater Chute and the Tunnel of Darkness, but then encountered an arch that only the Matoran could pass, as it repelled beings of light like Takanuva. After a long farewell, they moved on. They then arrived in the realm of Karzahni, where its ruler took Hahli's mask and replaced it with another. Karzahni ordered Hahli to tell him about the outside world, as he knew of nothing outside his realm. After hours of story-telling, Hahli asked Karzahni to tell his story, which he did, relating his creation alongside Artakha. Hahli managed to escape with her friends in Toa Canisters, which brought them to Voya Nui. On their arrival to Voya Nui, Hahli was struck by a bolt from the Red Star, transforming into a Toa Inika.[26]

Toa Inika

After a brief discussion in a cave, the Toa Inika began their quest to find the missing Toa Nuva. They encountered the Piraka Vezok, and battled against the rogue Dark Hunter. After winning, the Toa Inika met with the Matoran Resistance, where they split up into three groups. Hahli joined Jaller, Dalu, and Piruk to free a group of enslaved Matoran using Zamor Spheres filled with Energized Protodermis.[27]

Toa Inika Hahli

Hahli later reunited with the other Toa Inika, and battled against the Piraka. Thok dazed her using his spellbinder vision and pinned her with stone that had been given life, causing Matoro to come to her rescue; however, Hahli broke free from her bonds.[28] Later, Hakann and Thok used a special Zamor Sphere to absorb the powers of Brutaka, gifting them with immense power. The two Piraka quickly defeated the Toa and the other Piraka and began their search for the Kanohi Ignika. The Piraka and the Toa Inika formed a brief alliance, followed the two, and defeated them, but were knocked unconscious in the process.[27]

By the time Hahli and the Toa Inika revived, the Piraka had already begun to journey down the 777 Stairs. The Toa Inika followed. On their journey, they came across challenges such as Umbra and the Chamber of Death, where Matoro seemingly died, leaving Hahli distraught. Eventually, they reached the Chamber of Life, where they fought against Vezon and Fenrakk. The Toa Inika managed to push the pair into a pool of lava, but the couple re-emerged, unharmed, with Fenrakk transformed into Kardas. The Toa fought against the duo once more, and used a Zamor Sphere created by Axonn to defeat them.[29] After Vezon's defeat, Matoro pried the Mask of Life from his head, only to have it fly from his hands and plunge into the ocean. Hahli attempted to retrieve it, but failed and would have drowned had she not been rescued by a Matoran from Mahri Nui, who soon perished.[30] The Toa Inika met with the Toa Nuva, whom the Matoran Resistance had freed. It was agreed that the Toa Inika would continue the search for the Ignika, while the Nuva would depart to prepare the universe for Mata Nui's awakening.[29]

Hahli and the rest of the Toa Inika journeyed down the Cord. During their way, they battled against a group of Zyglak, and Hahli was briefly wounded.[31] When the 300 Foot Mutant Venom Eel began to squeeze the Cord, the Toa Inika swam out into the waters of the Pit to battle it. During the fight, the Kanohi Ignika unleashed a cry of help, transforming the Toa Inika into the Toa Mahri.[32]

Toa Mahri

Mahri Nui

Hahli as a Toa Mahri

The Toa Mahri managed to defeat the Venom Eel, and proceeded towards Mahri Nui. Upon arrival, they were attacked by the Matoran there, believing the Toa to be enemies. Hahli managed to convince the Matoran that they were Toa, and that they would not harm the Matoran there. While Matoro stayed behind, the other Toa Mahri proceeded to the Fields of Air, where they were asked to clear it of the Keras Crabs. When they reached the fields, the Toa confronted the Barraki, who imprisoned them in several sea caves. Hahli used her Kanohi Faxon to hypnotize the squid guarding her cave and escaped. Hahli joined Hewkii and Nuparu to explore the sea floor, where they came across a stash of Cordak Blasters that they shared with the other Toa Mahri.

The Toa Mahri returned to the city, only to be attacked by the Matoran again, as they believed them to be allies to the Barraki. Hahli bid Kongu to push Defilak into the sea and swam around him quickly to pull away his personal air bubble, then threw him back into Mahri Nui, claiming that if she wanted to harm him, he would already be dead. Defilak then named the team the Toa Mahri. Matoro soon arrived and introduced Maxilos as an ally. The Toa departed from the city again to continue their search.

While exploring, Hahli was attacked by Mantax. Using her Cordak Blaster, she fired at the Barraki and wounded him with her Protosteel Talons. While Mantax prepared to attack Hahli once more, she used her mask to camouflage herself. Believing she saw Mantax, she fired on him, only to find that his body was a decoy. Mantax then used his venom to paralyze her, but Hahli used her Faxon to counter-act the poison. She confronted Mantax and convinced him his fellow Barraki had betrayed him. The two came to a compromise, and Hahli was named the lieutenant of Mantax's army.[32]

Hahli attacks Hydraxon's replica

Hahli saw Hydraxon attempt to destroy the Ignika and used a riptide to disrupt his shot. She dueled Hydraxon, but in the conflict, Mantax stole the Ignika and began to drain Hahli's and Hydraxon's life force. He bid them tell the other Barraki to meet with him at the Razor Whale's Teeth and left with the mask.

Hahli rejoined the Toa Mahri and learned from Matoro that they must destroy the Cord, destroying Mahri Nui in the process. The Toa Mahri convinced the Matoran of Mahri Nui to journey up the Cord and return to Voya Nui. On the way, they were ambushed by the now-mutated Piraka. Avak used his prison power to imprison the Toa Mahri out of water, choking them, until Axonn knocked out both Piraka and Toa with an energy blast. After reviving, the Toa Mahri talked with Axonn, who took them to a cave holding the Toa Terrain Crawler. Hahli had misgivings about seeing a Rahi exploited in this manner, but the Toa Mahri still entered the Toa Terrain Crawler, which took them down to the waters of the Pit. Once in the Pit, the Toa Mahri split up. Hahli, Hewkii, and Nuparu spotted the Barraki battling Gadunka, who then attacked Hewkii. Hahli and Nuparu saved him and drove off Gadunka.

Hahli, Matoro, and Kongu in the Toa Terrain Crawler

The three Toa then reunited with their comrades, and prepared to destroy the Cord when Gadunka, the 300 Feet Mutant Venom Eel, and the Ancient Sea Behemoth appeared together to battle them. Hahli used her Faxon to become bio-luminescent, luring the Ancient Sea Behemoth into a trap made by Kongu. The Toa Mahri then destroyed the Cord, and followed Matoro, who had reclaimed the Ignika , with the Barraki and their armies right behind them. During their chase, the Toa Mahri each felt the impact of Mata Nui's death, and they decided that while Matoro made a final attempt to revive Mata Nui, the other Toa would hold off the Barraki and their armies. After an brief but emotional farewell, Hahli, Jaller, Hewkii, Nuparu, and Kongu turned and faced the Barraki, preparing to give up their lives for Mata Nui's life.

The Toa fought a desperate battle, with about 1,000 troops against each of the five Toa. Very soon, it became clear to the Toa that they would lose, and Jaller decided to release a Nova Blast, sacrificing the Toa and killing all their enemies so that Matoro could revive Mata Nui. However, while Jaller began channeling his powers, Matoro used the Ignika to revive Mata Nui. Knowing that he must die, he teleported the Toa Mahri back to Metru Nui and transformed them into amphibious beings.[33]

Metru Nui

In Metru Nui, Hahli and the others learned of Matoro's fate from Vakama. Hahli recounted their adventures to Kopeke, the new Chronicler, and attended a memorial of Matoro in the Coliseum.[33] In the absence of Takanuva, she and the other Toa Mahri became the defenders of Metru Nui. In doing so, they defeated and captured the Kardas Dragon. She and the other Toa Mahri, save for Jaller, went to search for Takanuva, but to no avail.[31]

When they returned, they encountered the Toa Hagah, who told them that they had come to destroy the Coliseum.[34] Both teams of Toa were soon locked in a ferocious battle, one that Hahli unintentionally ended when she blasted Kualus after he summoned a giant Rahi, disrupting his control and setting the beast on a rampage. Once the beast had been stopped, Hahli worked together with Gaaki to put out the resulting fires and then cooled the walls of a tunnel formed beneath the Coliseum by the combined efforts of the Toa of Fire and Stone of each team. Hahli, like Jaller, wished to accompany the Toa Hagah into the depths, but remained behind at the Toa Hagah's insistence, checking on Hewkii after he passed out from the effort of holding the Coliseum aloft and then lowering it back into place.[35] As the Toa Mahri left the Coliseum, Hahli noticed a golden crystal floating in mid-air that avoided her touch. A stranger appeared, telling her and the others about the Heart of the Visorak and that the Visorak horde would follow it anywhere. She bid them take the crystal to Artidax, and Jaller chose Hahli and Nuparu to accompany him there.[36]

Hahli, Jaller, and Nuparu sailed to Artidax, where they encountered Takadox, who revealed the Order of Mata Nui had set the island's volcano to explode. He then hypnotized Hahli and her two brothers and escaped with their boat, leaving them on the island with the Visorak.[36] Hahli was woken up from her trance by a fireball sent from Jaller to find they were surrounded by Visorak. They fought their way back to the sea and dove in just as the volcano erupted, wiping out the Visorak species. Hahli and her two comrades then began to swim back to Metru Nui.[37]

Upon arrival, they found a fortified Metru Nui under attack by the Brotherhood of Makuta. Quickly, the three Toa stormed through a group of Rahkshi and entered the city through a large breach in its walls. There, they found Turaga Vakama, who told them about his plan to drive off the invaders by awakening the Bohrok in the Archives. Hahli found Krakua and told him the plan, which he successfully carried out. Hahli then began to rouse the Silver Sea to wreck the Brotherhood's fleet, but a storm suddenly started beyond the city walls and tossed the fleet around. The Toa Nuva and Takanuva then returned to Metru Nui on the Rockoh T3, Jetrax T6, and Axalara T9. With the Toa Nuva's help, the Toa Mahri and the Order of Mata Nui drove the invaders back. Before the surviving invaders could depart, the great storm destroyed the Brotherhood ships encircling Metru Nui. The Toa Nuva confirmed that the Great Spirit Mata Nui had been awakened, and Turaga Dume and Vakama both declared the following day to be one of grand celebration inside the Coliseum. Hahli felt uneasy at the results of the battle, and felt that they should not have won so easily. Brushing her worries aside, Hahli departed to Ga-Metru, humming a song along the way.[38]

The next day, Hahli joined the Matoran and Toa in the celebrations. The event was interrupted by Teridax, who announced that he had taken over the body of the Great Spirit and had exiled Mata Nui into outer space.[39]

Teridax's Reign

Hahli aiding in the defense of Metru Nui

Hahli aided in the defense of Metru Nui by fighting off the invading Rahkshi of Heat Vision, which were under the supervision of the Skakdi warlord Nektann.[40][41]

Later, the five Toa Mahri were sent on a mission to determine whether other Skakdi warlords would ally with Teridax as Nektann had, and began to infiltrate a base on Zakaz. Hahli led the team through an underwater river, at the end of which was a large chamber full of Skakdi. Spying on them, the Toa watched as they fused a Vortixx, a Zyglak, a Stelt laborer, and the five Piraka (who had disappeared from Daxia) in a tank of Energized Protodermis.[3] The Golden Being emerged and demanded a meal. While the Skakdi eagerly mobbed around it, the Mahri prepared to act. However, the being made the Skakdi's dreams real, and the Toa Mahri were soon entranced by its power. Hahli and the other Mahri dropped their weapons and headed towards the Skakdi to offer their servitude.[42]

Spherus Magna

After Teridax was defeated, Hahli and the other Toa Mahri left the Matoran Universe with the Skakdi and the Skakdi Fusion and arrived on Spherus Magna. The Skakdi traveled to the coast of Aqua Magna, where the Golden Being created a vast fortress. Hahli and the Skakdi took up residence in this fortress.[43]

Shortly afterwards, Annona attacked the fortress and consumed the dream energy of every Skakdi in the fortress, driving them mad. The Golden Being's power automatically granted the maddened Skakdi's dreams, causing the fortress to dissolve and aberrations to appear in the region. During the confusion, the Golden Being's hold on the Toa Mahri was broken, and Hahli was released from her trance.[44]

Abilities and Traits

As a Matoran on Mata Nui, Hahli spent most of her time tending to her many village chores like fish-catching and net-mending, without ambition to travel or go on adventures. Her shyness kept her from speaking up, despite being full of ideas, and her fellow Ga-Matoran would often forget or overlook her.[45] Nevertheless, Nokama saw true potential in her, selecting her to play for Ga-Koro in the kolhii tournament.[46]

On Metru Nui, Hahli was proficient in translating written language and symbols. This skill was forgotten following her memories being erased by the Matoran Sphere, but was retaught to her by Nokama upon their return to Metru Nui.[5]

When she became a Toa, Hahli was initially nervous about her new role, and the power she possessed.[27] She eventually warmed up to it and became more confident, to the point of choosing to go on solo missions without fear. She also developed an aggressive edge, leading Jaller to teasingly call her "Hahli the Barbarian".[32]

While a Toa Inika, Hahli's Water powers were entwined with Lightning. The lightning constantly crackled inside her, making her immune to the effects of Antidermis, and she could not create water without it having electricity laced in, though this was not the case when she manipulated existing water.[47][48] She also had a resistance to electricity.[49]

After becoming a Toa Mahri, she lost her lightning powers and was only capable of breathing water.[32] She also lost her ability to wear regular Kanohi, as her new modified Kanohi was necessary for breathing water.[50][51] When Matoro teleported his team back to Metru Nui, he gave them the ability to breathe both water and air, making them amphibious[33] and allowing them to wear regular Kanohi.[52]

Mask and Tools

A kolhii player, Hahli used a kolhii stick as a Matoran, acquiring it after being selected for the team. During her travels, she wore a green satchel, in which she carried various tools and artifacts.[53] She was also presented with the Chronicler's Staff after she was named Chronicler.

As a Toa Inika, Hahli wore the Kanohi Elda, the Mask of Detection, which allowed her to find the Mask of Life and spot hidden beings, such as Matoro while he used his Iden.

Hahli's tools in her Inika form were a Laser Harpoon, which could fire energy harpoons, as well as a Zamor Launcher loaded with Energized Protodermis. Her Zamor Launcher was lost when she transformed into a Toa Mahri.

Hahli's mask is now a Kanohi Faxon, the Mask of Kindred. While underwater, she is unable to wear regular Kanohi, but can switch masks with the other Toa Mahri if need be.[54][51]

As a Toa Mahri, Hahli wields Protosteel Talons and a Cordak Blaster and possesses wing-like fins on her back. Hahli did not bring her Cordak Blaster on her mission to Zakaz as it its size and loudness make it impractical for a spy mission.[55]
