"We ... we stand in as close to the mind of Mata Nui as it is possible to be. If we destroy this place, we destroy that mind, and doom the universe."

The Core Processor was a vast and complex system of machinery located under the Coliseum of Metru Nui.[1]

History

The core processor was built along with the rest of the Matoran Universe over 100,000 years ago. It was designed to be the location where Mata Nui's spirit was to reside, from which he could maintain the universe.[2] The Great Beings also placed in stasis two Glatorian in the Processor to pilot the robot in case there was damage to the system. They awoke from stasis only to die in the Great Cataclysm caused by Makuta Teridax.[3]

Mata Nui ruled the universe from here for 100,000 years, until the actions of Makuta Teridax caused Mata Nui to crash land on Aqua Magna and fall into a coma.[4]

1,000 years later, Mata Nui died but was quickly revived by Toa Matoro's use of the Ignika. However, his spirit was separated from the core processor and before Mata Nui could return to it, Teridax slipped through the cracks under the Coliseum[5] and blocked Mata Nui from reentering.[6]

During the war between the Order of Mata Nui and the Brotherhood of Makuta, the Toa Hagah were sent on a mission by Helryx to find Teridax who had recently disappeared from Mahri Nui. After being given the only person who knew the whereabouts of the Makuta, Zaktan, the six Toa Hagah made their way to Metru Nui and the Coliseum.[7] After a misunderstanding with the Toa Mahri, who were guarding the city, the two teams conceived a plan that would make it possible to go under the Coliseum without destroying it.[5] Traveling through the underground complex, they discovered a carving with the words "Bara Magna" written on it. The Toa Hagah fell into a trap which magnetized them to a wall as Molten Protodermis filled the chamber.[8] But moments before they were killed, they were saved by the appearance of Makuta Miserix. He joined them and they all journeyed into the main chamber with the intent of killing Teridax. Immediately, they came across the two deceased Glatorian in front of some machinery. Upon a closer inspection, they discovered that they were from a different world.[9]

Soon afterward, Helryx and Keetongu arrived through a dimensional portal, joined a few seconds later by Axonn and Brutaka. Teridax then revealed himself and shot a beam with the intent of killing Zaktan.[10] He then began to discuss his plan with the group and the purpose of the room. Demonstrating his new powers, he cast an illusion over Miserix, put the Toa Hagah in a trance, seemin and banished Axonn, Brutaka, and Keetongu to the Southern Islands. Finally, only Helryx remained in the chamber as a prisoner with Teridax.[2] Shortly afterward, Mata Nui was reawakened by the Toa Nuva in Karda Nui and Teridax was able to gain control over Mata Nui's body.[6]

Helryx eventually decided to destroy the chamber by using a Nova Blast of Water, thus sparing other worlds outside the universe from Teridax. Before she could do so however, Tren Krom in Lewa's body, Kapura, Hafu, and Tuyet arrived. Tren Krom freed Miserix and began using the equipment to send a message to Mata Nui. The others saw this and moved to stop him, but before they could, Axonn and Brutaka reappeared, having teleported there from the Southern Islands. The six beings, excluding the Matoran, then argued over whether or not to destroy Teridax. As Helryx, Miserix, and Axonn argued for ending Teridax's reign, Tuyet, Tren Krom, and Brutaka disagreed and believed the Universe should be spared.[11]

A battle commenced, but was interrupted when Artakha teleported into the room.[12] Artakha then forced Tren Krom to leave the body of Toa Lewa, allowing Lewa's mind to return to his body. Helryx walked up to Artakha and told him to leave, but he refused to allow them to destroy the entire universe. Teridax then spoke, telling them to leave, and teleported them out of the Core Processor into space.[13]

The Core Processor, along with Teridax, was destroyed when a fragment of Aqua Magna collided with it.[14][15][16]

Functions

The Core Processor was heavily defended against physical intruders, with features such as magnetic walls and molten Protodermis.[8] However, there were no defenses against intruders without a physical form.[5] The Core Processor was primarily meant to house Mata Nui's spirit before it was replaced by that of Makuta Teridax.[2] It also included communications gear, which Tren Krom used to contact the Ignika.[17]

Two Glatorian, one of the Jungle Tribe and one of the Fire Tribe,[9][18] were placed in stasis in the Core Processor when it was completed to act as pilots in case Mata Nui's systems were damaged.[19][20][21][22]
