Type Book
Years released 2001-2010; 2014-2015

The BIONICLE franchise relates much of its storyline content through the use of Comics, packaged with the LEGO Club Magazine. Different types of comics, such as promotional ones, have been released in other ways as well. The vast majority of BIONICLE comics were printed and distributed by the DC Comics company, a division of Warner Bros. Entertainment.

BIONICLE: 2001 - 2005

Starting in July 2001, BIONICLE comics were being included in the LEGO Magazine as a promotion for the sets. The first fifteen comics focus on the Toa Mata/Toa Nuva's adventures on the island of Mata Nui.

BIONICLE Metru Nui: 2004 - 2005

January 2004 marked the launch of the Metru Nui sub-series of comics which focused on the Toa Metru's adventures in Metru Nui.

BIONICLE Ignition: 2006 - 2008

If a Universe Ends, the first Ignition storyline comic

The BIONICLE Ignition series launched January 2006 with Comic 0 (which was not an actual comic but a preview of the new series). Stuart Sayger illustrated the first eleven Ignition comics, and Leigh Gallagher assumed the role as illustrator in 2008. The comics featured the Toa Inika's journey on Voya Nui, the Toa Mahri's adventure on Mahri Nui and The Final Battle in Karda Nui.

BIONICLE Sea of Darkness: 2007

Sea of Darkness is a sub-series of BIONICLE Ignition that takes place in Mahri Nui. The series tells the story for 2007 and is illustrated by Stuart Sayger.

BIONICLE Battle for Power: 2008

Battle for Power series is a sub-series of BIONICLE Ignition that takes place in Karda Nui. The series tells the story for 2008 and is illustrated by Leigh Gallagher.

BIONICLE Glatorian: 2009 - 2010

BIONICLE: Glatorian is the third comic series based on the BIONICLE legend. Greg Farshtey returns as writer, with series newcomer Pop Mhan as illustrator.

BIONICLE Journey's End: 2010

Journey's End series is a sub-series of BIONICLE Glatorian released in two installments. The series concludes the original story and is illustrated by Pop Mhan.

Graphic Novels

Graphic Novels are compendiums of individually released comics that tell a cohesive story. The majority of the Graphic Novels released were published by Papercutz, which collected a given year's worth of comics, and occasionally included new bonus content.

Promotional Comics

Challenge of the Rahi

Smaller promotional comics have been created to fill out the BIONICLE line. The first of these comics was Challenge of the Rahi, a free mini-comic included in the Happy Meals that also included the six 2001 Matoran sets. Later comics have been packaged in sets themselves, as well as inclusions in the LEGO Magazine.

McDonalds Comics

Lunchables Comics

Lunchables also had a set of promotional comics. They were slightly shorter than the McDonald Promo Comics and were a kind of in-between-scenes for the comic In the Grip of the Morbuzakh, and were actual parts from Trial By Fire.

2015 Promotional Comics

Each character bio of the 2015 Toa on the relaunched BIONICLE.com website featured a promotional comic of the Toa collecting their respective Golden Masks of Power, and then combining with their Protector for a powered-up mode. These comics are also included in the instruction booklets for each character. The Lord of Skull Spiders instruction booklet also includes a comic in the same style, though it is not available on the website.
