Lhikan giving Vakama a Toa Stone.

Vakama was once an apprentice forger of Kanohi masks trained by Nuhrii. However, he soon surpassed him in skill and had his own forge, along with building several Fire Drones to assist him. As a result, Nuhrii became very jealous of Vakama's accomplishments after this. Vakama was also a good friend of Jaller.

Vakama was surprised when Turaga Dume had suddenly asked him to forge the Vahi Great Mask of Time. He was still in the process of finding the correct disks for the mask when Lhikan, the sole Toa of Metru Nui, entered his forge and gave him a Toa Stone. Vakama then witnessed a battle between Lhikan and the Dark Hunters Nidhiki and Krekka. During the battle, Nidhiki captured Vakama and held him upside down above a pit of molten Protodermis, forcing Lhikan to surrender in order to protect Vakama. Nidhiki, however, threw Vakama into the pit regardless, and Vakama was saved at the last moment by Lhikan's Fire Greatswords, which were combined into a Lavaboard and kicked beneath Vakama. After Lhikan's capture, Vakama blamed himself for the incident.

After the incident, Vakama inspected the Toa Stone given to him. As he inspected the stone, Turaga Dume paid a surprise visit to his forge, and Vakama quickly hid the Toa Stone. After a brief conversation, Dume departed, and Vakama took the Toa Stone to the Great Temple, where he met five other Matoran, one from each Metru. They were:

[carve] Transformation

After a moment of teasing and somewhat unpleasant conversations, the six Matoran placed the Toa stones into the Toa Suva, which unleashed six beams of Toa energy. Each beam struck an individual and transformed them into Toa.

The Toa then chose their Toa Tools from a tool storage in the Suva. Vakama, unable to give up his life as a forger, picked a Disk Launcher and was consequently ridiculed by other Toa such as Matau for picking an oversized "Matoran tool."

[carve] Great Disks

While the other new Toa admired their new forms, Vakama received a vision of Metru Nui being destroyed by the Morbuzakh, a vicious plant which had been appearing recently in the city and causing destruction, and then saw the city suddenly restored. Six Great Disks flew at him and destroyed the Morbuzakh. He learned the names of the six Matoran who knew where the disks were located: Vhisola, Tehutti, Ahkmou, Orkahm, Ehrye, and his old mentor Nuhrii.

When he relayed his vision to the others, some of the Toa Metru doubted the vision and did not trust Vakama entirely, believing him to have spent too much time in his forge and had lost his mind. However, Nokama stepped up and helped Vakama to convince the others that his vision may be true and that by obtaining the disks they could stop the Morbuzakh and prove that they were worthy Toa. The six Toa Metru then, some reluctantly, split up in search of the Matoran.

Vakama traveled to Ta-Metru, where he encountered Morbuzakh vines attempting to knock a vat of molten Protodermis to the ground, which would result in heavy damage to that area of Ta-Metru. Vakama managed to stop the vines with a pair of freeze Kanoka, and in doing so learned that the Morbuzakh hated the cold.

He then found out from the control room attendant, a Ta-Matoran named Kapura, that a four-legged creature had sabotaged the controls, allowing the Morbuzakh to grab the Protodermis vats. When he asked about Nuhrii, Kapura told him that the Matoran had been looking in the morning for a Kanohi he had crafted which he had tossed out as flawed, but had been told was not. Vakama was told that he had headed to the Protodermis Reclamation Yard to find it, and Vakama followed. Once there, he found the mask Nuhrii had been looking for, but saw that it was indeed damaged.

Kalama, a worker at the yard, showed him a tablet Nuhrii had dropped after seeing the broken mask, which offered him the secret to making a Kanohi from a Great Disk if he came to an abandoned Mask Maker's house. Suddenly struck by another vision of Nuhrii in danger, Vakama rushed in the direction of the abandoned area, which was one of the first places where the Morbuzakh struck. There, he found Nuhrii buried underneath a pile of rubble. He dug him out, and then brought him to the Great Temple to meet up with the other Toa Metru. At the Great Temple, Vakama met with the other Toa Metru, and was convinced that one of the Matoran had betrayed the other five and helped them be lured into traps. The Toa deduced correctly that the traitor was the Po-Matoran Ahkmou.

The Toa split up again, this time in three groups of two Toa, two Matoran, to find the Great Disks. Vakama and Nuhrii wound up traveling with Onewa and Ahkmou after the Toa flipped Kanoka disks to decide the groups. The group of four traveled to Ta-Metru's Fire Pits, and was met with attempted escape from the two Matoran. Vakama used a teleportation disk to teleport Nuhrii back to his side, whilst Onewa used his Proto Pitons to drag Ahkmou back. The group of four then managed to recover the Ta-Metru Great Disk from one of the Metru's fire pits, encountering Morbuzakh vines within it.

They were nearly killed by Nidhiki when they attempted a shortcut through the Protodermis Reclamation Center, and Vakama barely managed to save the four of them. They then went to retrieve the Po-Metru Great Disk from the Sculpture Fields, where they encountered a mad Tunneler. Vakama made the mistake of channeling fire at the Tunneler, causing the creature to absorb the elemental energy and adapt to it, turning it into a creature of Fire. It was only after Onewa channeled sand to the creature that the creature turned into glass and ceased to fight. They found the Po-Metru Great Disk wedged into a precariously balanced sculpture and returned once more to the Great Temple.

Now that they had all six Great Disks, the Toa Metru went to Ta-Metru to destroy the Morbuzakh's King Root, which they suspected to be in the Great Furnace. The six Toa were forced to hide in an abandoned forge, after nearly being discovered by a squad of Nuurakh, and were struck by thousands of Morbuzakh seeds from which vines burst out from to strangle the Toa and Matoran. They escaped, and entered the Great Furnace where they were met with an attack from the Morbuzakh. Trapped as a result, the six Matoran combined into the Matoran Nui and freed the Toa. They approached the center of the furnace, and a furious battle ensued in the heart of the furnace.

The Toa Metru began to lose, attempting to defend against vines attacking from all sides while trying to withstand the high heat of the furnace. The battle ended when the Toa Metru feigned defeat and then taunted the Morbuzakh, allowing it to grab them and bring them close enough to unleash the powers of the Great Disks on the plant. The Morbuzakh was destroyed by the energies brought upon it, and the Toa Metru were relieved to have won their first major battle.

[carve] Krahka

Afterwards, on their way to the Coliseum to see Turaga Dume, the Toa met up with archivist Nuparu, who informed them of a problem in the Archives. The Toa Metru went into the Archives to see the problem, and were attacked by a shape-shifting Rahi, Krahka, which attempted to turn the Toa against each other by copying their forms and powers and attacking the other Toa Metru with them. After defeating Krahka and accidentally awakening another Rahi, Tahtorak, in the battle, along with repairing the leak, the Toa made it to the Coliseum, where they presented Dume with the six Great Disks.

Dume, however, turned them down, claiming them to be false Toa. He then tested the Toa, but they failed his test for they were drained of their Elemental Powers after the battles with Krahka and the Morbuzakh, and an inability to access their Kanohi powers. Dume therefore announced them as impostors to the Matoran and ordered them to be arrested by the Vahki. Onewa, Whenua, and Nuju were captured by the Vahki while Nokama, Matau, and Vakama were left as fugitives with the sole mission of finding Toa Lhikan and clearing their names. They stowed away on a Vahki transport where they encountered the Dark Hunters Nidhiki and Krekka.

After a short battle with them, they left the transport. They later encountered the awakened Tahtorak, on a rampage demanding some sort of answer, whom they managed to defeat temporarily by causing it to fall through the ground and through several underground floors. Seeing Lhikan's Spirit Star traveling toward Po-Metru, they decided to travel in hopes of finding the Toa of Fire. They once again encountered the Dark Hunters, but this time the battle was cut short when a herd of Kikanalo stampeded through the village. Nokama was able to convince the chief of the herd to help them using her newly-activated Mask of Translation, and they traveled through the Canyon of Unending Whispers, where they discovered a prison guarded by a large group of Vahki. They reunited with Onewa, Nuju, and Whenua and met a Turaga that revealed himself to be none other than Lhikan. When Lhikan asked about the Heart of Metru Nui, Vakama misunderstood that to be Lhikan, but he sadly told Vakama that it was the Matoran.

[carve] Great Cataclysm

Eventually, the Toa and Lhikan learned the truth - the Dume who had requested the Vahi was an impostor, and was none other than the Makuta Teridax, the Makuta of Metru Nui, trying to enslave the peaceful Matoran of the city. The real Turaga Dume had been trapped in a damaged Matoran Pod, hidden in Onu-Metru. Taking a Vahki Transport, the Toa and Lhikan went to confront the false Turaga.

At the Coliseum, Teridax revealed himself to the Toa, enacting his master plan and thus causing the Great Cataclysm. Vakama and his team decided to rescue six Matoran and then journey past the Great Barrier to find a refuge for the rest of the Matoran. However, Teridax followed them after absorbing the power supply of Metru Nui, The Dark Hunters Nidhiki and Krekka, and his Rahi Nivawk. Along the journey to the Great Barrier, Vakama took all six Great Disks and began crafting the Kanohi Vahi.

When they reached the Great Barrier, however, Teridax was waiting for them, and Vakama was forced to fight him for control of the Vahi. He attempted to use the Vahi against Teridax, but his inability nearly cost him his life. Turaga Lhikan sacrificed his life to save Vakama. Vakama then discovered his mask power, and shot the Vahi from Teridax's hand with his disk launcher. After a skirmish with Teridax, he and the other five Toa imprisoned the Makuta in a Toa Seal. The Toa then left Metru Nui through the Great Barrier, seeking a new home for the Matoran. On the way, they discovered the Onu-Matoran and former Archivist Mavrah, who had hidden himself beyond the Great Barrier and had a home with a large group of ancient Rahi of the ocean, along with several Kralhi. Though Mavrah attempted to prevent them from passing, Vakama and the rest of the Toa Metru managed to escape, though Mavrah perished in the battle which took place when they did.

The Toa eventually found an island above Metru Nui, which they later named Mata Nui, after the Great Spirit. While on Mata Nui, Vakama received another vision, this one foreshadowing the eventual loss of his Toa power. Acting on this vision, he convinced the rest of the Toa to put some of their power into new Toa Stones to assure that if they failed their next quest, the Matoran would not be without protection.

Over the course of their return journey to Metru Nui, Vakama and the Toa Metru encountered a lair of the Makuta Teridax, which was filled with strange, mutated Rahi and remnants of former experiments, including the Rahi Nui and a prototype of the Morbuzakh called Karzahni. After battles against many of these creatures, they arrived back on Metru Nui.

Vakama as a Toa Hordika.

The return to Metru Nui was horrifying to Vakama and his team of Toa. The city had been hit by the Great Cataclysm, its once beautiful skyline ragged and torn. Worse, many Rahi had escaped the Archives and ran free around the city. As the Toa made their way to the Coliseum to save the Matoran, they were ambushed by spiders known as Visorak. The venom from the Visorak mutated the Toa into new forms - Toa Hordika. Rescued by the Rahaga, the half-Toa half-Rahi tended to lapse into fits of uncontrollable rage and violence. With the mission to build Airships and discovery of the fact that they were not meant to be Toa, Vakama's guilt at the transformation of his friends and his utter hopelessness on his quest to save the Matoran caused him to do something he would regret for millennia - he joined Roodaka and Sidorak, the leaders of the Visorak.

The other five Toa Hordika, along with the Rahaga and the Rahi Keetongu, launched an all-out assault on the Coliseum. Then, in the midst of the battle, Matau swung up to him, catching Vakama on surprise. They immediately battled each other. Matau lost, but was able to bring Vakama back to his senses. Understanding what he had done was wrong, he returned to his fellow Toa Hordika, who were united once more. Sidorak, meanwhile, was slain by Keetongu, leaving only Roodaka to be dealt with. Five Hordika fired their Elemental spinners at her. As Vakama was preparing to fire his own, Rahaga Norik shouted at him to stop, but it was too late. As Vakama's Fire Rhotuka hit Roodaka, the combination of the six elements impacted on her heartstone, which was carved from the same Protodermis that caged Teridax. With the elemental seal of his prison unlocked, Teridax broke free and Roodaka was carried away by him, teleported through the stone. Vakama as the leader of the Visorak, disbanded the horde. Keetongu cured the Hordika, transforming them back into Toa Metru. Using Airships, the Toa carried the sleeping Matoran away from Metru Nui and to their new home, the island of Mata Nui.

Before the millennia that the Matoran spent on Mata Nui, however, another adventure took place. Vakama, knowing that the Vahi was still in the sea around Metru Nui, told the other Toa Metru that he was going to retrieve it, and to go on ahead without him. He leapt out of the airship, into the Silver Sea.

When he reached the Vahi, he found it was leaking energy and repaired it by focusing his power to seal the crack. Then he was hit by a water spout and knocked out. The last thing he saw before passing out was a tall and mysterious figure taking the Vahi.

When he awoke, the Vahi was gone, and he found himself catapulted back into the form of a Matoran. Quick investigation revealed that Nuju, Nokama, Onewa, and Whenua were still Matoran. Matau was dead, killed by the Morbuzakh, which was also still alive, and that Nuhrii, Vhisola, Orkham, Ahkmou, Tehutti, and Ehrye were all Toa. Turaga Lhikan had not been captured by the Dark Hunters, and ruled jointly with Turaga Dume.

After a close encounter with the Vahki, Vakama found Nokama and teamed up with her, heading towards a Po-Metru cave that Onewa had told him about. Inside was one of Teridax's many lairs. A Kratana inside attached itself to Vakama's mask, giving him a vision of Krakua. The Toa of Sonics told him about the need later for the Toa Inika, albeit in a vague metaphor. The vision suddenly ended as Lhikan pulled the Kratana off. Vakama grabbed a disk and threw it at Nokama, who was reveled to be a Boggarak, only appearing as Nokama through some kind of illusion. Lhikan was revealed to be Teridax, and Metru Nui was once more in ruins.

Teridax revealed to Vakama that he still desired the Vahi, and then Vakama told the Makuta that it was no longer in his possession, having been stolen by Voporak. Teridax grew angry at this, and then offered Vakama a truce while they sought to retrieve the Vahi from Voporak's clutches.

The two emerged from the lair and found Voporak guarding the cave, but no Vahi in sight. Deducing that The Shadowed One now had possession of the mask, Teridax distracted Voporak by summoning an army of Rahkshi, who were all killed by Voporak's time-acceleration shield. Vakama was horrified and disgusted at Teridax's willingness to sacrifice the Rahkshi so readily.

Their search led them to the Great Temple, where Vakama and Sentrakh, who had journeyed to Metru Nui alongside The Shadowed One, engaged in combat, with Vakama emerging as the victor. Then, he was taken by Teridax to use as a bargaining chip with The Shadowed One, until Vakama revealed to the leader of the Dark Hunters that the Makuta had been the one to kill Nidhiki and Krekka, not the Toa. Enraged, The Shadowed One attacked Teridax, with Vakama escaping with the Vahi, utilizing his disk launcher's jetpack function. The Shadowed One destroyed the launcher with his eyebeams, sending Vakama spiraling out of control.

The Toa Metru of Fire was saved by the reborn Karzahni plant, which had re-grown from parts of its former self used to keep the Lhikan II afloat. It revealed to Vakama the existence of the Order of Mata Nui, and also that Vakama and the other Toa Metru were the intended Toa Metru. Before any more could be revealed, the Karzahni was attacked and killed by Teridax, who had beaten Voporak and The Shadowed One, and was once more in pursuit of Vakama and the Vahi.

Vakama led Teridax into the Protodermis Reclamation Center, where he threatened to destroy the Vahi and unravel the fabric of time itself, rather than have it be in the hands of a Makuta. He and Teridax then made a deal where it was agreed that Teridax would leave the Matoran in peace for one year on the island of Mata Nui, and Vakama would not destroy the Vahi. Teridax then teleported Vakama to one of the tunnels leading to the island of Mata Nui, and Vakama made his way to the surface, reuniting with the other Toa Metru.

After his return to the island of Mata Nui, Vakama and the other five Toa sacrificed their Toa Power to revive the Matoran from their slumber. Now a Turaga, Vakama was faced with the task of leading and protecting his Matoran from the wild Rahi and Teridax, who made life hard for the Matoran on their island paradise. In the absence of Toa, Vakama used his diminished elemental powers to aid in the defense of his village. He also chose Jaller as his right hand Matoran, and Kapura as his left.

Not long before the arrival of the Toa Mata, Vakama was captured by Fire Mahi. He also lost his Firestaff, which somehow ended up in the tunnels of Onu-Wahi. Shortly after he and his tool were recovered by Takua, the Toa Mata were summoned from the Kini-Nui.

When Toa Tahu first arrived in Ta-Wahi, and was trapped by Jaller, Vakama intervened, stopping Tahu from taking his revenge on the captain of the guard. After aiding Tahu in his search for Kanohi, Vakama asked Takua to gather the Chronicler's Company, to protect the Toa Mata from being trapped underneath the Kini-Nui while they confronted Teridax. Afterwards, Vakama spoke with Takua once more, who had witnessed the awakening of the first Bohrok, calming the Matoran, and welcoming him back to his home in Ta-Koro.

After the Pahrak and Kohrak attacked Ta-Koro, Vakama told the Toa Mata of the Bohrok, causing the Toa to wonder how many secrets the Turaga were hiding. After the transformation of the Toa Nuva, Vakama witnessed the attack of the Bohrok-Kal, in which the Toa Nuva lost their elemental powers. During this time, Vakama was trapped with Pohatu, Onua, and Lewa in the Place of Shadow. Facing the Rahi Nui for the second time, he confronted the beast by turning invisible and taunting it. As the beast remembered and hated Vakama's voice, it charged him, jamming its horns into the wall, and allowing the Toa and Turaga to escape.

Vakama later witnessed the discovery of the Mask of Light, and encouraged Takanuva following Jaller's death. After Takanuva defeated Teridax, and Jaller was revived, Vakama was present when Metru Nui was rediscovered. He then decided to share his tales of his time as a Toa with the Toa Nuva and the Matoran.

After approximately three months of story-telling and Boat construction, Vakama, the Turaga, the Toa Nuva, and all the Matoran at last set foot on Metru Nui.

[carve] Return to Metru Nui

As soon as the Matoran returned, the Turaga and the Toa Nuva were summoned to a meeting by Dume, where he explained a dark secret: Mata Nui was dying. He immediately told the Toa to go to an island called Voya Nui, where the only hope lay, the Mask of Life. After witnessing the Toa departing in Toa Canisters, another problem occurred. Jaller had figured out something was wrong, and he was determined to find out. Dume and Vakama refused to tell him, leading to the halt of all reconstruction work. Surprised, Vakama and Dume tried to restart the work, but failed. At the same time, the Toa had already been gone for too long, and Vakama feared that an accident had occurred, or worse.

When the Toa Mahri were teleported back to Metru Nui, Vakama was there to greet them and tell them of Matoro's fate, which he had seen through his visions.

[carve] Abilities and Traits

When Vakama became a Toa Metru, he was not always certain he was ready for the role of hero. At times he missed his old life in the foundries, crafting masks for others to wear. Vakama has always been plagued by strange visions of the future. Often their meaning is not clear, and it is a "talent" he has always hidden from others. It was only later that he discovered that those visions were the key to saving the city. He had the wisdom and the courage to be a leader, but was not sure he wanted that role at first. During the Great Rescue Vakama went from under confident to too confident for his own good. When he went back to being a Toa Metru, Vakama finally balanced his ego.

As a Toa of Fire, Vakama could create, control, and absorb heat and flame. After becoming a Turaga, these abilities were greatly reduced.

[carve] Mask and Tools

Toa Vakama used a large Kanoka Disk Launcher. He used it to fire his Elemental Toa Disk. This was unusual for two reasons: he was the only Toa who actually had their Toa Disk, and he was the only Toa who used a Matoran weapon (Matau often harassed him about that). It could also be used as a jetpack. He bore the Kanohi Huna, the Great Mask of Concealment, which let him become invisible even though he still cast a shadow.

As a Toa Hordika, Vakama's Disk Launcher was replaced with two Blazer Claws. He also got a Rhotuka Launcher on his back which could shoot Fire Rhotuka, though he lost his mask power. When he was returned to a Toa Metru, he regained his Disk Launcher and Kanohi Huna.

As a Turaga he wields a small Firestaff as his Badge of Office. He also wears a Noble Huna which allows him to conceal himself, yet he still casts a shadow. He also received other Noble Kanohi when they were found by the Toa Mata, but rarely used them. These additional masks were lost when Ta-Koro sank.

Vakama was first released in 2001 as one of the six small Turaga sets. He also had two promotional releases: one in 2001 with Kabaya sweets in Japan and another in 2003 with Woolworth's in the United Kingdom. Moving the lever on his back caused him to raise or lower his Firestaff, which would lower itself automatically thanks to a rubber band.

Toa Vakama was later released in 2004 as a 48-piece canister set. He was the only Toa Metru set to contain a disk launcher, which was in a form exclusive to that set and featuring a flame motif. This disk launcher served as his Toa tool and could be attached to his back either for storage or to act as a jetpack. Being the only Toa to actively use his Toa Disk in the story, his set was also the only Toa Metru set to include it, depicted as a transparent red Kanoka featuring his name in Matoran lettering and an image of his mask. One could swing Vakama's arms alternately by spinning an axle on his back. Combining parts from this set with pieces from Toa Metru Onewa and Matau could create Kralhi, the defunct Vahki predecessor, and combining its parts with those of all five other Toa Metru sets allowed one to build the Rahi Krahka in the form she took when she turned into a fusion of all six Toa Metru.

Vakama was released most recently in 2005 as a Toa Hordika, also as a 48-piece canister set. Like the other five Toa Hordika sets, the set included a Rhotuka launcher and two silver Rhotuka spinners. Parts from this set could be combined with parts from Toa Hordika Whenua and Matau to create a Protocairn, or with Whenua alone to make a Cable Crawler.
