[carve] History
Voya Nui was chosen by the Great Beings as the location to hide the Kanohi Ignika.
While a part of the Southern Continent, Voya Nui was part of the region overseen by Makuta Mutran. During the Great Cataclysm, it broke off and somehow shot up and broke through the underground dome which contained the continent. In doing so, it created a hole in the continent's dome and the dome of Karda Nui, of which it rested on top of. Water then began to flow through those two holes, flooding Karda Nui.
Voya Nui eventually drifted off to a northern position, and finally stopped when Mahri Nui sank beneath the sea and The Cord connecting the two made the underwater city act as an anchor. When the Toa Mahri destroyed the Cord, Voya Nui was returned to its former position in the Southern Continent.
[carve] Landscape
Voya Nui was a crescent-shaped island when it floated in the Endless Ocean. After the Great Cataclysm, the volcano in the island's center, Mount Valmai, erupted, creating a new part of the island that is where the Voya Nui Bay is now. This section of the island, along with the village on it, sank into the sea, making Voya Nui its original shape once again. The Chamber of the Kanohi Ignika is hidden under Mount Valmai.
Resources such as water and food were often scarce on the island, forcing the Matoran to scavenge for resources. By the time of the Ignika story arc, multiple droughts and famines had left the Matoran in a precarious position.
The island was (and still is) extremely dangerous, as it is often plummeted with unexpected earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other dangers such as Rahi. Because of this, the Matoran of Voya Nui all united together in a single village for unity and security.
